--Tech & Moderator Notes
500,000 posts
A total of 500,000 posts have been put up in Rantburg, com since September 11th, 2001.

That is a lot of work by just one individual, Fred Pruitt, with help from moderators past and present, and from regular readers.

Rantburg.com wasn't looking so good just a few months ago, but since then there have been improvements in technology. We have improved the backup site to the point where it can function stand alone.

We didn't say anything then, but our last attack turned out to be an SQL injection attack, which Fred's coding helped to catch before it could do any damage.

And of course there's always the emergency Wheelus Machine Shop break room.

All this isn't gloating. It's just facts.

Volodya Putin has injected a sort of new life into Rantburg.com, making us working as moderators busier than a one armed paper hanger. And the reaction from some quarters has been a sight to see.

And that's a good thing.

But still we need help in celebrating 500,000 articles, help in keeping this blog we have alive and kicking.

#13  Other web sites present the news without all the bullcrap that comes from MSM. Other web sites let people comment about the articles like Rantburg. But the mods and commenters on Rantburg seem so much more informative and entertaining than any other site I've found.

Then there's the War on Terror which has sort of gone into the background for America but has never really gone away. Nobody covers it like Rantburg.

Now we have the war in Ukraine. Nobody presents and allows all the debate, the differing opinions, facts and histories about this war like Rantburg. Special acknowledgement to badanov who gathers and presents a great deal of information and takes considerable heat just because he tries to be even handed about it.

I can't go back to being ignorant of the things I learn here. It might be easier for me. It might make it easier for me to get along with some of the people around me. But I can't do it. I think it'd be like getting a lobotomy.

Hat Tip to Fred Pruitt, a true American patriot, and all the mods.

Afghanistan
IEA claims militants involved in Daikundi clash, and no children killed
[ArianaNews] The Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), says nine murderous Moslems were killed on Thursday at a house in Siyuk area of Shibar district of Daikundi province.

According to IEA officials, one Islamic Emirate soldier was also killed in the clash and two others were maimed. A woman who was in the house at the time was caught in crossfire and maimed in the leg.

Bilal Karimi, the deputy front man of the Islamic Emirate, said despite repeated attempts to get the murderous Moslems to lay down their weapons they failed to do so. As a result, IEA security forces entered the house.

Karimi said all the murderous Moslems killed had been armed.

According to Karimi, reports of children being killed and other damage incurred are not true.

Latif Nazari, Deputy Minister of Economy, said on Twitter that some elements have emerged that are trying to pit Hazara
...a grouping of Dari-speaking people of Sino-Tibetan descent inhabiting Afghanistan and Pakistain. They are predominantly Shia Moslems and not particularly warlike, which makes them favored targets...
s against the IEA.

He tweeted that: "Hazaras are too alert to fall into their trap and their external stimuli. Interaction between the people and the emirate will continue."

We are waiting for further information but advise at-risk Afghans who plan to use the crossing to call ahead and find out if the security situation is resolved.

  • POLICE IN BALKH CLAIM TO HAVE KILLED WELL-KNOWN ROBBER – A police spokesman in Mazar-i-Sharif announced that the bandit, Ihsan, who has long plagued the Province was killed in a standoff in northern Balkh on Sunday. Militants attack hotel used by government officials in Mogadishu UPDATE: still fighting as of noon, at least 10 said dead UPDATE 2: It’s over. 15 dead incl 6 Al Shaboobies
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Somali security forces were attempting to flush out armed assailants from a hotel in the Somali capital, a police front man said Sunday, after the turban group al-Shabaab

grabbed credit for the attack. There has been no immediate word of any casualties.

Al-Shabaab said in a broadcast on its own radio frequency Sunday that said its fighters attacked the hotel Villa Rose, which has a restaurant popular with government and security officials.

Scores of people were rescued from the hotel and security forces have launched an operation to remove the assailants, police front man Sadik Dodishe told state media.

Abdi Hassan, a government worker who lives near the hotel, told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he believes several government officials were inside the hotel when the attack started. Some were seen jumping the perimeter wall to safety while others were rescued, he said.

The hotel isn't far from the presidential palace in central Mogadishu, where a blast was heard, followed by gunfire.

Such holy warrior attacks are common in Mogadishu and other parts of the Horn of Africa nation.

The latest attack comes amid a new, high-profile offensive by the Somali government against al-Shabaab, which still controls large parts of central and southern Somalia.

Extremist fighters loyal to the group have responded by killing prominent clan leaders in an apparent effort to dissuade support for the government offensive, and attacks on public places frequented by government officials and others persist.

Hotels and restaurants are frequently targeted, as are military bases for government troops and foreign peacekeepers.

Last month at least 120 people were killed in two boom-mobileings at a busy junction in Mogadishu. al-Shabaab, which doesn't usually claim responsibility when its assaults result in a high civilian corpse count, carried out that attack, the deadliest since a similar attack at the same spot killed more than 500 five years ago.

Al-Shabaab opposes Somalia's federal government, which is backed by African Union

peacekeepers, and seeks to take power and enforce a strict version of Sharia law.

The United States has described al-Shabaab as one of al-Qaeda's deadliest organizations and targeted it with scores of Arclight airstrike

Update from Garowe at 11:00 a.m ET, posted at 12:22 p.m. Somalia local time:
Somalia: Parliament session cancelled over Al-Shabaab attack

The Senate and House of Representatives in Somalia have cancelled a joint session scheduled for today [Monday] following the Al-Shabaab raid in Villa Rosa Hotel, a popular eatery in Mogadishu which is frequented by government officials and other VIP guests.

The hotel under the Al-Shabaab attack is situated not far away from Villa Somalia, the official office and residence of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Al-Shabaab militants are still holed up in the hotel with preliminary reports indicating that over 10 people have been killed and several others critically injured. The elite Danab Special Forces are on the scene and are trying to get hold of the militants who are firing from one of the floors.

Monday's session was meant to discuss the 2023 budget, which was approved by the cabinet last week after thorough scrutiny. The $967.7 million budget is set to expand the country's development activities besides helping with recurrent expenses including payment of salaries and operations.

Among those injured in the attack were Somalia's federal Minister of Security Mohamed Ahmed Doodishe, Abdullahi Bashir, a former official at the Ministry of Finance and the State Minister for environment Aw Hirsi, a common figure in the recently concluded climate change summit in Egypt.

The government has also announced plans to invest more in the security sector to enable the Somalia National Army to expand its territory by flushing out the Al-Shabaab militants. The government is also partnering with the international community to help in curbing sources of revenue for the group.

At least 20 men from Pakistan and Iran were arrested in Hobyo

Garowe adds:
Police in Somalia's central Federal State of Galmudug
...a semiautonomous region in central Somalia, bordering Puntland on the north. Galmudug is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation, but rather considers itself autonomous within the larger Somali federalism, for what that's worth...
arrested foreigners said to be Iranians and Paks and launched an investigation into their presence in the country without complying with various immigration regulations.

Authorities have confirmed that 20 Paks and Iranians were arrested in the coastal Hobyo town in Somalia, and have since claimed that they were under al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
captivity. There was no immediate proof that the individuals have been under al-Shabaab.

In a preliminary statement, the men said they were fishermen previously captured by al-Shabaab in Somali waters but authorities in the country could not immediately ascertain the claims. The al-Shabaab turbans are notorious for kidnapping foreign nationals in exchange for ransom.

Their arrest comes at the time the country is fighting al-Shabaab turbans across the nation, in a crackdown that has left over 500 turbans dead according to Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. The government has been pursuing foreign nationals who are reportedly supporting the fighters.

In the past, authorities have confirmed with evidence that the group has recruited foreign nationals who are fighting in the country. These nationals are said to have undergone immense training which enables them to fight within and outside Somalia.

One of the major mysteries the government will try to unravel is whether the claims of the turbans can be proved. The group has been abducting people in Somali waters and across the borders, a situation they use to ask for ransoms and other financial favors for their own facilitation.

But there are instances where foreign nationals have been fighting alongside al-Shabaab, with the most recent example being in the Manda Bay attack in Kenya. In a report, the group confirmed that of all the five turbans who were killed after they raided a US naval base, four of them were not Somalis.

To extend their dominance, the turbans have been eyeing neighboring countries especially Kenya for recruitment, making the war against these criminals complicated. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
police insist they will interrogate them, holy warriors, before making a comprehensive report that would lead to the acquittal or conviction of the 20 foreigners.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Muslim Unity activist in Azerbaijan accused of drug trafficking
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The detained member of the movement "Muslim Unity" (DME) Shahin Gadirov was charged with involvement in drug trafficking on a large scale. By a court decision, a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months was chosen against him. The DME considers the case fabricated and a provocation against the organization.

As the "Caucasian Knot" reported, Shahin Gadirov was detained on the evening of November 23 in Baku when he was leaving work.

Gadirov was detained on November 23 at a bus stop when he was returning home from work, Abulfaz Bunyadov, press secretary of the DME, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

“Only on November 26, members of his family clarified the fate of Shahin. It turned out that he was being held at the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GUBOP) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was charged under Art. 234.3.4. Azerbaijan Criminal Code (Illegal manufacturing, production, purchase, storage, transportation, shipment or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their precursors, on a large scale),” Bunyadov said.

By the decision of the Narimanov District Court, a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for a period of four months was chosen against Gadirov.

Bunyadov noted that so far Gadirov does not have a lawyer of his choice.

"Shahin Gadirov is a believer, he is far from drugs. If he were a drug dealer, he wouldn't have to do all sorts of hard daily physical work to support his family. Obviously, the accusation is false," Bunyadov said.

He noted that the DME considers the criminal case against Gadirov fabricated and regards his arrest as a provocation and pressure on the organization.

"Shahin Gadirov became the tenth member of the Muslim Unity currently held in prison, including the organization's leader Taleh Bagirzade," Bunyadov said.

On January 25, 2017, the leader of the Muslim Unity movement,
...in our archives as the unregistered Movement for Muslim Unity, they describe themselves as a peaceful Shiite Islamic socio-political movement that calls for democratic reform and religious liberties [for Shiites]...
Taleh Bagirzade,
...a prominent Azerbaijani Shiite theologian, in his youth he studied theology in Iran, then came home to found the so-called Muslim Unity movement, which can be translated as Al Tawheed. He was sentenced to 20 years for murder, terrorism, organization of mass riots, illegal possession of weapons, and attempted forcible seizure of power. Authorities accused him and the Muslim Unity Movement of planning an armed insurrection against the state, claiming they’d thrown Molotov cocktails and opened fire on the police officers during the 2017 raid...
and 17 of his supporters were sentenced to terms of 10 to 20 years on charges of organizing riots after a security operation in November 2015, which resulted in the death of seven people, including two policemen, says the reference of the "Caucasian Knot" "Nardaran". The defendants complained of being tortured. They pleaded not guilty. Azerbaijani human rights activists recognized the defendants in the Nardaran case as political prisoners. Subsequently, some of the convicts were released on pardon and the end of their term.

Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were not available for comment.

The Narimanov District Court confirmed the information about Gadirov's arrest.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
2 convicted in brutal beating of off-duty soldier in Jaffa during May 2021 unrest
[IsraelTimes] Mohammed Ayiash found guilty of incitement to terror and violence, Wali Misri of aggravated assault; victim underwent intense rehab for wounds

Two Arab Israelis were convicted by the Tel Aviv District Court on Sunday as part of a plea deal after they admitted taking part in the beating of an off-duty soldier in Jaffa during nationwide unrest in May 2021.

Mohammed Ayiash, 23, was convicted of incitement to terror and violence in the case. Prosecutors will seek a sentence of 22 months in prison, a suspended sentence and a fine. Ali Misri, 20, was convicted of aggravated assault. Prosecutors will seek a five-year prison sentence, a fine, and compensation for the maimed soldier.

Leon Shranin, 19 at the time, was left at death's door after he was beaten on May 13, during a wave of unrest in mixed Jewish-Arab communities. The attackers were only deterred after passersby intervened and called rescue services.

Shranin suffered a skull fracture and a cerebral hemorrhage, Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv said, and required lengthy rehabilitation for his injuries.

According to the indictment, Ayiash called on members of a WhatsApp group, "Breaking News Jaffa Arabic," to come to Jaffa’s Jerusalem Boulevard on the day of the attack. Others in the group encouraged each another to bring weapons such as explosives and gas canisters.

Misri spotted Shranin on the street and was part of the mob that attacked him, the indictment said. Ayiash was present at the scene afterward, when he recorded a video of the unconscious soldier and uploaded it later to the WhatsApp group.

"He’s finished, here it’s after he got beaten, and he’s finished, he can’t move," Ayiash said in the footage.

Three others were originally suspected of participating in the assault, but charges against them were eventually dropped.

The attack on Shranin came during a period of unrest in May 2021 that saw the worst violence between Jewish and Arab communities in decades. Amid intense fighting with Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
and tensions in Jerusalem, Israel’s ethnically mixed Jewish and Arab communities erupted in mob violence, which police failed to contain.

In the weeks after the violence simmered down, police followed up with a major operation to apprehend suspects for involvement in the violence that led to the arrest of over 1,550 people, the majority of them Arab Israelis. More than 150 indictments have been filed.

Iran arrests Khamenei niece after condemning regime, arrested rapper faces death penalty, Qom bank mgr fired for serving bareheaded woman
[AlAhram] Iranian authorities have arrested the niece of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
after she recorded a video describing the authorities led by her uncle as a "murderous and child-killing regime".

Farideh Moradkhani comes from a branch of the family that has a record of opposition to Iran's holy manal leadership and has herself been tossed in the calaboose

previously in the country.

Her brother Mahmoud Moradkhani wrote on Twitter that she was arrested on Wednesday after going to the office of the prosecutor following a summons.

Then on Saturday, her brother posted a video on YouTube, with the link shared on Twitter, where she condemned the "clear and obvious oppression" Iranians have been subjected to, and criticized the international community's inaction.

"Free people, be with us! Tell your governments to stop supporting this murderous and child-killing regime," she said.

"This regime is not loyal to any of its religious principles and does not know any law or rule except force and maintaining its power in any way possible."

It was not clear when the video had been recorded.

She complained that the sanctions imposed against the regime over its crackdown were "laughable" and said Iranians had been left "alone" in their fight for freedom.

Moradkhani is the daughter of Khamenei's sister Badri who fell out with her family in the 1980s and fled to Iraq at the peak of the war with Iran's neighbour. She joined her husband, the dissident holy man Ali Tehrani who was born Ali Moradkhani Arangeh.

She has gained prominence as an anti-death penalty
activist muppet and was last arrested in January this year.

That arrest came after an October 2021 video conference in which she lavishly praised Farah Diba, the widow of shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who was ousted by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said she had then been released on bail in April and her arrest last Wednesday was to begin serving an existing 15-year sentence.

The charges were not immediately clear.

According to the United Nations
