#5 Actually the Roman satirist Juvenal got it right a long time ago: "Nosse wolunt omnes, mercedem solvere nemo." (Loose translation: Everyone wants to know things, to seem knowledgeable, but no one is willing to pay the price (of long, disciplined study.)

So much easier just to parrot the party line and have everyone tell you how intelligent you are rather than, you know, actually study and work hard.
