Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief March 31, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONFIRMING NRF ACTIVITY IN KABUL ON 28 MAR – Sources from within the Ministry of the Interior confirmed to analysts the night attack on a Taliban security outpost in Eastern Kabul did take place. As many as 15 Taliban were reportedly killed in the attack which was near the Polcharkhi Education Center. We assess this information as valid and agree with other analyst groups that the Spring Offensive has indeed commenced. Other confirmed social media accounts tied to Resistance forces have hailed the operation and appear to confirm the news regarding the 2023 campaign season.

  • WOMEN’S RADIO STATION SHUTTERED IN BADAKHSHAN – Radio Sada-e-Banwan (Voice of Women) has been forced to close after Taliban authorities accused the station of playing music during Ramadan. It is not clear if the popular station will be allowed to reopen.

  • RUSSIA ACCUSED OF ‘PLAYING GAMES’ WITH IEA – A source in Kandahar said that Taliban senior leadership scoffed at Russian statements made at a regional SCO security conference in India which implied Afghanistan would be a base of international terror operations in the near future. The source said serious considerations were being made to cancel recent economic deals made with Moscow and that a review of recent major infrastructure deals involving Russia should be undertaken. The source said that, in Kandahar at least, Russia is not considered a friend.

  • REPORTS SAY IMPRISONED WOMEN’S EDUCATION ACTIVIST HAS REFUSED TO SIGN CONFESSIONS – The imprisoned education activist and founder of the NGO Pen Path, Matiullah Wesa, would not sign a declaration of guilt and is currently in the process of being transferred to a different (unidentified) prison. It is still not clear what charges Wesa faces other than accusations of sedition against the regime. The hashtag #FreeWesa is starting to trend on social media and the international community has lodged multiple complaints with the Taliban over his arrest
.

CONFLICT TRACKER:
Kabul: The ALF attacked the Taliban police headquarters at approximately 1800hrs local time in Kabul. The ALF used several hand grenades to target the Taliban guarding the entrance to the facility. Two Taliban were killed and 1 was wounded in the attack. There was no confirmation of any possible ALF casualties.

NEXT 24 HOURS
RESISTANCE FOCUSING ON KABUL SO FAR – The two recently confirmed attacks by Resistance forces which are said to have kicked off the Spring Campaign season both took place in Kabul. It is too early to tell but it may signify intentions among Resistance leaders to ‘take the fight’ to the Taliban in Kabul. While many previous Resistance operations were recorded in Kabul during 2022, they tapered off as the Taliban launched offensive operations in Panjshir, Badakhshan, Ghor, Baghlan, and Takhar Provinces. It seems likely that Kabul will be the focus of the Resistance. At-risk Afghans in Kabul can expect to see operations targeting administrative and military/police infrastructure in the city. Resistance targets have historically avoided potential collateral damage situations that could cause non-combatant casualties but such operations are difficult to control. Throughout 2022, Resistance groups commonly announced their operations on social media. This year, we expect far tighter controls will be put in place by Resistance leaders with regard to releasing information concerning operations. What this means for those at-risk Afghans in the country

Somali troops make fresh gains against Al-Shabaab in Galmudug
[ShabelleMedia] The Somali army took over the areas of Tix, Barag Sheikh Aamir, Alihele and Ali Ahmed which are all under the Galcad District of Galgaduud Region.

The State media, quoting military officials reported that the al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them...
gunnies have been defeated in the attack on their bases and were forced to flee from the villages.

Al-Shabaab disabled the phone networks in Galcad district after their hideouts have been surrounded by the government forces and the community fighters in Galmudug
...a semiautonomous region in central Somalia, bordering Puntland on the north. Galmudug is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation, but rather considers itself autonomous within the larger Somali federalism, for what that's worth...
state.

The takeover coincided two days after the Somali president Hassan Sheikh visited Aden Yabaal district, where he announced the second phase of the operation to liberate Somalia.

In Mid January 2022, the SNA in collaboration with locals and US military captured Harardhere as well as the nearby town of Galcad in Galmudug region, marking the biggest blow to al-Shabaab since the war started.

Harardhere was a major base for pirates hijacking fat merchantmen until 2011 and its fall was welcomed as a significant step towards the end of al-Shabaab presence in Galmudug.

Somalia army repulses Al-Shabaab raid in two military bases
[Garowe] The Somali National Army [SNA] on Wednesday repulsed two would-be catastrophic attacks targeting military bases in the country, it has emerged, even as the country prepares to officially begin another round of crackdown against the al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
bully boyz in the Holy month of Ramadan.

According to security forces, the first attack took place in Kismayo
...a port city in the southern Lower Juba province of Somalia, at the extreme southern end of the country (always assuming Somalia can be called a country). It is the commercial capital of the autonomous Jubaland region....
, the capital of Jubaland state in the Western part of the country while the second was thwarted at Beledweyne in HirShabelle, central Somalia where the bully boyz have been on the receiving end for the last seven months.

According to the report, the SNA soldiers with the backing of the Ma'awisley clan militia managed to repulse al-Shabaab bully boyz who had crossed River Shabelle within the Bardheere area south of Beledweyne with an intention of attacking a nearby military base.

And in the western part of Somalia, the reports further indicated, the troops backed by Jubaland State forces also thwarted a separate attack by al-Shabaab fighters who fired mortar rounds in the Sanguni area in southern Somalia, where the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] soldiers operate.

So far, the government is yet to issue a statement with regard to the two attempted raids but in their friendly media outlets, the al-Shabaab bully boyz claimed they killed 32 soldiers in the separate attacks.

Their claims could not be independently verified by Garowe Online. The government forces have intensified their attacks against al-Shabaab since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared an all-out war against the bully boyz last year. Last week, the government said over 3,000 bully boyz were killed during the first phase which ended a few weeks ago.

And early this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched the second phase of operations against al-Shabaab which is believed to be the last complex crackdown before the Somali National Army takes full responsibility for security within the country upon the exit of ATMIS troops.
According to a statement published on pro-Al-Shabaab websites, the attacks took place in areas near Kismayo, the seat of Jubaland and the outskirts of Beledweyne in HirShabelle.

The group claimed seizing control of the bases located in Barsanguni and Bardhere villages following the attacks. There was no a statement from the government regarding the issue.

The corpse count include local clan fighters known as Macawisley who are helping the government forces in the fight against al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
. At least 15 killed in Bardhere while 17 died in Barsanguni base raid.
More from another Shabelle Media article:
A battle broke out early on Wednesday morning in the Bardhere area of Hiran region between the local forces supported by the SNA and Al-Shabaab.

The skirmish came after Al-Shabaab fighters who crossed the Shabelle River on the west side attacked a base belonging to the allied forces, who managed to fend off the ambush.

It remains sketchy the casualties caused by the fighting that locals said involved heavy weapons being used by both sides. The militants were overpowered and repulsed later.

The latest reports say that the Al-Shabaab fighters who attacked the Bardhere area in Southern Baledweyne this morning suffered losses and fled to nearby villages.

Fifth Column
Gun control activists storm Tennessee State Capitol
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Gun control screeching muppets were seen storming Tennessee's State Capitol Thursday amid rising fears of a left-wing uprising at a rumored protest in Washington, DC.

Footage of the insurrection shows progressive protesters battling with cops as they attempted to gain access to the legislature in Nashville. Hundreds of people were seen inside the lobby and yelling from the gallery at concerned politicians.

The protest against guns comes after transgender
...mutton, dressed up as pork...
shooter Audrey Hale on Monday bumped off six people, including three nine-year-old kids, at a Christian school in Nashville.

In a separate demonstration, trans screeching muppets yesterday invaded Kentucky's State Capitol in Frankfort to protest a Republican-backed bill to ban transgender procedures for children. Among the mob was a self-described 'genderqueer clown nun', who immediately drew comparisons to the QAnon Shaman of the January 6 riot.

The left-wing demonstrations come amid fears of a Trans Day of Vengeance which has been threatened for Washington DC on Saturday. Twitter bosses this week rushed to remove thousands of posts advertising the protest.

[NPASYRIA] Iraqi forces announced on Wednesday the killing of a number of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Israel Protests: ‘They’re stealing the election’: 20,000 attend Tel Aviv rally backing overhaul
[IsraelTimes] 10 arrested for blocking main highway; Demonstrators carry signs reading ’I’m a second-class citizen,’ some chant ’Arabs are whores,’ ’may your village burn,’ ’Kahane lives on’

Waving Israeli and Likud flags, some 20,000 protesters marched in support of the government’s judicial overhaul plans in Tel Aviv on Thursday, the second such rally since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paused the judicial legislation earlier this week amid growing public pressure.

The right-wing Im Tirtzu organization organized the "March for Freedom" in the heart of the city, with the aim of "being freed from the restraints of the High Court," and proclaimed that the "people have chosen judicial reform." Several government ministers urged their supporters to attend the event.

Many protesters at the Tel Aviv rally carried signs declaring "I’m a second-class citizen," and "They’re stealing the election," as they marched from the Tel Aviv Museum to Kaplan Street.

Others held signs emblazoned with slogans such as "I believe Rothman and Levin" — two of the overhaul’s political architects, Justice Minister Yariv Levin and the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee chair Simcha Rothman.

Some demonstrators then marched onto Tel Aviv’s Ayalon Highway, blocking traffic, employing a tactic used by anti-overhaul protesters over the past few months. Police said a large number of officers were on the scene. Some 10 people were detained in festivities, and the highway was eventually reopened.

Earlier in the rally, some protesters surrounded news hound Moti Kastel of Now 14, a channel considered favorable to the Likud, with some cheering his name.

Several chanted, "The people demand judicial reform" and "Bibi king of Israel," using the prime minister’s nickname, for Kastel’s broadcast.

Many pro-government screeching muppets are unhappy that Netanyahu halted the progress of the judicial overhaul legislation for talks with the opposition, believing that the democratically elected government should not have to compromise.

Uri, a 33-year-old from Tel Aviv, told The Times of Israel he wrote the slogan "I’m a second-class citizen" on his banner because he felt that his vote was being stymied by a leftist court.

He declined to share his last name because he was "afraid to be fired because it’s not acceptable to have the point of view that I have."

"Democratic results don’t matter, because the judicial system overrules the democratic process, they have too much power," he charged. "The results of the elections literally don’t matter."

Uri claimed a link between judicial activism and the prime minister’s ongoing corruption trial, saying: "There have been cases against Benjamin Netanyahu that are totally fake, they charge him with allegations to overrule the elections."

"You cannot overrule democracy with fake accusations."

Using a megaphone, one protester said, "We are Golani, we are Paratroopers, are we not as valuable as pilots?" A key point of pressure on the government in recent weeks has been the warnings by growing numbers of reserve pilots that they would not report for training sessions if the coalition’s plans continued.

Others — many with their faces covered — shouted slogans against Arabs, including ’May your village burn,’ ’Arabs are whores, Jews are sweethearts,’ and ’Kahane lives on,’ — a reference to the late bad boy rabbi Meir Kahane.

Dozens were also filmed harassing and chasing after journalists, as pro-overhaul demonstrators did in their previous protest last week.

Some rally-goers held up a banner denigrating US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body....
, who expressed his worries about the overhaul on Tuesday.

The leaders of the reservist pilots’ protest announced Tuesday that they would resume training and operational activity after the controversial legislative plan was paused, but indicated that they were remaining alert in case it was revived.

Likud MK Tally Gotliv, who was at the protest, praised it as a "display of tremendous power of right-wingers with values, who love the country."

"I want to remind Knesset members on the right of their duty to pass the judicial reform. We owe it to those who gave us this power. We will pass the reform, we will not fall prey to extortion by threats from the opposition or the radical left. We came to govern and that’s what we’ll do," she told demonstrators.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said in a statement that the demonstrations were "important for democracy" and urged demonstrators to refrain from violence.

"I trust the police commissioner to direct the police in accordance with the minister’s policy — equal treatment for all," he said.

Ben Gvir has been a vocal critic of the police’s handling of the anti-overhaul protests, calling for officers to use harsher measures against demonstrators, and has sought greater direct control of the force since becoming national security minister. He has railed against anti-overhaul protesters who block roads as "anarchists."

Break their bones’: Ahead of right-wing TA rally, some activists call for violence
[IsraelTimes] Voice notes and text messages circulating in WhatsApp groups ahead of pro-government demonstration threaten overhaul opponents and journalists

A right-wing rally in favor of the government’s judicial overhaul plans was slated for Thursday evening in Tel Aviv, as reports emerged that some attendees announced their intention to engage in physical violence during the demonstration.

The right-wing Im Tirtzu organization announced a “March for Freedom” in the heart of Tel Aviv Thursday night aimed at “being freed from the restraints of the High Court,” and proclaiming that the “people have chosen judicial reform.” Several government ministers called on their supporters to attend the event.

Weekly mass protests have been held for nearly three months against the planned legislation, which critics say will politicize the court, remove key checks on governmental power and cause grievous harm to Israel’s democratic character. Proponents of the measures say they will rein in a judiciary that they argue has overstepped its bounds.

Arab Israelis largely stay away from pro-democracy protests against legal overhaul
Community, angry that most Jewish Israelis didn’t defend its rights during decades of discrimination, feels it doesn’t have a place in rallies featuring generals as speakers

Minor clashes on Gaza border as Palestinians mark Land Day
[IsraelTimes] Around 100 Paleostinians held a protest on the border with the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip earlier as part of Land Day commemorations, which marks the Israeli government’s expropriation of Arab-owned land in the Galilee on March 30, 1976, and the ensuing demonstrations in which six Arab Israelis were killed.

According to a military spokesperson, several Paleostinian suspects hurled grenades toward Israeli troops stationed on the border, who responded with tear gas and low-caliber rounds from a Ruger rifle.

No soldiers are hurt by the grenades, the spokesperson tells The Times of Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces says the gathering has been dispersed.

Several Paleostinians are reported hurt by tear gas inhalation.

Syria accuses Israel of airstrikes in Damascus for second night in a row
Yesterday’s attack can be seen here.
[IsraelTimes] State-run news agency claims air defenses intercepted ’hostile missiles’ over capital but that damage was caused, less than 24 hours after similar attack maimed two soldiers

The Israeli Air Force carried out Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s in the Syrian capital Damascus shortly after midnight on Friday, for the second night in a row, according to Syria’s state-run media outlet.

The state news agency SANA reported that Syria’s air defenses intercepted the "hostile missiles" over the capital, though the "aggression" managed to cause some material damage. Damascus regularly claims to successfully intercept IDF strikes, but military analysts doubt these assertions.

There were no immediate reports of injuries in the strike.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the strikes targeted an arms depots for government forces and Iran-backed groups just south of Damascus.

Footage circulating on social media showed explosions in the sky, apparently from Syrian air defense missiles.

Less than 24 hours earlier, SANA said that the IAF targeted sites in Damascus, wounding two soldiers and causing material damage. The conditions of the two soldiers were not immediately clear. In recent years, numerous Syrian soldiers serving in air defense units have been killed in Israeli airstrikes.

Thursday and Friday’s alleged airstrikes came after two attacks in recent weeks against the Aleppo International Airport, also attributed to Israel. Those attacks temporarily closed the airport’s runway.

One of the strikes last week also targeted an underground munitions depot at the adjacent Nairab military airport, according to two unnamed "regional intelligence sources" who spoke to the Rooters news agency. The sources said the site was used to store missile-guided systems that had been delivered by Iranian cargo flights.
