18:14 Shooter 'spotted hitchhiking' from the scene

Police are investigating reports the ISIS gunman was seen hitchhiking away from Istanbul after the attack.

This afternoon the towns of Yalova and Bursa were targeted by police after members of the public claimed to have spotted the nightclub killer. The gunman was reportedly first spotted in the port town of Yalova after crossing about 40 miles across the Sea of Marmara on a passenger ferry. He then was reportedly seen hitchhiking to Bursa.

Mehmet Yilan, 36, a barman at Reina for 12 years, said the attacker deliberately targeted the most crowded areas of the club.

“He stormed in and immediately headed for the people to the left, which is always more crowded ... I wonder if he came here before because he seemed to know where to go,” Yilan said, describing how his manager yelled at people to run. “He was shooting randomly but aiming for their upper bodies. He didn’t want to just injure them.”

11:10 Gunman 'likely to be linked to June airport attack'

A reporter has cited sources that claim the gunman is likely to be linked to the attack on Istanbul Ataturk Airport in June.

ITV News Correspondent Sally Lockwood also tweeted ‘UPDATE. I’ve been told by credible source gunman is not Turkish, has been identified by police &likely he’s linked to airport attack in June’

During the airport attack, gunmen armed with automatic weapons and explosive belts staged a simultaneous attack at the international terminal of Terminal 2. Forty-five people were killed, in addition to the three attackers, and more than 230 people were injured.

Chilling new details about the nature of the gunman have emerged in the Haberturk newspaper.

Police believe he was “well-trained professional with experience of war”, it is claimed.

This assessment comes from a number of reasons:

- The killer used a Kalashnikov, a heavy-duty weapon, and fired it from the waist, aiming it towards the upper body of his victims for maximum casualties

- He fire at least 180 rounds, leaving six empty cartons of ammunition at the scene

- The attacker spoke in “broken” Turkish and was wearing a green shirt, dark pants and black boots.

- He was said to be aged around 25-years-old and may be from East Turkestan
