#2 Frank, having known some 'Spanish Side' Basque nationalists who were friends of my Mom, I would agree that it's ankle biting.

These folks we knew didn't see themselves as being related in any way with the rest of the Iberian peninsula.

#4 Which is why the Spanish govt via a minister publicly threatened them not to upset the apple cart and think of independence.
Also the application of art 155 of the Spanish constitution is a test run to do the same to the Basques should they get uppity again.
The French Basques would get slapped down real hard.
