North Korea's rhetoric and threats aren't new. What's new is the US administration's response.

Trump's new message simply is that the US will nuke North Korea if North Korea attacks the US with nukes.

The fact that the administration believes that this needs to be stated explicitly shows that there has been a dangerous erosion of US & Western deterrence during the past years.
