Record-breaking number of migrants arrested at southern US border: Illegal crossings soar to nearly TWO MILLION in less than a year as 2,200 stream into country in just one day
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday released their data for July, showing that 1,822,160 people have arrived so far this fiscal year

  • The last fiscal year - from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021 - saw 1.66 million arrivals: in itself a record

  • CBP data goes back to 2000, and shows that there has been a steady uptick in arrivals

  • The number of migrants encountered by CBP agents declined again in July, however - the second straight month of falling numbers

Afghanistan
An explosion took place in the Darulaman area of Kabul
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

#1  Nothing more on the Khaama Press and Tolo News sites, though perhaps they’re still translating their reports into English. The Afghan Digest reports just

A car bomb was reported in Police District 7 in Kabul. 4 civilians were reportedly injured in the blast, and the target of the attack was not clear. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

I have no idea if Darulaman is the same as PD7. — perhaps someone here remembers Kabul’s geography well enough to say.

The only other interesting item in the Afghan Digest’s Daily Brief is this:

Presumably in response to the 1-year anniversary of Taliban rule, fighting broke out across the North as Resistance forces attempted to remind the world that an active resistance exists. Panjshir witnessed the bulk of the fighting, and most incidents appear to have been offensive actions taken by the NRF against Taliban positions. At the end of the day, the NRF announced it had liberated seven villages from Taliban control and were continuing their advances toward larger Taliban bases. A source allied with the Resistance said the actions represent the opening of a campaign to liberate Panjshir but was skeptical that the offensive could be maintained for long. The force ratio in Panjshir was last estimated to stand at 23:1 in favor of the Taliban, and the NRF is hampered by a lack of light/heavy transport.

#2  Darulaman is PD6. Everything west of the main highway is PD6, and east of it is 7. Darulaman is practically on the highway so either it was a car bomb or an IED placed on the highway maybe?

#3  West Kabul is where the Shiites live, which might make the Darulaman bomb another ISIS-K attack.

But PD7 must be a different attack.

Damn the Taliban for censoring the news media, making our data collection a much chancier affair!

...Sorry. That’s facile when so many are really suffering under their rule. Ditto for the same complaint about the governments of Europe and England.

#4  Looks like four Taliban died as their vehicle hit a landmine, TW. The highway is not well paved and has many potholes. It would be easy to place a mine and cover it with gravel I suppose. The Taliban were local law enforcers.

US carries out 4th airstrike in Somalia this month
[ShabelleMedia] A US Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in central Somalia has killed 13 al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
terrorists, Somali officials and state media said on Sunday.

The airstrike destroyed terrorist hideouts in the Hiran region, military officials told Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The operation was conducted in coordination with the Somali military and killed 13 terrorists, Somali National Television reported.

The US military has yet to confirm the airstrike, which would be its second in less than a week in Somalia.

Earlier this week, US Africa Command said it carried out "three airstrikes against al-Shabaab bully boyz who attacked Somali National Army Forces near Beledweyne," the capital of Hiran.

A statement said four bad boyz were potted in the Aug. 9 strikes.

Begin boilerplate...
Somalia has been grappling
with increasing insecurity for years, with al-Shabaab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.

Since at least 2007, al-Shabaab has waged a deadly campaign against the Somali government and international forces that has claimed thousands of lives.

The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
has also warned of growing instability in the country, with its periodic reports on Somalia this year detailing violent mostly peaceful attacks by al-Shabaab and pro-ISIS/ISIS groups.

There were at least 1,518 civilian casualties — 651 killed and 867 injured — in terrorist attacks in Somalia in 2018, followed by 1,459 — 591 killed and 868 injured — in 2019, according to UN in Somalia.

Egypt's Armed Forces kill major terrorist leader in North Sinai
[AlAhram] The Egyptian Armed Forces have killed major terrorist leader Hamza al-Zamli along with a number of other faceless myrmidons during an anti-terrorism military operation in Gelbana village in North Sinai.

The faceless myrmidons had infiltrated the village and tried in vain to plant explosives at its entrances and use its residents as human shields during the operation.

Strip, was working in a liquor factory in the Israeli settlement of Yad Mordechai before leaving in 2005 due to the siege of the strip.

He was detained by the Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, group on suspicion of collaborating with the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. He was also imprisoned on charges of theft and drug trafficking.

Al-Zamli fled Gaza in 2015 as he faced accusations of stealing money from a shop in Rafah and then joined the holy warrior group ISIS, becoming one of its so-called judges.
It certainly sounds like he held no grudge against the Zionist Entity, or perhaps he saw them as unbeatable, unlike Egypt.
Al-Zamli, who changed his name to Abu Kazem al-Maqdisi, is also believed to be involved in the deadly attack on North Sinai's al-Rawda Mosque that killed some 235 worshippers during a Friday prayer in November 2017.

His brother was also killed in 2017 during anti-terror operations in Sinai.

Iraq
Civilian killed in Sulaimani anti-terror operation
[Rudaw] A civilian was killed in an anti-terror operation in Sulaimani province after being caught in the crossfire between security forces and the suspects, the city’s internal security forces (Asayish) said on Sunday.

Sulaimani’s Asayish announced the arrest of two suspects accused of terrorism who subsequently tried to escape custody to no avail. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
a citizen was killed during the clash that ensued.

The victim was later identified as 22-year-old Ahmed Shawkat, who departed this vale of tears after being shot by two bullets during the confrontations, according to Rudaw ground news hound Peshawa Bakhtyar.

Shawkat was a fourth-stage medical analysis student and worked at a glass factory in Sulaimani's Tanjaro area during his summer break.

The force added that it has launched an investigation into the incident.

Local military police in Erbil shot a young man in April.

Iraqi forces arrest drug dealer, seize million captagon pills
[Rudaw] Iraqi police forces in western Anbar province on Sunday arrested a drug pusher who was in possession of a million captagon pills, Iraqi state media reported.
The other question is who he associated with in addition to his narco pals — ISIS, Al Qaeda, Olde Saddam Hussein Baathists, Iran, one of the tribes...
"Anbar police arrested a drug pusher who was in possession of a million Lexus pills," Hadi Razij Kassar, head of the province’s police force said.

The term Lexus is often used for captagon pills that have higher quality and purity.

Containing an amphetamine-type stimulant, captagon was the name of a trade drug patented in Germany in the early 1960s. It was used to treat attention deficit, narcolepsy, and other conditions before it was banned.

Following 2011 and the Syrian civil war, the illicit captagon pills started spreading in several countries across the Middle East, with the main supplier being the war-torn Syria itself.

According to AFP, while Syria is the Middle East’s main producer of captagon, the main consumer in the region is Iraq’s southern neighbor Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
Syria has effectively been turned into a narco-state, concluded an investigation by the New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

in 2021 revealing that more than 250 million captagon pills were seized around the world that year.

Officials have scrutinized the Syrian government, claiming their major involvement in the drug trade.

Iraqi security forces in late April said they had broken up a drug trafficking ring and seized over six million pills of the amphetamine-type stimulant captagon.
It sounded impressive at the time, but now not so much.
According to research by the New Lines Institute released in April, the captagon trade in the Middle East topped $5 billion in 2021, an increase from $3.5 billion in 2020.

The General Directorate of Narcotics Control in the Ministry of Interior in June confirmed that it had arrested more than 20,000 drug users and seized millions of narcotic pills and more than 500,000 kilos of psychotropic substances during the last two years and a half.

Turkish forces targeted with rockets in Nineveh province
[Rudaw] A military base housing Ottoman Turkish troops in the Iraqi northern province of Nineveh came under rocket attack Monday afternoon. No casualties or material damage was reported, according to Kurdish counter-terrorism forces.

The Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said in a statement on its Facebook page on Monday that the military base in Zilkan, Nineveh province, was targeted with two rockets.

"One rocket landed inside the base while the other landed in the vicinity of Gudad village without causing casualties or material damage," said the CTD which often reports such incidents.

The rockets were believed to have been fired from near Gugjali neighbourhood in djinn-infested Mosul

(ISIS) controlled parts of Nineveh province. The base has come under rocket attacks dozens of times in recent years but such attacks have not been confirmed by Ankara.

The presence of Ottoman Turkish forces in Zilkan has been widely condemned by the Iraqi government, with criticism reaching a peak when a shelling in Zakho, blamed on The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

The incident has harmed diplomatic relations between the two countries, with Iraq filing a complaint against Turkey in the United Nations

Palestinian tries to stab undercover cops during home search, is shot dead — police
[IsraelTimes] Border Police officers sought to search Muhammad Shaham’s East Jerusalem home in Kafr ’Aqab for illegally held weapons

A Paleostinian man was rubbed out by undercover Israeli troops early Monday morning after he attempted to stab them during a search of his home in East Jerusalem, police said,

According to police, Border Police officers arrived at the home in Kafr ’Aqab, the northernmost East Jerusalem neighborhood, to search for illegally held weapons.

"The family members came out and started confronting the troops when suddenly, the main suspect came out holding a knife and tried to stab our troops who responded by shooting," a police front man said.

The alleged assailant was treated by police medics and taken for further treatment but later died, police said.

He was identified by Paleostinian media as Muhammad Shaham.

Images published by the Border Police showed Shaham lying on the floor of his home next to a knife he’d apparently used to attack the troops with.

The Kan public broadcaster reported that Shaham’s family claimed a police officer told them there was a misidentification and they arrived at the wrong address. Police responded by saying there was no mistake and they had a search warrant.

Still, police did not say if any illegal weapons were found at the home.

The UN’s Mideast envoy said he was "deeply disturbed" by the killing, and called for an investigation.

"My deepest condolences to his family. This requires an immediate, independent and thorough investigation," Tor Wennesland said on Twitter.

As troops left the neighborhood, Paleostinians hurled stones and other objects from rooftops at the Border Police armored vehicles.

Kafr ’Aqab is within the Israeli-drawn municipal boundary of Jerusalem, which Israel considers its unified capital. It is therefore off-limits to the Paleostinian Authority, which is headquartered in the nearby city of Ramallah and governs parts of the West Bank. But the neighborhood is on the opposite side of the security barrier Israel built in the mid-2000s.

No Israelis were hurt in the incidents, according to police.

In separate raids across the West Bank overnight, troops detained 19 wanted Paleostinians and seized several makeshift weapons, the IDF said Monday morning.

3 Arab Israelis arrested for alleged IS ties, plans to join jihadist group in Africa
[IsraelTimes] Shin Bet says 21-year-olds from Umm al-Fahm sought to travel to Nigeria where ’intense fighting’ occurs; Bedouin man planned to fight for group in Israel

The Shin Bet security agency announced Monday that in recent weeks three Arab men were arrested for alleged affiliation with Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and plans to fight with the jihadist group in Africa.

On July 14, Muhammad Farouk Yusef Agbaria and Abd al-Mahdi Masoud Muhammad Jabarin, both 21 from the Arab city of Umm al-Fahm,
... home of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement, the militant arm of the Israeli branch of the Muslim Brotherhood ...
were detained over their alleged plans to fly to Africa to fight alongside Islamic State, the Shin Bet said in a statement.

The Shin Bet said the pair were "closely monitored by security forces, given that they were identified to have extreme Salafi-jihadist ideologies."

According to the Shin Bet, Agbaria and Jabarin consulted another Umm al-Fahm man, who recently returned to Israel from fighting with al-Qaeda in Africa, on how to travel there.
Africa is a big and busy place. Where in Africa did he actually go?
Agbaria separately contacted a local in Nigeria, in order to get directions to a district where "intense fighting by the organization" was taking place, the statement said.

Ahead of their planned trip to Africa, the pair also practiced shooting and "consumed bully boy Islamic State content," including beheading videos, the agency added.

In a separate case, a Bedouin man from a village in the Rafa’i’a area, east of Beersheba, was detained on July 22 for alleged affiliation with Islamic State.

In his interrogation, Muhammad al-Rafa’i’a, 30, admitted he supported Islamic State and its goals, and sought to fight for the group in Israel, the Shin Bet said.

Al-Rafa’i’a also conducted shooting practice for the purpose of fighting for the jihadist group "when the time comes," according to the agency. The Shin Bet did not release a photo of al-Rafa’i’a.

Agbaria, Jabarin, and al-Rafa’i’a were each charged with "serious security offenses" and other weapons-related offenses, according to the Shin Bet.

"The Shin Bet will continue to act in accordance with the authority given to it by law and will take all the measures at its disposal in order to deal with phenomena related to extreme Islamic ideologies, and to thwart intentions to harm the security of the State of Israel, and will strictly prosecute all those involved in terror activities," the agency said in the statement.

Earlier this year, Israeli authorities arrested dozens of alleged Islamic State members following two deadly terror attacks — in Hadera and Beersheba — by Arab Israelis thought to have been inspired by the jihadist group. Another deadly attack in Jerusalem in March was later revealed to have been committed by an Islamic State supporter, who also killed an elderly couple in the same area three years prior.

IDF says it foiled Hamas attack tunnel with two branches along northern Gaza border
[IsraelTimes] Official says tunnel first struck during last year’s war, but since repaired and extended by Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,; it crossed into Israeli territory, but posed no danger due to underground wall

The Israel Defense Forces on Monday revealed it discovered and "foiled" a tunnel dug by the Hamas terror group in the northern Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip that crossed into Israeli territory though it did not manage to penetrate Israel’s border barrier.

According to the IDF, the "terror tunnel," which had two branches, did not pose a danger to Israeli towns along the border, as Israel has a high-tech underground wall protecting its southern towns against Gazook attack tunnels, which once posed a major threat.

Israel’s subterranean barrier — an underground reinforced concrete wall that is studded with sensors to detect tunnels — runs parallel to the overground border — a 20-foot (six-meter) steel fence — inside Israeli territory, several dozen meters from the internationally marked border.

The IDF also has a network of radar arrays, other surveillance sensors, and remote-controlled weaponry along the border.

The IDF said it had found the tunnel as part of a "constant and ongoing effort to locate terror tunnels and neutralize them."

"This is an attack tunnel with two branches, which crossed into Israeli territory but did not cross the new security barrier, and therefore did not pose a risk to the residents of Israel at any stage," said Brig. Gen. Nimrod Aloni, the outgoing commander of the IDF’s Gaza Division.

He appeared to be indicating that had Hamas members exited the tunnel, they would have still faced Israel’s tall fence running along the border.

According to Aloni, a part of the tunnel had been struck during May 2021’s 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, but had since been repaired and rebuilt, including the two new branches which extended into Israel.

"Recently, we identified efforts to restore the route of the old tunnel, and after conducting scans we located the tunnel with the two branches," he said.

The IDF did not say exactly how deep the tunnel was, but said its entrance was in the Gaza City area. The tunnel was rendered inoperable after the military poured massive amounts of concrete into the two passages.

During a three-day battle with the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group last week, the IDF struck another attack tunnel, this one from southern Gaza. It too did not cross into Israel due to the underground wall.

Israel's security forces bust massive weapons smuggling ring
[Jpost] Revealed on Monday, Israel Police's special operations unit and the IDF bust a major smuggling attempt in southern Israel.

Israel Police's special operations unit, in a joint operation with the IDF, busted a major weapons smuggling attempt in southern Israel earlier this month, the units revealed on Monday.

Multiple units, both ground units and airborne, from Israel Police and the IDF worked in tandem on August 1 to arrest a man who had been transferred weapons over the Jordanian border in northern Israel.

Two additional suspects, one of which is suspected of being the head of the smuggling network, were arrested shortly thereafter. They had seen the first smuggler getting arrested and fled the scene. Following major intelligence efforts and a large police chase, the two were arrested near Ben-Gurion Airport.

The weapons, according to the security forces' suspicions, were intended for criminal use in the Negev and Hebron areas.

"This is a real arms race and we are working night and day in a continuous fight against this challenge," said special operations unit commander Ronen Kalfon. "It is clear to us that any such weapon can easily be used to kill innocent people."

The investigation ended on Monday and a prosecutor's statement will be filed to the court later in the day for the three of them, one of which is a resident of the Palestinian Authority and the other two residents of east Jerusalem, all of which are in their 30s.

#1  How do we know that's not how the Taliban are doing business for now? Because they don't have the logistics for international distribution [anymore], that's how they get the drugs to someone who does. Hunhh?

The Afghans send it to the border, the Eye-ranians 'catch' it, then make a show of doing an incredible lot for the shit heads at the UNODC, and 'destroy' it.

The stuff finds its way into Turkey piecemeal and is shipped out into Europe.

US says a drone attack targeted its Syria base, no casualties
[Jpost] The attack took place at the base near where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq meet. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

A drone attack hit a compound run by US troops and US-backed Syrian opposition fighters in eastern Syria on Monday, with no casualties, the United States military said.

"Operation Inherent Resolve forces, in coordination with our Maghaweir al-Thowra
... in the Rantburg archives as Maghawir al-Thawra, they were previously called the New Syrian Army, founded by anti-Assad Syrian army officers in 2015 to fight ISIS...
partners, responded to an attack by multiple unmanned aerial systems in the vicinity of Al-Tanf Garrison," the US military said in a statement.

WHAT IS THE CONTEXT IN SYRIA?
Maghaweir al-Thowra is US-backed Syrian opposition fighters. The US and coalition troops are based at Al-Tanf to train Syrian forces to counter Islamic State militants.
Al Ahram adds:
It said the troops successfully engaged one of the drones preventing its impact while a second one detonated within the opposition forces' compound, ``resulting in zero casualties or reported damage.'' The other attempted dronezaps were not successful, it added.

Maj. Gen. John Brennan
...director of the CIA under the Obama administration. One of the deeper dwelling denizens of the Deep State, probably the guy who lit the match that launched the Russiagate coup attempt...
, the commander of Combined Joint Task Force, condemned the dronezap. ``Such attacks put the lives of innocent Syrian civilians at risk and undermine the significant efforts by our Partner Forces to maintain the lasting defeat of ISIS,'' he said, using an acronym for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

The attack occurred hours after Israeli Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s on western and central Syria killed three soldiers, maimed three others and caused material damage. A Syrian opposition war monitor, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the Israeli strikes hit Syrian army positions where Iran-backed fighters are based.

Drone attacks on al-Tanf have been rare.

In October last year, U.S. officials said they believe Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
was behind a drone attack that month in al-Tanf saying at the time that they believe that the attacks involved as many as five drones laden with explosive charges. It said the drones hit both the U.S. side of al-Tanf garrison and the side where Syrian opposition forces stay. The October attacks came days after an Israeli airstrike on central Syria.
