It most definitely was, Frank G, if quiet.

Fred, in Hoover there are apparently two articles without headlines. When you have a moment, would you delete them, please? Unfortunately, in Poster I can see the untitled things at the top of the list, but I have no way of finding them I when I open Hoover. Even less important, Hoover’s X-delete was not reconnected — but I can insert articles to Poster and delete them there. As long as I have a workaround, I’m content.

Fred, how are you getting articles into the Hoover queue? I can work on them there, but at the top I see only the Refresh button — no Add button visible. I’ve been working up the body of the articles in Hoover, then copy/pasting them into Rantburg.com’s Post Your Own Article to drop them into Poster.

Or three. Mr. Wife is spending the weekend helping his mother settle into her new house near his sister up north in NY State, my mother is having a small relapse after improving shockingly simce we brought her home in February, and my sister, bless her heart in a southren belle manner, chose these last few days to make me angrier than I’ve ever been in my entire life. It’s been two decades since the only other time she pulled something like this, so apparently we’re both coming to terms with it.

Clearly the emergent result of all that is effecting my ability to spell. Enjoy it while it lasts, gentlemen. ;-)

South Africa's ANC loses 30-year parliamentary majority after election
[Al Jazeera] The African National Congress (ANC) party has lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result that puts South Africa on a new political path for the first time since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago.

With more than 99 percent of votes counted on Saturday, the once-dominant ANC had received nearly 40 percent in Wednesday’s election, well short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela.

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele cements power as he begins second term
[Al Jazeera] El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is set to be sworn in for a second term, riding on a wave of popularity that has helped him consolidate his power and influence in the country.

The 42-year-old, who unapologetically describes himself as a "cool dictator", was re-elected in February with 85 percent of the vote. He is set to govern for another five years with near-total control of parliament and other state institutions.

The former publicist and mayor will take the oath of office at the National Palace in the capital, San Salvador, on Saturday.

The ceremony is due to be attended by dignitaries including Spanish King Felipe VI and Argentinian President Javier Milei, with whom Bukele shares an admiration for former United States President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and whatever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, whose son and namesake is also attending the event.

On Friday, inauguration preparations were disrupted by reports that police thwarted a plot to detonate explosives at locations across the country.

Bukele enjoys sky-high approval ratings due to his brutal crackdown on criminal gangs, credited with returning a sense of normality to a violence-fatigued society.

The campaign has drawn criticism from rights groups but has made Bukele the most popular leader in Latin America, according to a regional poll.

Bukele’s New Ideas party scored a near-clean sweep in legislative elections, where it took 54 of 60 seats.

Yet experts warn his extended honeymoon with voters may be nearing its end as economic worries overtake safety concerns in the public discourse, amid high government debt and fast-rising prices for consumer goods in a country where more than a quarter of the six million population lives in poverty.

Food inflation, meanwhile, has outpaced salary increases while public debt has skyrocketed on his watch to more than $30bn, or 84 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Mayoral candidate murdered in Mexico two days before election
[Al Jazeera] A candidate running for local office in Mexico’s central Puebla state has been killed at a political rally two days before the elections, adding to the toll of murdered contenders in what is seen as the country’s most violent mostly peaceful polls on record.

Jorge Huerta Cabrera was rubbed out on Friday in the city of Izucar de Matamoros where he was a candidate, according to the state prosecutor’s office.

The candidate’s wife and one of his colleagues were also maimed in the attack which was captured on video. The footage showed mayhem erupting at the rally after the shots rang out.

The killing takes the number of assassinated candidates in the 2024 election season to 37, one more than during the 2021 midterm election when 36 candidates were killed, according to data from security consultancy Integralia.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
the federal government reported 22 candidates killed as of Tuesday. Since then, three more deaths have been recorded, AFP news agency reported.

Integralia has also counted 828 non-lethal attacks on candidates during the current election season, up from 749 since just Monday.

Campaigning for Sunday’s elections, in which a new president, federal politicians, state governors and thousands of local officials are to be elected, has been marked by a wave of attacks against candidates that spiked in the last week.

On Wednesday, the campaign period closed for the vote, in which about 100 million Mexicans, of a population of 129 million, are eligible to cast ballots.

Violence linked to organised crime in Mexico has long killed politicians from various parties, especially those who hold or are seeking regional positions.

The anti-Muslim, pro-Israel far right now runs Holland. Is the European Parliament next?
[IsraelTimes] Upcoming elections for the EU’s legislature are expected to see gains by parties with ideologies feared by many Jews — even as they may be the community’s most ardent champions.

At a particularly bleak moment for European Jews, one of their most vocal supporters has effectively reached power in the Netherlands, the European Union’s fifth-largest economy and an influential founding member of the bloc.

A staunch advocate of Israel who worked as a volunteer in his youth in an Israeli agricultural community, Dutch politician Geert Wilders last week formed a new coalition that’s so pro-Israel and pro-Jewish that its founding contract promises to look into moving the Dutch embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and mandates Holocaust education for all new naturalized citizens.

The new coalition led by Wilders and his Party for Freedom marks an unprecedented departure from the Middle East policies of all its predecessors, not only in the Netherlands but in all of Western Europe.

There is, however, a significant caveat: Wilders is a far-right provocateur — a strident anti-Islam firebrand who supports laws that would ban the production of both halal and kosher meat. The possessor of a conviction for inciting ethnic discrimination against Moroccans, he has called Islam a “reprehensible, hateful, and violent” religion.

As Europe nears the potentially dramatic June European Parliament elections, the rise of Wilders and the divided Jewish response to it encapsulates the broader dilemma facing many European Jews and others: embrace the rising far right despite historical baggage and exclusionary views, or reject it in favor of a mainstream with milder politics but a questionable record of standing with Israel, the Jews — and even Europe itself.

The May 16 formation of a coalition led by the Party for Freedom, which won the highest share of the votes in the 2023 Dutch general election, is likely to help its performance in the June 6-9 European Parliament elections. In those elections, voters from all EU member states choose their national representatives to the bloc’s legislative branch.

The victory by Wilders, who has agreed to not serve as prime minister in order to facilitate a coalition agreement, is a rare achievement that could give the far right a new and prominent podium, and galvanize sister movements across the EU in next month’s vote.

Polls from before the formation of the Dutch coalition predicted that the Party for Freedom, which nationally has 37 seats of the 150 in the lower chamber of the Dutch parliament, would jump from currently not having any seats in the European Parliament to 10, becoming the largest Dutch party in the European Parliament (The Netherlands has 29 seats in the 720-seat European Parliament)

These projections are part of an EU-wide trend, where far-right parties are expected to increase their electoral strength collectively by at least 20% over the previous European Parliament elections of 2019, reaching 163 seats or 22% of the house.

More than just a gauge for the popularity of the major forces and ideologies in the European Union, the makeup of the European Parliament can affect budget votes and political appointments. The European Parliament has supervisory powers over the EU’s executive bodies and can confirm or veto the appointment of officials to top positions.

Biden says Israel has agreed to 'enduring' Gaza ceasefire proposal
[Al Jazeera] Israel has agreed to a proposal that would lead to a "lasting" ceasefire in the Gazoo

Strip, US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women created ... by the — you know — you know, the thing...
has announced, as he faces mounting pressure and criticism over his support for the Israeli war effort.

During a news conference at the White House on Friday afternoon, Biden said Israel has put forward "a comprehensive new proposal" to end the war.

"It’s a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire," the United States president told news hounds.

Biden said the proposal involves three phases, the first of which would last six weeks and include a full and complete ceasefire, as well as the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza.

The first phase would also see a number of captives held in the Gaza Strip — including women and the elderly — released in exchange for hundreds of Paleostinian prisoners in Israel, while humanitarian aid would flow into Gaza.

"There are American hostages who would be released at this stage and we want them home," said Biden, adding that Qatar

had transmitted the proposal to the Paleostinian group Hamas
..a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",...
, which governs Gaza.

In a statement shared on Telegram late on Friday, Hamas said it welcomed Biden’s remarks and his call for "a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of [Israeli] occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, reconstruction and prisoners exchange".

The group also said it was ready to respond "positively and constructively" to any proposal that includes those measures — as well as the return of displaced Paleostinians to their homes in Gaza — if Israel "explicitly commits" to it, as well.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that the Israeli prime minister authorised the country’s negotiating team to "present a proposal" to advance its goal of securing the release of captives held in Gaza.

The move also allows "Israel to continue the war until all its objectives are achieved, including the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities", the statement said.

Lebanon front is 'pressuring Israel', Hezbollah chief Nasrallah says
[Al Jazeera] Hezbollah chief His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...>
has stressed that the Lebanese group’s battle with Israel is consequential and will help shape the future of the region, as the two sides continue to exchange fire daily.

In a speech delivered via videolink on Friday, Nasrallah said the Israeli military is losing the war in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. , with Hezbollah’s attacks "pressuring Israel" from Leb
...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
.

"This battle concerns Paleostine, but also concerns the future of Lebanon and its water and oil resources," Nasrallah said. "This front is a support front that is part of the battle that will determine the fate of Paleostine, Lebanon and the region strategically."

The Israeli military occupied parts of south Lebanon for decades until its withdrawal in 2000, raising fears in the country that Israel’s ultimate aim is to control Lebanon’s water-rich southern areas.

Nasrallah added on Friday that Hezbollah is continuing its operations against Israel, regardless of "narrow political calculations".

The Iran-allied group began targeting Israeli troops along the border after the war on Gaza broke out. Throughout the recent conflict, Israel has been regularly bombing villages in southern Lebanon.

Earlier on Friday, Hezbollah claimed several attacks against Israeli positions after it said that Israeli bombing had killed a medic in south Lebanon.

The violence has forced thousands of Israelis to flee from the north of the country, with the fighting turning into a war of attrition, raising fears of a regional conflict.
