Taliban’s Latest Move: Arrest of Two Former Government Army Officers in Kabul
[8am] Sources in Kabul city have reported that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
have arrested two former government army officers in the country’s capital.

These individuals, named Moslem and Beryalai, were apprehended on Tuesday, May 23rd, in the second district of Kabul.

The detained individuals are brothers and originally hail from the village of Pojava in the Dara district of Panjshir province.

Although the motive behind the arrest of these two former military personnel remains unclear, sources indicate that they were engaged in "labor work" in Kabul and have no affiliation with any group.

The Taliban have not made any statements regarding this matter thus far.

It is worth noting that since coming into power, the Taliban have detained, imprisoned, and in some cases, killed hundreds of former government soldiers.

The Taliban have shown no accountability to any individuals or human rights

Daily Evacuation Brief May 26, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • RELATIONS BETWEEN IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE – General Mubeen Khan, a former Taliban spokesman and leader of police shared a social media post where he openly mocks the Iranian President over escalating tensions about water rights. In the video, Khan fills a jug of water and tells his followers he will send it to the Iranian President. Such gibes appear to be resonating in Tehran where government leaders are under pressure from the agrarian sector to replenish drought-stricken land in the Eastern portion of the country. For its part, Tehran ratcheted up pressure on the Taliban when the Foreign Minister flatly rejected any talk of recognition for the regime until it forms an inclusive government. While Iran has staunchly maintained its call for inclusivity, the Taliban now could be at risk of losing a sometimes ally in its search for legitimacy. Bizarrely, the standoff over the water rights could alienate Iran and cause it to, if not support the tough line taken by the international community, at least not oppose it.

  • PAKISTAN CONTINUES TO DEAL WITH SPIKE IN TERRORIST ATTACKS – Yesterday in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provinces, Pakistan’s Police and Military forces engaged with various terror groups. At least three operations were conducted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two were reported in Balochistan. At least 3 police were killed and an unknown number of military personnel have been wounded in the operations. A source in Peshawar says a prisoner that had been captured in the wake of the attack on a Hungarian oil facility may have provided vital information regarding those who participated in the attack and that Police and Military forces were busy tracking down the suspects when the clashes took place.

  • THE GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN HAS PLACED THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER AND HIS WIFE ON THE NO-FLY LIST – A spokesman explained the move was taken after a meeting of the various prosecutors involved in a multitude of cases came to a consensus that the couple presented a flight risk.

  • HOUSE SEARCHES REPORTED IN POLICE DISTRICTS 17 AND 4 – Several bystanders in the neighborhood reported active Taliban searches along secondary roads in the Districts and some noted that a few roads had been blocked off by Taliban security vehicles. The searches began yesterday evening and continued well into the night. It was not clear what the Taliban were looking for and a few residents complained that some had asked for bribes while the searches were conducted. Some locals say the searches are related to the Spring Festival of Badam Bagh and that Taliban units were told to look for places playing music and/or serving alcohol but this has not been confirmed.

  • WOMEN’S PROTEST IN TAKHAR DISPERSED – A protest called The Unity and Solidarity Wave of Takhar Women took place on Thursday and was attended by a mix of former University professors, activists, and businesswomen. The marchers chanted slogans related to employment opportunities, education, and better overall gender equity. Taliban security personnel blocked the route of the marchers and eventually dispersed the crowd by force. There were no reports of casualties or injuries as of publication time.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kabul: A vehicle was reportedly hit by an unknown explosive device in Police District 4. It was not clear why the vehicle was targeted or if it was related to the searches in the district that took place later in the day.
Kabul: An ALM team has claimed to have targeted and assassinated an unidentified Taliban intelligence operative. The action reportedly took place last night.

NEXT 24 HOURS
HOUSE SEARCHES TO CONTINUE IN KABUL – Taliban searches are expected to spread to other Police Districts today after operations in PD 17 and 4 that continued overnight. We have no information about what the searches are focused on but approximately 100 Taliban personnel and 30 vehicles are involved. At-risk Afghans in Kabul should be cognizant of the operations that are taking place.

Somalia forces foil major Al-Shabaab attack
[Garowe] Hawk-eyed Somalia security forces foiled a would-be deadly al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
attack, police revealed, with the Death Eaters targeting flood-prone Beledweyne town in Central Somalia where the group has been carrying out attacks mostly against innocent civilians and security officers.

Sirad Omar, a police brass hat, said security forces intercepted a jacket wallah with explosives in a bag just moments before he blew them up. This was a well-calculated security move that saved many innocent lives, said the officer, while acknowledging contributions by members of security teams.

"The police ordered him to halt, but he threw the bag and fled," he said. "He was almost blowing himself up and the outcome would have been absolutely devastating. This was a timely intervention and we are grateful to the coppers for their swift action."

The explosive was left at the entrance of a popular restaurant near the Liqliqato Bridge in the bustling Howlwadag neighbourhood, a frequent meeting spot for traditional elders and military officials. The Death Eaters usually target civilians, members of security forces, and senior government officials.

Although the explosives managed to detonate, they did not cause mass damage, the officer said, adding that only a few buildings were affected. The suspect, who is believed to be a member of al-Shabaab managed to escape and a manhunt operation has been launched to pursue him, he said.

A few months ago, in the same central Somali town of Beledweyne, at least 20 people were killed and 36 others injured in triple explosions. The al-Shabaab holy warrior group grabbed credit for the attack, which was widely condemned by members of the international community and local politicians.

Beledweyne town has been facing attacks from the Death Eaters for a while but the recent operation against the group significantly reduced their threat. The government of Somalia is activating the second phase of operations against the group which has lost significant territories in recent months.

NIA Court Convicts One More In Assam Hizbul Mujahideen Case
[OneIndia] A special court of the National Investigation Agency has convicted another accused in a conspiracy case related to the formation of a Hizbul Mujahideen
...Party of Holy Warriors, founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989. One of the Pak sock puppets waging jihad in Indian Kashmir. It was originally organized as the armed wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the sword arm of Jamaat. Hizbul murdered many of the pro-independence intelligentsia in Kashmir. After the organization was taken over by Syed Salahuddin Dar and several other ex-Hizb leaders were assassinated between 2001 and 2003...
module case in Guwahati.

The court sentenced Mohammad Saiful Alam of Hojai district, Assam to five years in jail. He was awarded rigorous imprisonment and also slapped with a fine.

"Five people were chargesheeted by the NIA on March 11, 2019, and two of them, identified as Md. Sahnawaj Alom and Md. Omar Faruque was convicted by the NIA Court on December 23, 2022," an NIA release read.

The case was originally registered at the P.S. Jamunamukh, District Hojai, Assam under various sections of the IPC and UA(P) Act. The NIA re-registered the case on October 5 2018.

The probe by the NIA revealed that the three convicted accused had conspired with one Kamruj Zaman to establish a module of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Assam.

"During 2017-2018, they organised a series of meetings in various mosques, such as Milonpur Masjid, Islampur Masjid and Solmari Masjid, in and around the Jamunamukh area. The meetings were used to spread the banned outfit's hardcore fundamentalist ideology, with speeches about alleged atrocities and Jihad. Youth attending these meetings were told about the need to raise a module of HM for committing terrorist acts in response to the alleged atrocities etc," the NIA release also read.

The NIA also found that Kamruj and Shahnawaz conspired to raise funds for the procurement of arms and ammunition.

"Omar, alongwith another accused Jaynal Uddin, provided logistic support. To keep their communications a secret, Kamruj Zaman and Saiful Alam had also installed the Blackberry messenger (BBM) App on their mobile sets. Kamruj had used this app to stay in touch with Hizbul Mujahideen cadres in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
," the NIA said.

These persons had also conspired to carry out kabooms and armed attacks on innocent civilians in the non-Moslem areas of Lumding and Hojai on Dussehra eve, the agency also said.

Small drone from Lebanon downed over northern border town
[IsraelTimes] Military says it monitored device’s flight as it entered Israeli airspace; earlier this week, IDF dropped flyers in southern Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
warning against border incursions

Israeli forces on Thursday downed a small drone that flew over the border from Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces said.

A statement from the IDF said air control units tracked the unmanned aircraft "throughout the incident" before taking it down near the northern town of Zar’it.

It did not specify how the drone was brought down as it entered Israeli airspace; however, it was believed to have been done using electronic warfare means.

"The IDF will continue to operate in order to prevent any attempt to violate Israeli illusory sovereignty," the statement added.

In an image shared by the army, the drone appears to be a commercially available quadcopter manufactured by Chinese company DJI.

Defense officials have previously noted that at least some of the drones the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group uses for surveillance purposes are commercially available devices.

There was no immediate statement from Hezbollah or affiliated media outlets on the drone downing.

Lebanon and Israel are technically in a state of war and the heavily guarded border is commonly penetrated by drones from both sides.

Lebanon regularly complains about Israeli surveillance drones invading its airspace, but the IDF maintains that such incursions are necessary to track the activities of Hezbollah, which the Lebanese government is supposed to keep in check.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military dropped flyers in southern Lebanon warning locals against crossing the border.

Ali Shoeib, who works for the al-Manar Hezbollah mouthpiece, published images of the pamphlets that were distributed near the southern Lebanese village of Kfarchouba.

"Think before you act. Your breaches of the border and your actions make the situation dangerous, and have already resulted in your injury," the flyers read.

The IDF did not publicly comment on the flyers, which appeared to be similar to those distributed by the military in southern Syria in recent years.

During a conference on Monday, the head of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate warned that Hezbollah’s leader was "close to making a mistake" that could spark a regional war, while warning that a conflict between Israel and Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. Air Force Warthogs patrol Middle East waters in response to Iranian actions
[StarsAndStripes] A U.S. attack aircraft known for close air support in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is seeing action in maritime patrols amid recent tensions between the U.S. and Iran, according to the Navy.

A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” jets are part of an increased rotation of U.S. aircraft and ships in the Strait of Hormuz, off Iran’s coast, U.S. 5th Fleet said this week.

Navy destroyers, Coast Guard fast response cutters, P-8 maritime patrol aircraft and unmanned systems are also part of the patrols, 5th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Tim Hawkins said Monday.

“Our ramped-up defensive posture is in response to Iran’s unwarranted and unlawful behavior of late,” Hawkins said.

The U.S. accuses Iran of seizing a commercial oil tanker in late April and another one in early May, as part of a series of 15 incidents in which the U.S. says Iran interfered with ships in the Middle East. The Iranian government says its recent seizures of oil tankers were due to ship violations or legal disputes.

#6  IIRC, and please help I read this a long time ago.

Seems like they came up with sort of a solution to fold the wings so it was practical space wise. I think they even had a sort of ugly work around for an arrester hook which didn't bend the frame when using. Seems the real hangup was finding a way to launch it, on account of the direction the front wheel deploys, forward to down, and keep it locked in place for the catapult.

I think the study was put together for this exact situation and theater back in the 80s and basically concluded it would be a rare mission which, space being a luxury, could be handled by gunships and current air platforms, a role which would be handled by escort ships, and there would be friendly air bases nearby anyways.

This is me, back in the 90s, trying to learn about the models I was making, and the internet made cranky grind pings, so help or gap fills please.
