Colorado sheriff's office says two detainees fled after locking deputy in cell
[FOX] A manhunt was still underway in Colorado early Friday for two detainees who authorities say escaped from a jail in Westcliffe on Sunday after reportedly locking a deputy inside a cell.

Jerry Williams, 39, and Bryan Webb, 30, overpowered the deputy then took her jail keys and radio before fleeing, according to the Custer County Sheriff's Office.

Williams had been jailed on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, illegal possession of a handgun and domestic violence. Webb had been locked up on drug charges, introduction of contraband into a detention facility and assault on a peace officer, the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post.

Company that produces Crystal Geyser bottled water pleads guilty to dumping ARSENIC in California's water system
[MAIL] A California company that produces Crystal Geyser bottled water has pleaded guilty to illegally dumping wastewater containing arsenic.

Crystal Geyser's parent company, CG Roxane, along with two contracted firms, were charged in 2018 with failing to disclose details of arsenic in wastewater transported from the bottling plant in Olancha, California.

Following a court case last week, the firm agreed to a $5million fine for storing and transporting the hazardous waste, federal prosecutors said.

The waste was produced by filtering arsenic out of Sierra Nevada spring water at CG Roxane LLC's facility in Owens Valley, authorities said.

CG Roxane was accused of discharging the wastewater into a man-made pond for about 15 years.

According to court records, the company created an 'arsenic pond' in a remote part of eastern California between Death Valley and the Sequoia National Forest and did not disclose that water pumped out of the pond and delivered to water treatment plants contained the poisonous heavy metal.

#3  lot of handwaving and hysterics. The arsenic is naturally-occurring and in most groundwater. They filter it out, store, and dispose of it...not a secret. The subcontractors didn't fill out the proper info, twice, and they will be fined as well:

According to court records, Crystal Geyser created an "arsenic pond'' in a remote part of eastern California between Death Valley and the Sequoia National Forest and then didn't disclose that water pumped out of the pond and delivered to water treatment plants contained the poisonous heavy metal.

United Pumping Services, a City of Industry waste-hauling corporation, and United Storm Water, an Industry-based company providing environmental and lake draining services, were also charged in the 16-count indictment for violations that allegedly happened in March and May 2015. The contracted companies face trial in April in Los Angeles federal court.

The case focuses on the bottling plant's wastewater, not the safety or quality of Crystal Geyser's water, prosecutors said.

#4  Note too, that feds 'adjusted' the level of acceptable arsenic in water. Albuquerque always had it in the water. Then without any scientific evidence, lowered it forcing the city to spend millions on new filtering systems in their purification works. Now here you had a city with a good size population drinking under the old standards for over 50 years. Could they show any significant difference in its population's health vs one that was on the higher standard. No.

#9  EPA maximum arsenic level(MCL) used to be 50 parts ber billiion. Now the MCL is 10 parts per billion. Wastewater or other arsenic contaminated material needs to have a Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)test performed to determine if the waste stream needs to have special handling or containment performed before it can be disposed.

I have been involved in two instances of going through this procedure before obtaining filter backwash water permits for water containing arsenic. It's not a big thing unless you avoid doing it.

#10  Related foreign content in bottled water: was killing time in scenic Concrete Washington waiting to begin the day's lawn mower racing festivities when a double-bottomed tanker truck pulled up to a standpipe and connected to it and began filling. Millennials are the least likely generation to get a flu shot because they are 'too busy' and the majority say they agree with some anti-vaxxer ideas
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • A new survey found 55% of millennials said they didn't get the flu shot this year

  • Most said it was because they didn't have time or they'd forgotten to get one

  • Researchers believe anti-vaxxers may be to blame because 60% of millennials say they agree with some anti-vaccination beliefs

To be fair, I didn’t worry about such things when I was that age. It was only once the trailing daughters were born that I started to even think about it, and only once they were in school that I started actually getting flu shots. And then there’s the announcement that this year’s flu shot doesn’t match the virus in the wild...

More cops died from suicide than were killed in the line of duty in 2019, study finds
  • Advocacy group Blue H.E.L.P. released data showing at least 228 police officers killed themselves in 2019, compared to 132 who died in line of duty

  • It is the highest number of police suicides since start of data collection in 2016

  • New York state lead with 27 self-inflicted deaths, followed by California with 23 and Texas with 19

  • Overwhelming majority of officers who took their own lives in 2019 were men

  • More than 80 per cent of the officers who fell victim to suicide were white

Border patrol agents in California arrest teen boy with drugs strapped to his body
[FoxNews] A 14-year-old Mexican teen was caught at a U.S.-Mexico border checkpoint in California with three bundles of crystal methamphetamine strapped to his body, authorities said.

The boy was with two other minors and one adult, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said, when he approached the State Route 94 checkpoint in Jamul, east of San Diego, Monday night.

As border agents questioned the group, who were in a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, a drug-sniffing K-9 alerted the agent.

The group was moved to another area for a secondary inspection. They were searched and the packages of drugs were found on the teen's waistline, a news release said.

Another 49 plastic-wrapped packages were found in three backpacks inside the car. In total, agents discovered 54 pounds of drugs worth an estimated $102,000.

Authorities arrested the 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, both Mexican nationals. The driver, a 34-year-old man, and another 16-year-old, both American citizens, were also taken into custody.

Agents in the San Diego sector have seized 42 million worth of methamphetamine since Oct. 1.

Warren Asked Obama to Exonerate Ethel Rosenberg
[Frontpage] Radical U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who could be the next Commander-in-Chief, asked then-President Barack Obama in his final days in office to formally exonerate Soviet atomic spy Ethel Rosenberg, according to media reports.

This was a not a request for a mere presidential pardon, which the Department of Justice cautions does "not erase or expunge the record" of the conviction, but a request that history be rewritten.

Warren, now a leading contender for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, sent a letter dated Jan. 10, 2017, on behalf of one of Rosenberg’s sons.

"I am writing on behalf of my constituent, Robert Meeropol, and his family to request that you provide a thorough review of their request that you issue a proclamation exonerating his mother, Ethel Rosenberg. Ms. Rosenberg was executed by the United States for conspiracy to commit espionage in 1953."

The request originated with the Rosenberg Fund for Children, a 30-year-old 501(c)(3) nonprofit that, in founder Meeropol’s words, was created to enable radical left-wing activists "to rally around the children of this era’s targeted activists." The group boasted on its website that its petition in late 2016 to President Obama "garnered 60,000 supporters, both from within the ranks of RFC donors, and beyond," and that it "received extensive media attention that had global reach."

US Vice President Mike Pence to attend Holocaust forum in Israel
[Jerusalem Post] Vice President Mike Pence will attend a conference on the Holocaust in Israel.

The White House announced Wednesday that Pence and his wife, Karen, would attend the Fifth World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial, in Jerusalem on Jan. 23.
This year’s conference coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Allies’ liberation of Auschwitz. Haaretz quoted Israeli officials as saying that Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, also would attend. Pelosi’s office would not confirm the travel.

In a teleconference Wednesday with reporters, Cherrie Daniels, the State Department’s special envoy on Holocaust issues, and Elan Carr, the department’s special envoy to monitor antisemitism, outlined Trump administration plans to mark the 75th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation.
Daniels said the State Department would honor the Holocaust rescuers this year.

"These types of themes can show that for people like those who resisted and those who tried to rescue their fellow citizens at great risk to themselves, kept their humanity during the darkest of times," she said.

First stable semiconductor neutron detector

Homeland Security might soon have a new tool to add to its arsenal.

Researchers at Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory have developed a new material that opens doors for a new class of neutron detectors.

With the ability to sense smuggled nuclear materials, highly efficient neutron detectors are critical for national security. Currently, there are two classes of detectors which either use helium gas or flashes of light. These detectors are very large—sometimes the size of a wall.

Northwestern and Argonne's material introduces a third class: a semiconductor that can absorb neutrons and generate electrical signals that can be easily measured. The semiconductor-based detector is also highly efficient and stable. It can be used both in small, portable devices for field inspections and very large detectors that use arrays of crystals.

The study will be published in the Jan. 16 issue of the journal Nature.

"People have imagined semiconductor neutron detectors for a long time," said Northwestern's Mercouri Kanatzidis, who led the research. "The idea was there, but no one had the right material to do it."

Kanatzidis is the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry in Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. He has a joint appointment with Argonne.

US special operations just purchased Sig Sauer's new machine gun (video)
[American Military News] The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has completed its safety certifications of Sig Sauer’s latest machine gun offering, the MG 338, and has begun purchasing the weapons systems.

In a press release, the firearms company confirmed it had passed the certifications and delivered the first of its machine guns to the U.S. military’s elite military command on Wednesday. The new machine gun is touted as a lightweight new weapon that can bridge the gap between the U.S. military’s current M240 (7.62x51cal) medium machine guns and its Browning M2 (.50cal) heavy machine guns.

Zumwalt class may get new missile...
[Warrior Maven] The Navy’s newest destroyer may fire a not-yet-to-be fielded Conventional Prompt Strike conventionally-armed missile engineered to hit anywhere on earth within an hour, service program managers said.

The weapon, now being considered by Navy weapons developers for the emerging USS Zumwalt, will bring new attack options to the stealthy destroyer being prepared for combat as soon as 2021, Capt. Kevin Smith, Zumwalt-class destroyer Program Manager said Jan. 15 at the Surface Naval Association Annual Symposium.

"This would be the perfect platform for Conventional Prompt Strike, Smith said.

The Conventional Prompt Strike weapons program, emerging during former President George W. Bush era, is designed to arm a ballistic missile with a conventional warhead, bringing the range and speed similar to a nuclear weapon to conventional strike. The weapon has virtually unprecedented range for a conventional weapon and has the ability to hit anywhere in the world in a matter of minutes in some instances. The concept with the weapon is to enable fast attack against enemy targets from safe standoff distances quickly, potentially at the beginning of a conflict. This would enable rapid attack without forcing having to wait for deployment options or place vital war assets in closer range of enemy attack. In essence, should a conflict quickly break out, CPS will give command authority a "rapid hit" option to possibly deter further war or destroy crucial enemy targets with "tactical surprise."

Firing this weapon from the new stealth destroyer brings several new strategic and tactical advantages. First and foremost, arming the ship with CPS aligns with the service’s strategic requirements for the ship which, as of 2017, migrated from an initial conception of a largely land attack destroyer to the "premier strike platform in the surface fleet," Vice Adm. Rich Brown, Commander, Naval Surfaces Forces, said at the SNA symposium. As a "blue water" attack platform, the Zumwalt is now being prepared for major power warfare on the "open ocean" and therefore armed with long-range weapons, sensors and other lethality-enhancing technologies.
