Coronavirus Jailbreak: California Gov. Gavin Newsom Commutes Sentences for 14 Convicted Killers
[Breitbart] California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is responding to the Chinese coronavirus crisis by commuting the sentences of 14 felons convicted of murder or being involved in a murder.

Newsom made the decision to more quickly commute felons’ sentences in the midst of the coronavirus, providing early release through parole to about 19 felons ‐ some of whom killed children and one convict who murdered a pregnant woman.

Two of the felons are immigrants to the U.S., and Newsom’s purpose for commuting their sentences is to have them avoid deportation.

The 19 felons given commutations by Newsom include:

Rep. Velázquez diagnosed with ‘presumed coronavirus infection’
[ROLLCALL] Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez announced Monday that she has been diagnosed with a "presumed coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
infection," just three days after the New York Democrat joined scores of House politicians for a vote on the $2 trillion stimulus package and a signing ceremony with top leaders.

Velázquez said she first started feeling sick "in the wee hours of Sunday morning."

"I developed the abrupt onset of muscle aches, fevers, nasal congestion and stomach upset. I noticed that I could no longer smell my perfume or taste my food. After speaking with The Attending Physician by phone, I was diagnosed with presumed coronavirus infection," she said in a statement.

Velázquez was one of the more than 200 House politicians who rushed back to Washington to vote on the coronavirus package after Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie said he planned to try to force a recorded vote on the bill. A quorum of more than 216 members convened in the House chamber to defeat Massie’s opposition and pass the bill.

#3  I noticed that I could no longer smell my perfume or taste my food.

This seems to be a common symptom of Chinese virus disease.

It is disturbing because the virus apparently has some affinity for nerve cells. Perhaps the olfactory nerves serve as a gateway for the infection in cases of Chinese corona encephalitis.

New Jersey Backs Down on Gun-Store Closures
[Free Beacon] New Jersey gun stores will reopen after Democrat governor Phil Murphy abandoned an attempted statewide shutdown stemming from the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, Murphy said the stores will be able to operate "by appointment only and under limited hours" during the duration of his emergency shutdown order. The move came two days after the federal government updated its essential business guidance to include gun stores, ranges, and manufacturers. Murphy said he disagreed with the nonbinding guidance issued by the Department of Homeland Security but would follow its prescriptions.

"In accordance with the guidance released over the weekend by the federal Department of Homeland Security, we will allow firearms retailers to operate," Murphy said during a Monday press conference. "It wouldn’t have been my definition, but that’s the definition at the federal level, and I didn’t get a vote on that."

Murphy's initial order closed not only businesses, but the state's background check system, making it effectively impossible to purchase legal firearms in the state. His reversal may signal an end to the debate over whether gun stores should be considered "essential" businesses as states enact stay-at-home orders to combat the pandemic. Pennsylvania and Delaware have also reversed bans. Texas told cities and counties within the state on Friday that gun stores are "essential" and cannot be closed.

Police: Store Employee Charged After Shooting 1 of 3 Burglars
[ARLNow] Police: Store Employee Charged After Shooting Would-Be Thief

An employee of a local shop is facing charges after police say he shot someone breaking into the store.
Note the original title. They also did not mention what in particular he did wrong.
The incident happened Sunday morning in the Green Valley neighborhood, shortly before 5 a.m.

Police say a group of three suspects broke into a store on the 2400 block of Shirlington Road and began stealing cash and merchandise. The employee, who was in a backroom at the time, picked up a gun, opened a door into the store, and shot one of the suspects, according to an Arlington County Police press release.

The employee then retreated, before going back into the store and firing another shot, police said. The wounded suspect was a juvenile male; he suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The two other suspects fled the scene before police arrived.

Following consultation with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the employee, Hamzeh Abushariah, 33, of Washington D.C. was charged with Malicious Wounding, Reckless Handling of a Firearm and Violation of a Protective Order. He is being held without bond.

Gov. Whitmer reverses course on coronavirus drugs, is now asking feds for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine
h/t Instapundit
[Detroit Metro Times] - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer drew fire from some on the right after the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) sent a letter last week threatening "administrative action" against doctors who prescribed two experimental drugs that could potentially help coronavirus patients.

The Whitmer administration has since removed the language threatening doctors from the letter and is now asking the federal government to send shipments of the drugs, Bridge magazine reports. The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency authorization for the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate on Saturday.

Democrats to seek aid for troubled union pensions in next relief package
[Washington Examiner] House Democrats planning a new and sweeping economic relief package to respond to the coronavirus say they’ll include federal aid for troubled union pensions.

Democrats have just begun drafting the relief bill, which they said would include enhanced family paid leave, more money for food stamps, and new worker safety requirements.

The pension bailout, if included in the measure, could cost tens of billions of dollars if it matches a pension relief package the House passed last year.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters she believes President Trump has signaled interest in aiding troubled pension programs but that it was excluded from the $2.2 trillion package signed into law last week because Senate Republicans, led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, did not want it in the bill.

"President Trump was actually supportive, but Mitch McConnell was not," Pelosi told reporters. "And so, he said we'll save it for the next bill. Well, here's the next bill."

House Democrats earlier this month introduced an economic relief package, but it was rejected by Senate lawmakers, who negotiated the $2.2 trillion bipartisan deal with the Trump administration.

The sidelined House proposal included the language in the House-passed Butch Lewis Act, a multiemployer pension bailout measure with a nearly $100 billion price tag. It would provide low-interest loans to the nation’s most underfunded union pension plans to help them stave off looming insolvency, and it would provide an additional $71 billion in direct cash assistance to those struggling pension plans. The measure would help ensure pension benefits for 1.3 million workers.

Pelosi did not indicate this week whether the draft of the new economic relief bill will include the Butch Lewis Act, but a Democratic aide confirmed it, acknowledging the plan would have to be bipartisan.

"Our proposal is the Butch Lewis Act, but, more importantly, we need and want multiemployer pension reform that works," a senior Democratic aide told the Washington Examiner. "We are not so committed to an approach that we can’t negotiate a solution."

The House-passed bill won support from dozens of House Republicans, but it never received consideration in the Senate.

Joe Biden has yet another gaffe-filled media appearance
More on yesterday’s story.
[NYPOST] Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
...Old, boring, a plagiarist, fond of hair sniffing and grabbing the protruding parts of women, and not whatcha call brilliant...
conducted a gaffe-filled interview on MSNBC Monday, kicking off his media appearance by referring to the epicenter of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
by the wrong name.

"I suggested we should have people in China at the outset of this event, when it all started, in Luhan Province," Biden told the network, meaning to refer to the city of Wuhan, in Hubei Province, where the virus originated.

The Democratic front-runner went on to claim that the Trump administration withdrew CDC staffers in the months leading up to the virus outbreak, likely stemming from a Rooters report from last week claiming that the administration slashed CDC staff in China.

"We had people in our administration, we had CDC people in other countries because we wanted to anticipate when in fact another virus would occur, when in fact a pandemic might occur as a consequence of a spreading virus in another country, to act quickly. The president withdrew those people," Biden said.

The problem, however, is that regardless of staffing cuts, the CDC began offering to send a team of experts to the Chinese province back in early January, according to the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

As he did last week, Biden again gave the wrong date for a USA Today op-ed he penned on the virus, again claiming it was posted on Jan. 17 when it was actually Jan. 27.

The ex-VP also mixed up his drugstores and government agencies, accidentally referring to CVS as CVC.

When thanked by the MSNBC co-host for sitting down with her, Biden had another awkward remark, responding, "Well, thanks for giving me the time. So they won’t wonder where I am."

"They" appears to refer to the American people, likely an acknowledgment of his general absence from the campaign trail, as the pandemic keeps the 77-year-old trapped in his Delaware home.

Federal Judge Rules Killing Babies is an ‘Essential Service’
[THECONSERVATIVETREEHOUSE] TEXAS – […] Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced last week that abortion providers were covered by a state order that required postponement of non-urgent medical procedures to preserve hospital beds and equipment during the pandemic.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel in Austin ruled that Paxton’s action “prevents Texas women from exercising what the Supreme Court has declared is their fundamental constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy before a fetus is viable.”
*sigh* Once more through the minuet: Appeals Court, Supreme Court, final ruling in the favour of the great state of Texas, though limited to the duration of the emergency. And those on the other side will do their best to fund raise and politic on the back of it.

Sheriff Villanueva ousted as as head of emergency operations
[FOXLA] In the middle of the global coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
outbreak, The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday voted on an ordinance that puts the county CEO in charge of coordinating emergency operations, and replaces Sheriff Alex Villanueva in that role.

The board's original vote to make the change -- as part of updating its plan for emergency preparedness and following lessons learned from the 2018 Woolsey Fire -- came back in November.

That report highlighted a lack of coordination between all the agencies managing the fire and its aftermath that led to missteps. Firefighters, sheriff's deputies, public health workers and public works employees -- among others called to deal with the blaze -- operated within departmental silos and relied on ad hoc responses, according to the report.

"The sheriff did not coordinate any of that," Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said. "If he thought that he was in charge of that ... honestly I didn't see it."

Kuehl said who takes the lead in any given emergency depends on the type of emergency, and more than two-thirds of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, counties have designated either their CEO or department of emergency management to take on that role.

"In this (public health) emergency it would be totally inappropriate for any law enforcement agency to be in charge of anything other than law enforcement," Kuehl said. "This is the appropriate and 21st century response to emergencies."

Seattle police chief tells residents to call 911 if called racist names amid coronavirus pandemic

Seattle's chief of police said in a Monday night video that she wants residents to call 911 if called racist names during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Washington state is no place for hate. In a show of solidarity between police and community, I'm joined today by Lori Matsukawa," Chief of Police Carmen Best said, referring to the retired KING 5 news anchor who joined her in the video.

"Hate crimes have no place in our community," Matsukawa continued. "We're better than that, Washington. We're all trying to deal with the COVID-19 public health crisis together. If you are a victim of a hate crime or hate-based harassment, please call 911."

"Exactly," Best said as the video cut back to her. "We will document and investigate every reported hate crime. Even racist name-calling should be reported to police. We take this information very seriously. If aren't sure if a hate crime occurred, call 911. We are here to help and will respond to investigate."

"When we work together," Matsukawa said. "We're safer together," Best said, finishing her sentence.
She has nothing better to do than ignore the 1st Amendment

#1  I so wish this was the Bee, but I know it's not.

Let's all focus on meaningless feel-good bullshit. It's easier that dealing with real problems and we get to congratulate ourselves on what a great job we're doing.

#7  So have the mayor and the police chief solved all of Seattle' other problems? Murder rate at 0? All homeless off the street? Every child graduating high school? All garbage collected and potholes fixed? Etc?

#9  It was noted (wished) elsewhere that if enough of this bullshit were to take place that organized citizens groups might form that asked officials like that to either prove their worth or move on.
