Following are excerpts from an interview with Lebanese author Farid Salman, which aired on OTV on November 25, 2008.
"In Lebanon, We've Become Accustomed to Refraining From Speaking the Truth"
Farid Salman: "In Lebanon, we've become accustomed to refraining from speaking the truth, in order to avoid provoking zealousness - whether sectarian, political, or anything. Only in Lebanon do you hear such a thing. Lebanon has been destroyed. We have been fighting and slaughtering one another for 30 years - but God forbid there should be any zealousness... Provoke zealousness?! Even rocks we've provoked against us.

"Our president goes to New York, and suggests that Lebanon become a center for dialogue between civilizations. For 30 years, the name of Lebanon has not appeared in any newspaper, in any symposium, university, or any place in the world, unless it is to say that the Lebanese are fighting among themselves in the name of sectarianism and all that - yet we are not ashamed to present ourselves as the venue of dialogue between civilizations. Are we capable of even conducting a dialogue among ourselves, before we embark on a dialogue of civilizations?" [...]
"The Sunni Muslim Sect... Was the Occupier... By the Sword"
"We have the two founding sects [of Lebanon] - the Druze and Maronite. Then we have the Shiites. Like the other two minorities, the Shiite sect was also a victim. The Sunni Muslim sect, on the other hand, was never a victim. This sect was the victor, the occupier..."
Interviewer: "Maybe we should call it 'conquest' instead of 'occupation'?"
Farid Salman: "Why not? It was an occupier. Why mince words? It was an occupier. By the sword. This is the truth. It was just like all the other occupying empires in the world.

"The Sunni Muslims in Lebanon are not in need of a homeland. The Middle East is Sunni in its entirety..."
Interviewer: "Maybe that was in the past, but now... That's not the issue..."
Farid Salman: "They are more than welcome here. I accept and recognize their Lebanese identity, but under one condition - that they accept the complexity of the Lebanese fabric, and be aware of its original and historical causes. They did not come to a new land, which had no history. They tried to impose their rule on this land, and eventually, they bought this rule, and today, they rule this land. That's what I am against." "Sunni Islam Has Collapsed... The Islam That... Cannot Possibly Collapse... is Shiite Islam"
"Sunni Islam has collapsed. Look around you - it has collapsed in all the countries. It has failed. The Islam that has survived, the Islam that looks towards the future, and cannot possibly collapse, because it is an ideology - is Shiite Islam.
"If the Shiite revolution had not taken place... Maybe some consider the revolution of Khomeini and Iran to be a tragedy, but one of these days, we will all have to acknowledge that if not for the new Shiite revolution in Islam... Before that, Islam was gone. Where is there Islam? In Saudi Arabia? In Pakistan? In Egypt? Where is there Islam?"
Interviewer: "You are talking in the sense of belonging to a faith..."
Farid Salman: "...and to a civilization, and to the world. When a Saudi mufti says that we should fight Mickey Mouse..."
Interviewer: "Not the Mufti, just one of their sheiks."
Farid Salman: "Okay, but the Mufti said something else. With the Wahhabis... He talked about the moon, and said that Man only imagined landing on the moon. Satan inflated himself, turning himself into a moon between Earth and the real moon. Thus, he deluded Man that he landed on the moon, but in fact, he landed on Satan.

"In the July [2006] war, wasn't it Saudi Arabia that assigned Israel the mission of driving the Shiites out of Greater Beirut? Who assigned the mission of this war? Who financed it? Saudi Arabia. Who collaborated with [Israel] on the ground? The allies of Saudi Arabia." [...]
"The Jews Brought Obama to Power In Order to Take Revenge... They Hate America"
"Obama will not complete the plan of George Bush Senior. Obama was brought to power by the Jews. Let me tell you something. In my view, and I might be mistaken, the Jews brought Obama to power in order to take revenge... Before they establish the Semitic Middle East, they want to tear America to shreds, because they hate America. Obama will be the cause..."
Interviewer: "They want to rule..."
Farid Salman: "Of course. Obama will be the cause of internal strife in the U.S. In addition, they want to destroy the European Union, and thus, the Semitic Middle East will be established. It's the Jews, not the Zionists, that are doing this."

In his first week and a half in office, US President Barack Obama has proven that he is a man of his word. For instance, he was not bluffing during his campaign when he said that he would make reconstituting America's relations with the Islamic world one of his first priorities in office.
Obama's first phone call to a foreign leader was to PLO chieftain Mahmoud Abbas last Wednesday morning. And this past Tuesday, Obama gave his first television interview as president to al-Arabiya pan-Arabic television network.
In that interview Obama explained the rationale of his approach to the Muslim world. "We are looking at the region as a whole and communicating a message to the Arab world and the Muslim world, that we are ready to initiate a new partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest," the new president said.
Obama distanced his administration from its predecessor by asserting that rather than dictate how Muslims should behave, his administration plans, "to listen, set aside some of the preconceptions that have existed and have built up over the last several years. And I think if we do that, then there's a possibility at least of achieving some breakthroughs."
In short, Obama argues that the root of Islamic world's opposition to the US is its shattered confidence in America's intentions. By following a policy of contrition for Bush's "cowboy diplomacy," and acting with deference in its dealing with the Muslim world, then in his view, a new era of US-Islamic relations will ensue.
Mehdi Khazali, the son of Ayatollah AbolGhasem Khazali, has said that the family of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is of Jewish origin. In March 2008, the Iranian Interior Ministry rejected Khazali's candidacy for the Majlis, and recently the Health Ministry rejected him for a position in the Iranian Medical Organization. Last year, Khazali stated that Ahmadinejad was elected fraudulently.

For many Muslims, there is a suspicion that when a Jewish man converts to Islam, he may secretly practice Judaism
During the late middle ages/ renasance era(1500-1700) spain, the spanish inquisition had the exact same concerns.
Given the subsequent history of the spanish empire, I am not so concerned about the possible ultimate victory of the caliphate.

The Spanish Inquisition was correct. Conversions under duress are always suspect for that reason. By the time of the great-grandchildren generation, though, the connection is generally lost.
TEHRAN, Iran -- An adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he will run for re-election in June. Hope. Change. Infidels.
Press adviser Ali Akbar Javanfekr told The Associated Press on Thursday that Ahmadinejad will run to complete the programs he has started since his election in 2005.
Other officials close to Ahmadinejad had suggested he will run for re-election, and the move had been widely expected.
Under Iranian law, a president can run for two back-to-back terms.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plans to honour notorious Lebanese militant Samir Kantar who was released by Israel in a prisoner swap last year, officials said on Thursday.
Kantar arrived in Iran on Wednesday and expressed his gratitude to Tehran for its role in backing the Lebanese and Palestinian "resistance" to Israel. "This country has played a crucial role in supporting the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance and I am here to express my deepest gratitude to this country," Kantar told AFP.
He also said he wished to meet Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and "shake his hand."
Kantar was released in July 2008 as part of a prisoner swap between Lebanon and Israel. Described as a monster in Israel where he was convicted for killing three locals, including a policeman and a four-year-old girl in a notorious attack nearly three decades ago, Kantar is considered a hero in some circles in Lebanon. He bashed the 4-yr Girl's head in-- anywhere they don't consider him a monster is a place I don't want to live
Iranian officials from Ahmadinejad's office said Kantar will be honoured by the president at a function in Tehran.

An eminent Iranian analyst said Tehran has begun sounding out a group of experts on a range of topics in preparation for possible face-to-face talks with the Americans.
This is the latest sign that a possible improvement in the relations between Tehran and Washington is on the horizon.
At the same time, a British newspaper reported yesterday that the US administration of Barack Obama is drafting a letter to Iran aiming to pave the way for direct talks between the two countries at odds for nearly three decades. "The Iranian leadership," Iranian analysts Mash Allah Shams Al Wa'etheen said "is grouping a higher committee of senior negotiators in different fields such as international relations, law, bilateral relations, [and] other issues, including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the American influence in Iraq& " in preparation for a possible dialogue with the US.
Speaking to Gulf News Al Wa'etheen, an advisor to the Tehran-based Middle East Centre for Strategic Studies, predicted the way ahead of the dialogue as "very rough", adding it "will be the biggest in the history of the bilateral relations," and will deal with a "package" of issues rather than individual topics.
He noted that indirect talks between the two sides have been with Iranian mediators in the US or other mediators in the Middle East, particularly Iraq."
The two sides had held several sessions of direct talks in Iraq in the last couple of years.
According to the Iranian analyst's expectation, a direct Iranian-American dialogue might start after three to four months from now, and specifically after the upcoming Iranian presidential elections this spring.
Meanwhile, the British Guardian newspaper reported yesterday that officials of US President Barack Obama's administration are drafting a letter to Iran from the president aimed at unfreezing US-Iranian relations and opening the way for face-to-face talks. It was a response to a letter of congratulations sent by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after Obama's poll victory.
The letter gives assurances that Washington does not want to overthrow the Iranian administration, but instead seeks changes in its behaviour. It would be addressed to the Iranian people and sent directly to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or released as an open letter.
The US State Department has been working on drafts of the letter since Obama was elected last November, the report said. However, a State Department official was quoted as saying the policy on Iran is under review at the moment, but "no decision on any specific policy initiative has yet been made by the State Department," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was quoted by the news agencies.

Cypriot authorities on Thursday detained an Iranian arms ship en route to Syria, a European diplomatic source said. The move apparently came after Israel and the United States requested that Cyprus stop the ship. It is carrying a large amount of weaponry, including artillery rounds and rockets that Israel believes are destined for either Hezbollah or Hamas.
The vessel left the Persian Gulf a few weeks ago and reached about 60 miles from Cyprus' port city of limassol on Wednesday. Since the ship was flying Cyprus' flag, the Cypriot authorities were the only ones authorized to confiscate its cargo.
According to the diplomat, Cypriot customs officials had contacted the Iranian boat and demanded that it sail to limassol to be checked.
The U.S. navy had earlier detained the ship in the Red Sea, but was forced to release it Tuesday when it became apparent that there was no legal basis for holding it. At a press conference in Washington, Admiral Mike Mullen, who heads the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said although American naval personnel boarded the ship and found the weapons, they had no legal authority to impound the arms. He also said he believes the ship is heading for Syria.
Mullen suggested that more stringent resolutions by the UN Security Council would be required, stating clearly that Iran is violating standards against arms smuggling.

If it's a ship flying their flag. Liberia, for example, can't confiscate the cargo of a Panamanian-flagged ship.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said on Thursday that Israel's Mossad espionage agency was behind the 2008 assassination of the Lebanese militant group's deputy leader Imad Mughniyah.
The reclusive Nasrallah said this was the conclusion of an investigation into the car bombing in Damascus that killed Mughniyah, who was on the U.S. most-wanted list for attacks on Israeli and Western targets. "The day won't come when we'll put the blood vengeance for the martyr Mughniyah behind us," said Nasrallah, vowing that his organization would avenge the assignation.
Nasrallah made the comments via a video link from his hiding place.

Absolute friggen' genius at work, I tell ya. Why didn't they share this revolutionary insight before they took power? It might have saved us decades of confrontation - and so much unavenged damage to our people and interests.
When a post-Vietnam War Dem talks about keeping all options open, they simply lack credibility. Cuz the use of force is just about excluded from the outset. If this fairly preposterous CinC actually uses force in any significant way, it will have the advantage of surprise. Though I wouldn't expect either the decision to use force or the follow-up to be well thought out, kinda mitigating the surprise advantage thinggie.
