#1 I agree. Russia will always be fighting. Putin will defend the motherland. Under new leadership a more aggressive approach is likely to occur. Putin has demonstrated leadership. Those who follow having access to so much could easily go on conquest. That is something Putin I believe would never do. Putin plays a game of chess for the long term.

#3 I don't see what the Russians can do. The demographic time bomb will make it impossible for them to defend such a vast territory. Perhaps they make everyone believe they'll go nuclear in a heart beat? If so threatening but not doing anything about it is counter-productive.
