#1 its a shame the PKK hasnt realized that they can get a lot better press if they would simply renounce Communism and say they were fighting for an "open and free society" and "self determination" against "Turkish ethnic cleansing and racism".

Little bit of PR goes a long way.

The whole Turkish-US alliance was based on the Kemalists, the Cold War and the Soviet Union. All are gone now, so the PKK has no need for Communism to curry support from the Soviets, and the US has no need for Turkey to be propped up against Turkish delusions of empire.

The problem for Turkey is that the Gulenists, like certain Christian sects, believe in driving for success in their chosen fields. The military is only one of the areas saturated with overperforming Gulenists.
