On November 4, 2008, Islamist forums posted a 39-minute video produced by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, titled "War of Bombs and Landmines." The video features mainly images of past attacks against Algerian security forces, as well as images allegedly reflecting the economic situation in some North African countries; it includes very little by way of substantial claims and threats.
The video addresses two main themes: the West's growing involvement in North Africa, and what is described as "the government's policy of starving its citizens." The video ends with a threat to strike Western interests in North Africa, particularly in Algeria.

Capital cases - where the death penalty is involved - are one instance where I think government aid is warranted for the defendants' legal expenses. Britain has stopped executing convicted criminals for capital crimes. Why is it continuing to pay for legal expense?

Sure we do. People who can't afford an attorney get one appointed for them in any criminal case. Might not be the world's best attorney but they get one. That's the way it should be.

I sat on a jury earlier this year and the defendent was represented by a court-appointed attorney. The lady was normally a divorce lawyer - I guess she was doing some pro bono work for the profession in this case. This defendent was very well represented. We convicted, but it sure wasn't because of her; she seriously outclassed the prosecuter (and the judge.)
(Kyodo)--North Korean media said Thursday the country's leader Kim Jong Il watched a music performance, reporting his public appearance for the second day in a row. The Korean Central News Agency said in a report dated Wednesday but moved early Thursday that Kim attended the event together with senior officials of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and the Korean People's Army.
There was no mention of the date or place of the event.
The report came a day after the country's media released a series of pictures of Kim inspecting two military units, and marked the fifth report of his public appearance since the surfacing in September of foreign reports that he may have suffered a stroke.
Performers from different national art troupes put on the event, Thursday's KCNA report said. "At the end of the performance he waved back to the cheering performers and audience and congratulated them on their successful presentation," KCNA said of the leader.
In the audience together with the leader were senior officials including Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam, secretaries of the ruling party's Central Committee, the KCNA report said. Jang Song Thaek, a department director at the party and Kim's brother- in-law, was also there, the news agency said.
Generals of the North Korean military Hyon Chol Hae and Ri Myong Su, who were also reported to have accompanied Kim in the inspection of military units, also attended, the report said.
Speculation surrounding Kim's health intensified after the leader stayed away from celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the country's founding on Sept. 9. North Korea has denied suggestions he has suffered a health setback.

Well obviously the EU is better at anti-terrorism, just look at the number of terrorist attacks in Europe since 2002 compared to the US...
To cut the EU security forces (which are actually rather good against muslim terror) some slack, one reasons believe the USA didn't get any major terror acts on their territory is that it made moer "sense" to fight the USA in iraq; that is, the fly paper theory which was probably more successful than what it was credited for, coupled with vigourous secret undertakings to disrupt networks, in africa or elsewhere.
The grunts went to die in iraq instead of going cause mahyem in the USA (where there is not that critical mass of muslims... yet, to nurture therrorism, as opposed to EUrope), and the brains were too busy not being caught and/or snuffed.
Though, the USA DID have several instant jihad terror attacks, as early as 2003 IIRC, with the fragging in kuweit, the most notable being the Washington snipers.

Obama is an Underlying Cause guy. (ie; Don't make Bin Laden a martyr comment.) Which is not completely different then the current Hearts and Minds crew in the Bush DoS. (And much of DoD) Biden on the other hand has proven throughout his career to the diplomatic flim-flam the Europeans absolutely love. Obamas innate arrogance could actually be beneficial in these regards. In other words, ask Joess advice and then do the opposite.

(AKI) - An asylum claim by the son of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, Omar Bin Laden, is expected to be rejected by the Spanish government, according to one of the country's major newspapers. El Pais, a national daily based in Madrid, quoted well-informed sources on Wednesday who said asylum was unlikely to be approved.
Omar asked Spain for asylum after he arrived in Madrid on a flight from Cairo on Monday. He was expected to be interviewed at length by government officials on Wednesday, said El Pais.
The Ministry of the Interior will then notify Omar of its decision within 72 hours. If his claim is rejected, Omar will have 24 hours to appeal the decision, and the ministry a further 48 hours to review it.
Seven months ago, Omar was refused entry to live in the United Kingdom with his British wife, Zaina al-Sabah.
Who, as somebody said recently, has probably seen more pricks then a secondhand dartboard.
Omar said he no longer feels safe in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, where he lives, nor in Saudi Arabia, his country of birth, reported El Pais. He is reportedly being held at Madrid's Barajas Airport where he has remained since his arrival.
If his claim is rejected, Omar could appeal to a Spanish court. He also has to prove that his life and physical integrity would suffer if he goes back to Saudi Arabia, his country of origin.

El Pais said in the past five years there has been no precedent of Saudi citizens asking or having been granted asylum in Spain, and granting it to Omar would imply that members of the Bin Laden family suffer persecution in Saudi Arabia.
The Bin Laden family is one of the wealthiest in the Kingdom, where they possess an impressive conglomerate including one of the largest construction firms and equity management.
Omar, 28, is one of 19 children of the Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

India is in an untenable position, surrounded by enemies - Bangladesh, Pakistan, and China, with Burma possibly being a surrogate for China. India needs to develop its own resources, get its people involved in general prosperity, and build a first-class military. It's going to have to fight a three- or four-front war the next time Pakistan decides to be adventurous. When they do, India needs to expel ALL its muslims into Pakistan, which would totally destroy that "nation"'s economy and culture. Sealing the border with Bangladesh would cause the collapse of that muslim mini-state, as Bangladesh has a hard time feeding its own people, and has no resources or major industry to maintain an economy.

A TEAM of police and prison doctors have examined the three Bali bombers in preparation for their executions as militants gathered at the home of two of them to warn against killing them. The medical checks are done to use as comparison with the autopsies after the executions and include blood pressure and heart checks.
What, if their blood pressure is too high they won't be executed?
In June, the medical checks were done on two Nigerian drug-traffickers two days before their execution.
Yesterday, all non-jail workers were ordered away from the island where the bombers will be shot, and small boats banned from the area.
A source inside Batu prison - where Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra are being held for their part in the October 2002 murders of 202 people, including 88 Australians - said they had refused to see prosecutors who came to show them documents late on Wednesday. The prosecutors, who are in charge of their executions, read a document to the three from outside.
Jailers were kept back and did not hear the contents or if it was in fact the 72-hour execution notice.
Wooden posts have now been erected at the death zone to which the bombers will be strapped when they face the firing squads.
In a statement from their lawyers, the men said their blood would "become the light for the faithful ones and burning hell fire for the infidels and hypocrites".
Hundreds of members of the radical Islamic Defenders Front arrived in Tenggulun yesterday to support the family and put on a show of force for the media. Shouting at the press, they walked from an Islamic school to the house of the bombers' mother Tariyem.
Carrying hand-written banners reading "America terrorist" and "If one hero dies 1000 will grow, if three die then one million will grow", they marched past villagers whose lives have been thrown into chaos by the spectacle.
The wife of Mukhlas, Farida, also arrived to pay her respects to his mother. As the mob arrived at the family home, a frail-looking Tariyem and her daughter Asfiyah emerged from their house to meet the militants and face the media.
While more slogans were shouted and speeches offering "moral" support repeated, the old woman managed to raise her fist twice in defiance in time with the mob.
Amri Hata, the head of the local prosecutor's office, visited Imam Samudra's house in Lopang Gede village in West Java's Serang area with the head of the Serang Ulema Council and Serang police chief amid heavy police guard. "We just informed the family if (the executions) happened, the family must be ready to accept," he said.
The families of the bombers say they have sent a letter to the president. "The execution of my brother is against the law and therefore a murder, and I will sue," said Lulu Jamaluddin, Imam Samudra's younger brother.
The bombers' lawyers have repeatedly said the Constitutional Court had struck down retroactive provisions in anti-terrorism laws, which were written in the wake of the 2002 attacks and used to convict them. However, authorities said the Constitutional Court's ruling did not apply to the Bali bombers.
Islamic extremists also rallied in Jakarta yesterday against the imminent execution as defence lawyers demanded the families be allowed a final visit. Chanting "God is great", some 100 militants descended on the offices of the national human rights body as the bombers' lawyers met officials inside to demand access for the families. "We don't know the contents of the letter. The families only told me that they hope the execution will be postponed until the president gives an answer to the letter," he said.

As long as there are people with that attitude, the non-Islamic world is going to have to be vigilant against Islamic extremism, and to take strong action against its practitioners. No one has the "right" to kill others, just because they don't sh$$ the same way they do. News station over here is awaiting confirmation that the Bali Bombers may have been executed about 5 minutes ago (fingers crossed)
A senior Iranian military official has warned the US forces stationed in Iraq against violating the Islamic Republic's airspace. "Some parts of the Iran-Iraq border are complex and US fighter jets and helicopters could make a misstep and violate Iran's airspace," Brig. Gen. Massoud Jazayeri, a senior official with the Armed Forces Headquarters said.
He was referring to a statement issued by the Iranian armed forces on Wednesday, which warned the US forces against violating the country's airspace. "If such a violation is made, the Iranian forces will confront the US airplanes, so issuing a warning was necessary so that the Americans would be careful," he stated.
He advised US airplanes to choose flight routes with a safe distance from the Iranian border.

A senior Iranian official has brushed aside the remarks made by a NATO official that Iran is incapable of blocking the Persian Gulf.
"We hope that neither the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf nor any other waterway would be blocked, but if the enemy attacks Iran and consequently it (the blockade) becomes necessary, the Islamic Republic of Iran can easily close the Strait of Hormuz," Brig. Gen. Massoud Jazayeri, a senior official at the Armed Forces Headquarters told Fars News Agency on Wednesday.
The commander of NATO's naval forces had earlier said that Iran's threats to close the strategic Persian Gulf waterway were a "fantasy".
During his visit to Kuwait this week, Vice Admiral Maurizio Gemignani said the international waterway could not be blocked.
About 40 percent of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

I expect to see a LOT of resignations from the military in the next few years. We'll probably get a lot in the next two months, as people who don't want their retirement papers signed by The One put them in to get out while Bush is still POTUS.
The military on the whole loved Bush. Pity the rest of the country isn't nearly as bright or honorable as they are.

Bill Clinton did not have military experience nor warmongering mindset either - but he was ok with deploying our forces into battle from time to time (we'll leave motive out of the discussion.) They may not have been the battles we would have selected and not fought as we would have fought, but it does leave room to hope that Pres-elect Hope&Change might not be a total surrendercrat. I think decision-making looks a whole lot different when you actually have to make the decisions. (I'm not optimistic about the next 12 years, just not quite totally pessimistic.)

The European Union (EU) has called upon the new US administration to rethink its war on terror strategy by taking Pakistan on board, Dawn News reported on Wednesday. Speaking at a EU gathering on the Middle East situation in Brussels, EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana said he hoped that the new US leadership would follow a policy of 'engagement and multilateralism'. "Without engaging Pakistan in an effective manner, it would be very difficult to resolve the issues in Afghanistan" he said.
