Over the decades hundreds of millions of USAID dollars have been spent on Helmand, and there is little or nothing to show for it. Thus, Helmand reminds us that there are failed regions in failed states not worth saving.

Ref #1. Used to be some tough Marines at a fire base overlooking the Kajaki dam and power station. Nothing good ever happens in Helmand. A very sad place indeed.

#3 I must say, if the Pashtuns were to make an iron-clad agreement that they'd never, ever allow foreigners into their lands so as to set up a base that could be used against us and ours, I'd be perfectly happy to leave them alone and bring home our troops and our dollars.

Problem is: I know they'd lie.
