It appears to have worked for Burma. Why not relocate your capital and all important ministries to new city in the middle of nowhere where there no existing loyalties but those created out of whole cloth by the regime?

There are some pretty remarkable places in and around Tehran; it would be better if they moved the targets somewhere we wouldn't have to cause collateral damage.
Mahmoud Vahidnia, a distinguished mathematics whiz from the Sharif Technical University, frankly criticized the supreme leader during his meeting with students, as state-run media outlets were unable to censor the remarks. This international mathematics Olympiad winner blasted Khamenei in person in an unexpected move, focusing on supreme leaders performance and the lack of criticism against supreme leader.
In addition to criticizing Khamenei personally and the office of the supreme leader, this student also criticized the state radio and televisions biased coverage of issues and the polices brutal crackdown of people protesting against the election results.
Ayatollah Khamenei was forced to respond to the students criticism, but according to several eye-witness sources, the supreme leader was so distraught by the students remarks that he cancelled the usual prayer session and left the meeting early. Responding to Vahidnias frank criticism, Khamenei said that criticizing him is not illegal. However, he used harsh remarks to condemn the claim of election fraud as a crime, adding that he himself has criticisms against the state radio and televisions performance, one of which is directed at the organizations failure to set aside enough coverage for the administrations positive achievements.
Speaking to the website Alef, Vahidnia revealed further details about his conversation with the Islamic Republic supreme leader. He said that officials first barred him from speaking, but he was able to speak with the supreme leaders agreement. He said that he was interrupted several times during his remarks by the events host for being out of time.
Vahidnia noted, The things I said at the meeting were completely my personal beliefs. I didnt coordinate with anyone and no one knew that I wanted to speak. Even my family was unaware of it.
He also asked the supreme leader for an actual response to his criticisms.

Sounds like the host's "out of time" statements might have been referring to how long the math whiz had to remain breathing. The Chicago Way!, brought to you via Tehran.

Whiskey Mike,
I also have been struck by how Obama's tolerance of dissent is so similar to the Iranian regime's.
I hope they are not exchanging pointers.

[Jakarta Post] Iranian authorities have closed down a business newspaper known for being critical of the government. The Iranian state news agency on Monday said the Culture Ministry ordered the newspaper closed because its content strayed from the business field.
The Sarmayeh newspaper was known for articles critical of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's economic policies, which they say have impoverished the country.
A number of reformist newspapers and magazines have been closed down following the June's disputed presidential elections in which Ahmadinejad was reelected. Many journalists were also sent to jail on the charge of fomenting post-election unrests.
Since 2000 more than 100 newspapers and periodicals were banned in Iran, mostly on security charges.

The US military has finished erecting an advanced radar system in Iraq to monitor the border with Iran, Syria and Turkey, a report says. The radar system will monitor aircraft and anti-air targets approaching from the borders, several Arabic language news websites reported on Monday, citing comments by unnamed Isareli sources.
Thus freeing up the spy satellites to look in other places.
The report posted on the Palestinian Maannews website said that the system would transmit information to the Iraqi air force and some of its radar would be connected to the control tower at the Baghdad International Airport.
According to the sources, the radar is a preparatory measure aimed at providing the United States and its allies advanced control capabilities in event of a US military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
The Israeli sources claimed that the system would allow US forces to monitor Iranian military activities that may be targeting Tel Aviv or Turkey.
The idea of Iran attacking its northerly neighbor, Turkey, seems absurd as the two countries enjoy close ties, especially as Ankara has recently been showing increasing aversion toward Tel Aviv. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Iran last week was described by analysts as the start of a new chapter of strong relations between the two states.
When it comes to Israel however, Iran has repeatedly clarified that it would not be the initiator of a new military venture in the region. It has, however, vowed to give crushing response to any form of foreign aggression.
Meanwhile, hawkish Israel politicians and their counterparts in Washington have kept up their war rhetoric against Iran with repeated threats to bomb the country's nuclear installations.

Radar is so 20th Century. Likely the US has NSA and half a dozen other intelligence agencies long since setting up listening posts all along both the Iraq and Afghan borders.
[Iran Press TV Latest] Iranian security forces say they have twice foiled a plot, masterminded by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to assassinate a top Iranian official.
"Based on the confiscated evidence and documents, mercenary terrorists had planned to, with the support of the CIA and its scheme, assassinate a political official within the establishment," read a statement by the Intelligence Ministry on Monday.
The plan, aimed at creating chaos in line with the unrest and riots that sparked following the presidential election in June, was thwarted through following up on intelligence, the statement added.
Although the details of the terror plan was not revealed, the ministry said the terrorists had failed to eliminate the unnamed official when the Parliament (Majlis) was approving President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's ministers for his new term.
The official, then was to be targeted for the second time as Iran prepared for the anniversary of the US Embassy takeover in Tehran on November 4, dubbed the national day of fighting global arrogance, the ministry said.

Sure, it's PressTV, but the fact that the target is still alive does lend credence to the idea that the CIA was behind it.

These guys seemed to have dialed up the paranoia. They're talking of moving their capitol, the daily uncovering of yet another "plot from the West," shutting down critical newspapers, etc. Are they seriously scared stupid or are they getting all wobbly on their continued rule?
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards warned the moderate opposition on Monday not to stage any rallies on Nov. 4, when the Islamic Republic marks the 30th anniversary of the seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran.
Opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, who says the June election that he lost to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was rigged, appeared to urge his supporters two days ago to take part in rallies on that day.
Referring to the Iranian date of the capturing of the U.S. embassy three decades ago, Mousavi said: "The 13th of Aban is a... rendezvous so we would remember anew that among us it is the people who are the leaders."
Several reformist websites are urging opposition supporters to gather on Wednesday and protest "peacefully" and not to resort to "violence even if they are attacked."
In mid-September, reformist supporters clashed with police and government backers at annual demonstrations in support of the Palestinians. Some reformist websites have called for renewed demonstrations on Wednesday.
The Guards, who helped to quell huge street protests after the election, called on the Iranian people to "exercise vigilance in regard to the likelihood of mischief and plots by the enemy's agents and some unaware and misguided (people) on Nov. 4", the official IRNA news agency reported.
"The Iranian nation will not allow any (political) group to impose itself and use diversionary and false slogans on Wednesday," it quoted a Guards statement as saying.
