#1 Karate, from Okinawa (Shotokan), means 'empty hand'. Martial arts date back to mainland China for about 2 millennia. These people are fucking morons for peddling this codswallop. The only Greek karate I might remotely be familiar would involve buggering your fellow man, if ya know what I mean.

#4 I fondly remember years of 'empty hand' training in the 70s. Working katas, sparring to exhaustion and a soaking wet gi. Good for them.

#5 Any martial art, line dancing, aerobics... any kind of physical exercise that uses a combination of memorized movements done for at least twenty minutes at a time to get an aerobic effect will provode the healthful benefits that the New York Times journalist ascribes to a martial arts style so exotic that most of the fifty states don’t have a single instructor. But the NYT works ever to promote status anxiety by fawning over something most cannot have in the exact form described.
