#1  Classical stage and movie actress Marie Doro was a direct descendant of American political leader Patrick Henry. She was born Marie Katherine Steward in Pennsylvania in 1882. She began as a chorus girl in musical comedy under the management of impresario Charles Frohman, who took her to Broadway. There she worked for actor/stage director William Gillette, appearing in many melodrama, thrillers and comedies including "The Admirable Crichton" in 1903, "Sherlock Holmes" in 1905-06, "Electricity" in 1910 and "Diplomacy" in 1914 est. On tour of England in the mid-1900s, she starred with the unknown teenage Charles Chaplin. She starred in at least 18 movie, first under contract to Adolph Zukor in 1915, making her film debut in the starring role as Carlotta in Edwin S. Lasky Feature Co. in 1916.

Although still a well-known movie star by the early 1920s, she became increasingly disillusioned with Hollywood and her acting career. She returned to the Broadway stage for one last time in "Lillies of the Field" in 1921. She moved to Europe for a time and starred in a few films in Italy and England, the last being Maurice Elvey's )Sally Bishop (1924)_ in 1924,' co-starring with Henry Ainley in the Stoll Film Co. production. In later life she became increasingly drawn to a more spiritual life, and ended as a recluse, actively avoiding friends and acquaintances. She was briefly married to actor Elliott Dexter, the marriage soon ending in divorce. She had no children and never remarried.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief October 8, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • THE PASSPORT DIRECTORATE HALTS WORK – The Passport Directorate announced the stoppage of passport issuance for an unspecified amount of time. The official reason given for the stoppage stated technical difficulties. However, previous reporting has indicated the existence of a far-reaching investigation into the illicit black market for passports, visas, and national identity cards that has resulted in several arrests. A source in the Ministry of the Interior stated that some arrests had already been made of Directorate employees in Jalalabad and Kabul and that more were coming.

  • LAND REFORM PROBLEMS IN TAKHAR – Conflict has been reported in the Khwaja Bahauddin District as a result of a Kuchi
... Kuchi means ‘nomad’ in the Dari (Persian) language. Kuchis are Pashtuns from southern and eastern Afghanistan. They are a social rather than ethnic grouping. Though traditionally nomadic, many have been settled in northwestern Afghanistan, in an area that was traditionally Uzbek and Tajik, after strong encouragement by the Taliban government. Nowadays only a few thousand are still nomadic herders and traders. Others have become farmers, settled in cities or emigrated. The largest population of Kuchis is probably in Registan, the desert in southern Afghanistan...
raid that is said to have been supported by the Taliban forces in the Province. Approximately 100 Tajik and Uzbek families were reportedly forced out of their homes which were then occupied by Kuchi families. Unconfirmed reports state the Kuchis involved in the raids came from Waziristan in Pakistan. No casualty figures were available.

  • META BANS TALIBAN ACCOUNTS – While some Taliban-affiliated accounts on Facebook had previously been shut down, the ban is now thought to have been extended to non-state-owned pro-Taliban sites. A full list of these pages is being compiled.

  • SENIOR ETIM TERROR GROUP LEADER SPOTTED IN BADAKHSHAN – A photo emerged on social media depicting a reputed leader of the Eastern Turkish Islamic Movement,
...also known as the Turkistan Islamic Movement and the East Turkistan Islamic Movement, a Uighur jihadi group originally from China’s Xinjiang province. But they mostly made hijira, primarily to join Al Nusra in Syria, secondarily to North Waziristan and to ally with the Taliban in Afghanistan......
Sadiq Ighori, standing between the Taliban’s Qari Fasihuddin and Maulvi Amanuddin. Ighori is a Chinese national of Uyghur descent and is also believed to have been appointed as a leader of foreign fighters in the Ministry of Defense. Ighori is thought to be wanted by Chinese authorities in connection with a bus bombing in Pakistan that killed scores of Chinese nationals.

  • ISIS-K TAKES AIM AT THE ICRC - A pamphlet released on ISIS-affiliated social media sites lays out six reasons it is heresy to seek out International Cross and Red Crescent assistance and leveled claims that the aid agency is simply a tool of an anti-Muslim United Nations campaign. It is possible the accusations could initiate attacks against Red Crescent facilities operating in the country and/or region.

CONFLICT TRACKER:
No confirmed reports of conflicts in the past 24 hours.

NEXT 24 HOURS
TAKHAR LAND REFORM ISSUE – As we have witnessed in past instances where the Taliban have urged nomadic tribes to occupy ethnic enclaves in the North, there has been a violent response. Typically, these have not involved support from Resistance forces and/or the Taliban, but violence has taken place between the ethnic groups. It is possible this will occur in the Khwaja Bahauddin District of Takhar over the next several days.

Terror cell dismantled in Nador and Melilla thanks to security cooperation between Rabat and Madrid

, announced on Tuesday the dismantling, in cooperation with Spanish security services, of a terrorist cell operating in Nador and Melilla.

Two men, aged 34 and 39, were nabbed in the Moroccan Northeastern city of Nador and nine others were captured in Spanish enclave Melilla in a simultaneous operation carried out by Moroccan and Spanish law enforcement agents.

The members of the busted cell were promoting turban ideology on social media networks with the aim of recruiting vulnerable people for their obscurantist terror projects.

Mobile phones, SIM cards, a computer and digital material were found by the police while searching their premises. According to preliminary investigation, the emir of the terrorist cell had links with the jihadist network dismantled in December 2019 in the suburbs of Madrid and Nador.

Last week, Moroccan authorities arrested a member of ISIS terror organization in Casablanca in cooperation with U.S. intelligence services.

These arrests, which disrupt major terror plots, show the importance of cooperation ties existing between Moroccan security services and their American and European partners.

Knife-wielding man arrested after entering Iran embassy in Denmark
[IsraelTimes] Police say man is an Iranian citizen; Tehran complains Danish police slow to react to threat; incident comes amid mounting protests against Islamic Republic

An Iranian armed with a knife who tried to enter Iran’s embassy in Copenhagen was arrested on Friday, Danish police said, as Tehran’s mission criticized officers’ slow response.

"A 32-year-old Iranian citizen was arrested Friday morning after having breached the grounds of the Iranian embassy in Copenhagen carrying a knife," Copenhagen police said in a statement.

The man was apprehended by an embassy employee on its grounds before reaching the mission’s building, it added.

The suspect will be brought before a judge on Saturday, who will decide if he should remain in pre-trial detention.

The police said the Iranian man is accused of vandalism, violence and an offence against someone protected by diplomatic status.

The Iranian foreign ministry "strongly criticized" the Danish response.

"It is regrettable that in the heart of Europe, such an attack can be perpetrated against a woman and ambassador who enjoys diplomatic immunity, and that the police are not at the scene in time," it said in a statement.

Copenhagen police said it had "taken the necessary security measures in regards to the Iranian embassy, its employees, etcetera."

The three bad boyz were potted in an encounter at Drach, Shopian, while one was killed in Moolu.

In a thread of tweets, the Kashmir Zone Police informed about the encounters.

In a first tweet, it said, "Three local #murderous Moslems linked with proscribed #terror outfit JeM killed in #encounter at Drach #Shopian. Second encounter at Moolu is in progress. Further details shall follow."

The police added that the killed murderous Moslems Hanan Bin Yaqoob and Jamshed were involved in the killing of SPO Javed Dar on Sunday at Pinglana in Pulwama and an outside labourer from West Bengal on September 24 in Pulwama.

In the second encounter, one more terrorist of LeT was killed in Moolu's encounter, said the police. It also added that the operation was still going on.

SPO Javid Ahmad Dar was killed by the murderous Moslems recently. Dar was killed when the murderous Moslems fired at a joint team of the police and CRPF.

The encounters are taking place in the region when Union home minister Amit Shah is in Jammu and Kashmir. Amit Shah is scheduled to address a rally in Baramulla at 11 am today. Security has been stepped up.

Unidentified drone targets YBS base in Shingal: Official
Both Iran and Turkey produce and use drones, and both are currently displeased with the Kurds, so who knows?
[Rudaw] An unidentified drone targeted a base of the Shingal Resistance® Units (YBS) on Thursday, an official confirmed to Rudaw, saying the attack resulted in material and immaterial damage.

Mahma Khalil, a Shingal MP in the Iraqi parliament, told Rudaw's Nahro Mohammed that the dronezap targeted a YBS base on Mount Shingal, adding that the extent of the damage remains to be determined.

The Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said in a statement that Ottoman Turkish warplanes bombarded the YBS base at 9:30PM, "resulting in casualties and injuries," without specifying the number.
Would Turkey send both jets and drones to attack?
Rojnews, a media outlet affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), said that the drone targeted the Sardasht camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) at 8:15PM, without providing any further information.

Ankara occasionally carries out such attacks against the YBS in Shingal where several armed forces affiliated with the Iraqi government, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the PKK, and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) are present.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
considers the YBS to be an offshoot of the PKK, an gang fighting for the enhanced rights of Kurds in Turkey. The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara, which carries out regular military campaigns against the group at home and in northern Iraq, including in the Kurdistan Region.

At least one person was killed and 10 others were maimed when a suspected Ottoman Turkish drone targeted the YBS headquarters in Snune sub-district in June.

Suspected arson attack causes severe damage to Jordan Valley settlement farm
[IsraelTimes] Produce, infrastructure worth an estimated NIS 12 million destroyed in fire; minister Shaked blames ’Paleostinian terrorists’ for the blaze.

A fire at a farm in a West Bank settlement on the night of Yom Kippur, which destroyed an estimated NIS 12 million ($3.4 million) worth of produce and equipment, is being investigated as an incident of deliberate arson.

The incident, which took place late on Tuesday night at the Dor Farm on Moshav Mehola in the northern Jordan Valley, took 11 firefighting teams to extinguish, according to the Samaria Fire Station.

A packaging plant on the farm was at the center of the fire and it took until the early hours of the morning to extinguish the blaze.

"According to the preliminary findings, there is a reasonable suspicion that this was arson. A special investigative team has been established to examine the incident," the fire department said in a statement to the press.

The police said that suspicions the fire was deliberately set "have strengthened" since an investigation was opened.

Several tons of produce were being stored in the plant at the time of the blaze, including dates, almonds, and willow branches for use over the upcoming Sukkot holiday. All were destroyed in the fire.

The packaging plant, which included refrigerator rooms, packaging machinery and a solar energy system, was destroyed along with farming equipment and refrigerators, a spokeswoman for the Mehola community said.

Nevo Dor, the Dor Farm manager, told Kan Bet radio that security camera footage showed arsonists setting the fire.

He said the produce which was destroyed in the blaze was worth some NIS 2 million ($560,000), and the packaging plant and all its equipment was worth another NIS 10 million ($2.8 million).

Although the plant is insured, the produce itself was not, Dor said.

Head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council David Elhayani described the fire as "another painful incident of agricultural terror," and called on security services to combat the phenomenon.

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked visited the farm on Thursday morning and accused "Paleostinian terrorists" of starting the fire.

"They started the fire, they threw Molotov cocktails. There are cameras, there are footprints. We need to catch these holy warriors and give them at least 10 years in jail," said Shaked.

She said that farmers in the settlements "are facing agricultural crime, protection rackets, theft, and destruction of produce," and argued that the Knesset should legislate minimum sentences for such crimes.

Separately, a protest was staged Thursday morning outside the home of Defense Minister Benny Gantz by settlement mayors and other municipal leaders to protest against the recent spate of violent mostly peaceful Paleostinian attacks in the West Bank.

"The current security policies are endangering us," said chairman of the Benjamin Regional Council Yisrael Gantz.

"You chose to tolerate stone-throwing against our women and kiddies, you chose to be patient with Molotov cocktails at our expense. You showed weakness and ignited the region."

A series of Paleostinian attacks killed 19 people between mid-March and the beginning of May. This led the government to order the IDF to carry out an ongoing broad anti-terror campaign that has led to the death of 100 Paleostinians, including combatants and violent mostly peaceful demonstrators, and the arrest of 2,000 Paleostinians on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activity.

According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, there were 209 terror attacks in August, 172 of which took place in the West Bank.

IDF: No connection between army raid and death of 7-year-old Palestinian boy
[IsraelTimes] The IDF says it has concluded an investigation into the incidents surrounding the death of a 7-year-old Paleostinian boy during an army raid and found that there was no connection to the actions of the Israeli soldiers.

Rayan Suleiman died in disputed circumstances on September 29, after Israeli soldiers showed up at his home in the West Bank village of Tuqu’, south of Bethlehem. Relatives say troops who had been chasing stone throwers threatened his family, scaring the otherwise healthy child and causing his death.

The investigation finds that an officer questioned Suleiman’s father in the presence of two of his children at the door of their home, describing it as a "brief conversation conducted in a respectful manner, without any contact and certainly without the use of verbal or physical violence."

"During the departure of the troops from the village, a vehicle passed by them with the father of the family in it with a child on his lap, and the vehicle continued its journey without delay. After some time, the commander of the force saw an ambulance that entered the village and left it without any disturbance," the IDF says.

The statement notes that "during the entire time that the force was in the village, no force or weapons of any kind were used at all (no live fire or riot dispersal means.)"

It also says there was no evidence that the boy fell or was hurt as a result of the force’s actions.

"According to the conclusions of the investigation, any connection between the unfortunate death of the boy Rayan Suleiman and the actions of the force is ruled out," the statement says. "The soldiers acted as expected of them while adhering to IDF values."

Palestinian nabbed for attempted shooting attack, placing bomb at gas station
[IsraelTimes] Nablus resident Amad Asleem is one of several suspects arrested in the West Bank overnight as part of ongoing anti-terror campaign.

Israeli forces on Friday announced the arrest of a Paleostinian suspected of attempting to carry out a pair of attacks in the West Bank, including placing an bomb at a gas station.

According to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet security agency, Nablus resident Amad Asleem was detained in a joint operation overnight. He was later handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning.

The statement said Asleem, a resident of Nablus, was involved in shooting at an Israeli vehicle near Hawara on September 19.

No one was injured in the incident, with the suspect’s gun apparently jamming after he aimed it at the car. He then fled when the driver got out of the car and had gun sex.

The military and Shin Bet said Asleem was also suspected of leaving an explosive at a gas station near the entrance to the Kedumim settlement on September 25.

The explosive did not detonate and IDF sappers were called in to deal with the device.

In security camera footage of the incident, a suspect can be seen opening a car door and leaving a bag at the gas station, before the vehicle speeds off.

Asleem was one of five terror suspects arrested in overnight raids throughout the West Bank.

The IDF did not identify the other detainees but said it recovered knives, weapons parts and ammunition during the arrests, in which no Israeli troops were hurt.

Two Palestinian teens said killed in West Bank clashes with IDF
[IsraelTimes] PA health ministry says boy, 15, was shot in head with live bullets; army says troops opened fire after he hurled Molotov cocktail at them near northern West Bank town of Qalqilya.

Two Paleostinian teens were killed in festivities with the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank on Friday, the Paleostinian Health Ministry said.

A 15-year-old Paleostinian was rubbed out during festivities that broke out during a weekly northern West Bank protest against the expropriation of land for Israeli settlements.

The IDF said its troops opened fire after the boy hurled a Molotov cocktail at troops stationed near the West Bank security fence surrounding the Paleostinian town of Qalqilya.

The teen was later identified as Adel Daoud, a resident of Qalqilya. Over a dozen other Paleostinians were maimed in the festivities, Arabic media reported. The IDF said none of its troops were maimed.

Paleostinians from the nearby town of Kafr Qaddum have for years been holding near-weekly protests against Israel’s expropriation of land that had historically belonged to their town, but has since become part of the borders of the nearby settlement of Kedumim.

Israel often cites security concerns in justifying such moves, saying they help separate Israeli and Paleostinian populations in the West Bank, while Paleostinians say it is part of a policy to slowly eat away at their land and harm farmers who rely on the agricultural lands in order to make a living.

In a second incident, 17-year-old Mahdi Ladadweh, was reported shot and killed during festivities in a village northwest of Ramallah. The army had no immediate comment on the incident.

The Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy said 50 Paleostinians were maimed in festivities in the village of Al Mazraa al-Gharbiya near Ramallah, as the Israeli army fired live rounds, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. Crowds of Paleostinians gathered outside the Ramallah hospital where Ladadweh was pronounced dead, chanting against Israel.

Paleostinian media quoted residents saying that the festivities with Israeli security forces erupted as dozens of Paleostinians in Al Mazraa al-Gharbiya came out to protest incursions and attacks on the village by Israeli settlers.

Friday’s festivities unfolded during a months-long period of raised tensions in the West Bank.

Hours earlier, the IDF announced the arrest of a Paleostinian suspected of attempting to carry out a pair of attacks in the territory, including placing an bomb at a gas station.

The Nablus resident was one of five terror suspects arrested in overnight raids throughout the West Bank.

The IDF and police have been on heightened alert since last week amid the Jewish holiday season, with tensions already high due to an Israeli anti-terror offensive that has seen over 100 Paleostinians killed and more than 2,000 arrested in nightly raids in the West Bank.

Teen's mother disputes Iran, says she died of blows to head
[ALAHRAM] The mother of a 16-year-old Iranian girl has disputed official claims that her daughter fell to her death from a high building, saying the teen was killed by blows to the head as part of the crackdown on anti-hijab protests roiling the country.

Nasreen Shakarami also said authorities kept her daughter Nika's death a secret for nine days and then snatched the body from a morgue to bury her in a remote area, against the family's wishes.

The bereaved mother spoke in a video message Thursday to Radio Farda, the Persian-language arm of the U.S.-funded station Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Nika Shakarami has become the latest icon of the protests, seen as the gravest threat to Iran's ruling elites in years. Attempts by authorities in recent days to portray the teen's death as an accident could signal concern that the incident could further fuel anger against the government.

The protests, which enter their fourth week Saturday, were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police. They had detained Amini for alleged violations of the country's strict Islamic dress code.

Young women have often been leading the protests, tearing off and defiantly waving their headscarves as they call for toppling the government.

The protests quickly spread to communities across Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
and have been met by a harsh government crackdown, including beatings, arrests and killings of demonstrators, as well as internet disruptions.

Human rights groups estimate that dozens of protesters have been killed over the past three weeks. On Thursday, the London-based group Amnesia Amnesty International published its findings about what appears to be the single deadliest incident so far _ in the city of Zahedan on Sept. 30.

The report said Iranian security forces killed at least 66 people, including children, and maimed hundreds, after firing live rounds at protesters, bystanders and worshippers in a violent mostly peaceful crackdown that day.

Iranian authorities claimed the Zahedan violence involved unnamed separatists. More than a dozen people have been killed since then in the area, the report said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, bullets whapped! around Butch as he tried to tie his scarf around his shoulder as a tourniquet......
Nika Shakarami's mother pushed back against attempts by officials to frame her daughter's death as an accident.

In her video message, she said that the forensics report showed that Nika had died from repeated blows to the head.

Nika's body was intact, but some of her teeth, bones in her face and part of the back of her skull were broken, she said. ``The damage was to her head,'' she said. ``Her body was intact, arms and legs.''

Earlier this week, Iran's police chief, Gen. Hossein Ashtari, claimed that the teen had gone to a building ``and fell from the upper floor at a time of gatherings.'' He said that ``the fall from that height led to her death.''

Nasreen Shakarami said her daughter left her home in Tehran in the afternoon of Sept. 19 to join anti-hijab protests. She said she was in touch by phone with Nika several times in the next few hours, pleading with her to come home.

They last spoke before midnight. ``Then Nika's mobile was off, after she and her friends were shouting names of forces while they were fleeing,'' she said.

The following morning, the family searched for Nika at cop shoppes and prisons, but had no word of her whereabouts for nine days. Authorities finally handed over the body on the 10th day and the family headed to the city of Khoramabad for burial, she said. Authorities repeatedly demanded to take possession of the body, which was in the meantime stored in the Khoramabad morgue.

On the day of the planned funeral the family learned that the body had been snatched from the morgue and was taken to a remote village for burial, under heavy security, Nasreen Shakarami said.

Since the confirmation of her death, Nika has emerged as another icon of the protests, alongside Amini. A photo of Nika, wearing a black T-shirt and sporting a stylish two-tone bob haircut and eyeliner, has been widely circulated on social media.

US airstrike kills two more senior ISIS officials in Syria: CENTCOM
[Rudaw] The United States announced late Thursday it had killed two bigwigs of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in Syria, on the same day that American forces eliminated another prominent ISIS official in the country.

"U.S. forces conducted a successful airstrike in northern Syria, killing both Abu-Hashum al-Umawi, a deputy Wali of Syria, and another senior ISIS official associated with him," the American military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

CENTCOM added that the operation did not cause any civilian casualties and its forces conducted the task unscathed.

"This strike will degrade ISIS’ ability to destabilize the region and strike at our forces and partners," General Michael "Erik" Kurilla, the CENTCOM commander, said about the operation. "Our forces remain in the region to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS."

US forces earlier in the day carried out a raid in a part of northeast Syria (Rojava) controlled by the Syrian government south of the Kurdish-held city of Qamishli, killing an ISIS official and wounding two of his associates.

CENTCOM later confirmed on Twitter that the raid had taken down "Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri, an ISIS official known to facilitate the smuggling of weapons and fighters to support ISIS operations."

"During the operation, the targeted individual was killed and one of his associates was maimed. Two additional associates were detained by U.S. forces," the statement added.

The two operations are the latest in a series of US attacks against senior ISIS officials, with the terror group continuing to pose a serious threat to Syria and Iraq despite being territorially defeated.

A July dronezap by American forces in the country’s northwest killed Maher al-Agal, the leader of ISIS in Syria, five months after a secret US operation took down the terror group’s top leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi again in northwest Syria’s Idlib, a region largely controlled by rebel groups backed by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
