They tend to group into enormous swarms during mating season (which could be now, but I don't follow the SquidBook® social pages enough to verify). The more nets you have in the water, the more you catch.

The ChiCom ships might have been coordinating their net placements to capitalize on that.

#3 The Argies weren't really trying. Given modern fire control systems, making a big hole in its hull should have been a gimme. The question is whether they were paid off or had very restrictive ROE's.
