#1 Timeline:

1. US gives counter-espionage and military equipment to Lebanon to shore up "democratic" forces threatened by Iran and Syria client Hezbollah.

2. Instead of using the counter-espionage equipment to counter Hezbollah-Syria-Iran, Lebanon uses it to catch nationals spying for Israel.

3. Then Lebanon uses its arms to ambush Israeli soldiers. This was not an impromptu decision, but was a plan that even involved bringing along correspondents from Reuters and other sympathetic media.

4. The US administration is nonplussed, but Congress moves to cut off further military aid to Lebanon.

5. Lebabon ambushes a well-known terrorist: "See, US Congress, we are really using your aid for the purposes you intended."

Looks like a version of Pakistan's game plan.
