Capitalism is the cause of the global economic recession and an Islamic banking system is the only way to revive battered world economies, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday.
Addressing a one-day meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), Ahmadinejad said investment based on interests was usury, which "is entrenched in the capitalist system... and is perhaps the main reason why the system has gone bankrupt". "It is a way of accumulating capital without working. Usury, according to the holy Quran, is [tantamount to] fighting with Allah," said Ahmadinejad. Islamic banks operate on sharia law, which bans such investments. The banks instead make money using a system of profit-sharing from returns on approved investments. Islamic banks exist in all oil-rich Arab Gulf countries and in most Islamic states. Ahmadinejad did not mention Iran's struggling economy, nor did he refer to its dispute with the West over its nuclear activities. Somalia's President Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed also slammed the "wrongdoing and mistakes and absence of transparency" of international financial institutions in the crisis. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev of Kyrgyzstan said he intended to turn his country into "a regional centre for the expansion of Islamic financing".
The $1 trillion Islamic finance faced difficulties during the global financial crisis but was relatively insulated because of Islam's ban on handling interest-bearing financial instruments.Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan also attended. Turkish President Abdullah Gul spoke on behalf of the developing nations in the OIC, despite the fact that Turkey has a western-style banking system.

What does he think is so great about the Islamic banking system?
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran charged on Monday three detained American citizens with espionage, the official IRNA news agency quoted a judiciary official as saying, while U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said there was "no evidence" for Tehran to charge its citizens.
The three were held after they strayed into Iran from northern Iraq at the end of July.
"We believe strongly that there is no evidence to support any charge whatsoever," Clinton said on a visit to Berlin on Monday.
The three, Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, crossed into Iran from Iraq and their families say they strayed across the border accidentally.
"The three are charged with espionage. Investigations continue into the three detained Americans in Iran," Tehran general prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told IRNA.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggested in an interview with the American television network NBC in September that the Americans' release might be linked to the release of Iranian diplomats he said were being held by U.S. troops in Iraq.

The hikers knew the risks. The Iranians are hoping to get something for this that is worth way more than three idiots' lives. Once again, people who don't get it threaten to put the whole process at risk, possibly sowing misery for years to come. And then they get to write a book about it.
IIRC, he's fluent in dialectal arabic, and a full resident of syria (gone native? See his articles tone, you can see to which side he's more inclined to, plus, if sarah is his squeeze, he must be at least nominally a convert), he's done investigative journalism stints in iraq, darfour,...
So it's not like he's an innocent, wide-eyed "kid" caught hiking cluelessly, more likely, a seasoned journalist, who got snabbed while trying to sneak over there, knowing fully what he was doing.

Hikers? That's a cover story if I ever heard one. They got sent in and then betrayed most likely. Only need to find if they were handed over by traitors or by electronic eavesdropping.

Is there really any need for those to be sent by someone? Bauer is a freelance journalist & photograph, most likely, he was on a story about iranian kurds and/or rebels or something like that, which would be somehow ironical if he's used as a pawn by iran, since his sympathies seem to lay more against the USA in the first place.
Iranian police are ready to enforce sharia punishment law, such as amputating hands, because a failure to carry out these punishments had led to an increase of crimes, the Ebtekar newspaper reported on Monday.
Under Iran's sharia law, repeat offenders face amputation of their fingers for theft, but sentences are seldom carried out, especially in public. In recent years, such sharia sentences have rarely been reported.
"Not carrying the sharia punishment law, particularly its most important part that is hand amputation, spreads insecurity in Iran," said Asghar Jafari, head of Iran's criminal police, Ebtekar reported. "Police are ready to carry out hand amputation of convicted criminals," he said. The UN and rights activists have in the past criticised Iran for such amputations. Iran dismisses the criticism, saying the sentences are part of sharia.

Time to get a handsfree device for my phone. Any recommendations?
[Iran Press TV Latest] Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has announced a new government of national unity after more than four months of negations with opposition leaders.
Hariri announced the 30-member cabinet that includes 15 ministers from his "March 14" bloc and 10 from the opposition parties, AFP reported.
"Finally, a government of national unity is born," Hariri told reporters after the decree was made public on Monday.
The remaining five ministers were appointed by President Michel Sleiman, including the holders of the key interior and defense portfolios.
"This cabinet will either be a chance for Lebanon to renew trust in its institutions, or it will be a stage where Lebanese will repeat their failure in achieving agreement," the premier added.
The Hezbollah resistance movement has also two ministers in the new cabine

Today we are facing a new farce from the Muslim Brotherhood after it announced its new position which -- as usual -- justifies everything that serves the Iranian project in our region. The General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mahdi Akef, issued what he described as a "call" to Saudi Arabia to stop fighting against the Huthis. Akef said that Saudi Arabia has a right to defend its territory "but" the role of Saudi Arabia, and that of its King "is much greater than this."
We do not know what can be considered a greater role than protecting Saudi Arabia and its sovereignty, maintaining [national] security and protecting [Saudi] citizens?
Therefore we believe that the Muslim Brotherhood's position towards the Huthi aggression on Saudi soil is nothing more than a continuation of the movement's positions that aim to weaken and destabilize Arab countries for the sake of extremist groups that Iran funds and supports with information and weaponry as part of their attempt to destabilize the security of our nations.
It would have been better if the General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood had supported Saudi Arabia and its position without adding a "but" because what Riyadh is doing -- particularly along the Saudi-Yemeni border -- is vitally important. Riyadh is protecting its security from arms and drug smugglers, Al Qaeda elements, as well as the Huthis. This is something that calls for supporting Saudi Arabia, rather than criticism or second-guessing.
However are we surprised by the Muslim Brotherhood's position?
Of course not, for the adoption of positions calling for sedition is not something new, and we saw this during Saddam Hussein's occupation of Kuwait, as well as when Hamas marched on the Egyptian border. We have seen the Muslim Brotherhood take up this position when Hezbollah attempted to tamper with Egyptian security. The Muslim Brotherhood also adopted this same biased position following the armed coup in Lebanon carried out by the Iranian affiliated Hezbollah movement which also saw Hezbollah targeting Sunni areas of Beirut. The Muslim Brotherhood also contributed to the Sunni -- Shiite reconciliation drama following this Hezbollah coup, the goal of this was to whitewash the Hezbollah movement, and distance it from the criticism that it received after it exposed its sectarian features to Lebanon.
Where were the Muslim Brotherhood and their General Guide when the Huthis were starting this military and media conflict, tampering with Saudi security, targeting Saudi border guards, and infiltrating the Saudi interior?
We did not hear any denouncements from the Muslim Brotherhood against what the Huthis were and are continuing to do along the Saudi -- Yemeni border. In fact the only thing that we can recall is that Muslim Brotherhood leaders appeared in the Iranian media praising Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on his wisdom and his call for Muslim unity, whilst at the same time the Supreme Leader and [Iranian president] Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were threatening Saudi Arabia over this year's Hajj season.
The Muslim Brotherhood's "call" to Saudi Arabia is new evidence of the threat that this organization represents, and the threat of their projects, which does not include protecting our countries from Iranian tampering. The Muslim Brotherhood's position is also evidence of the extent of the alliance between them and the Iranian regime, and their role is now to confuse public opinion by issuing misleading statements. This is not surprising for somebody who said "to hell" with Egypt, therefore the Muslim Brotherhood are- deservedly -- the brothers of Iran.
