#1 The Egyptian-held islands of Sanafir and Tiran overlook the Tiran Strait and entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. The closure of the Strait was the cause celebre that threatened the waterway to Israel's Eilat and resulted in the Arab-Israel Six Day War of 1967.

The Egyptian Government, apparently seeking better relations with Riyadh, planned to relinquish to Saudi Arabia the unpopulated and demilitarized islands. However, the move was unpopular in both in Cairo itself and Jerusalem. Sisi is seen as more dependable than the Saudi princes, and it is likely the islands will remain in Egyptian hands.
