Afghanistan
Taliban shadow governor Haji Lala killed with his 43 fighter in Kandahar
Taliban shadow governor for southern Kandahar province has been killed along with his 43 fighters during an operation of the Afghan security forces.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said Hayat also famous as Haji Lala was killed during a special military raid of the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police forces.

A statement by MoI said his deputy identified as Ahmad Shah Hemat was also killed along with 43 fighters during the raid conducted in Kata Sang area of Shahwali Kot district.

The Afghan forces also confiscated some weapons and ammunition following the special military operation, MoI added.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.

The Afghan security forces have stepped up counter-terrorism operations across the country to suppress the insurgency activities of the group as the weather gets warm, resulting into more attacks by the insurgents of the group across the country.

This comes as the Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the group announced its spring offensive earlier this month but the security officials are saying that the offensive has been successfully repulsed and the group has suffered heavy loss.

Police defuse Taliban bomb planted in a graveyard in Ghazni city
The Afghan National Police (ANP) forces discovered and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in a graveyard in Ghazni city.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said “Today morning, Afghan National Police detected a remote controlled mine which was placed by enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan in a graveyard in the 2nd District of Ghazni City capital of Ghazni province.”

The statement further added “Afghan National Police detected a roadside bomb placed by enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan in Kashk village, Khowaja Omari District of Ghazni province, yesterday.”

The anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban insurgents have not commented regarding the report so far.

Taliban militants and insurgents belonging to the other militant groups frequently use Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the Afghan security forces.

However, the ordinary civilians are mostly targeted in roadside bombings. Meanwhile, it is yet not clear who was the target of the IED attack in Ghazni city graveyard.

This comes as a group of 9 Taliban insurgents were killed after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the fellow fighters of the group in northeastern Badakhshan province.

Key Taliban group member Qari Zubair killed in Badakhshan
A key member of the Taliban group was killed during an operation in northeastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said Monday.

“Yesterday evening, Afghan National Police conducted a security operation to clear some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan,” a statement by MoI said.

The statement further added “The operation was conducted in Band Ghorila village, Raghistan district of northeastern Badakhshan province, as a result a key member of armed Taliban group (Qari Zubair) was killed and three other armed Taliban were wounded.”

According to MoI, the Afghan police forces also discovered some ammunition during the operation.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.

Badakhshan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northeastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

Earlier, a group of 9 Taliban insurgents were killed after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the fellow fighters of the group in this province.

Taliban Control Helmand Districts Despite Operations
Despite large scale military operations in the volatile southern province of Helmand, two districts – Nad Ali and Babaji – are still under the control of the Taliban.

Reporting from Helmand, TOLOnews' correspondent Abdul Wali Arian said although it is poppy-sapping time in the province, fierce battles between security forces and insurgents have resumed.

Arian reports that despite security forces being well prepared they are not getting orders from security organizations to move forward.

"Whenever forces conduct operations the militants flee the areas and after operations end, the militants return more powerful than the past and insurgents attack check posts," Arian said.

Security forces in Helmand province have however criticized central government. They said they are in a defensive position and are waiting for orders to take offensive action.

But residents report that their morale is good.

"The people's morale is good but forces are fighting against militants but they do not have [offensive] operation orders," Arian said.

According to Arian security forces have said that if they are given the order to carry out offensive attacks, they will be able to secure a peaceful environment for the locals.

Africa North
Ukrainian medics escape Sirte
Benghazi and Tunis, 2 May 2016:

A group of 13 male and female Ukrainian medical workers is now reported to be in Brega after escaping from IS-held territory via Ben Jawad.

Much surrounding this report is still unclear and no comment could be obtained from the Ukrainian Libya embassy, currently working out of Tunis. It seems that the medics may have been trapped in Sirte when IS took over the town in February last year.

It is reported that they were smuggled in recent days to Ben Jawad where they were picked up by members of the Petroleum Facilities Guard and taken first to Ras Lanuf. It is unclear if they escaped their IS captors or had been in hiding for something over a year.

In the past Ukrainian diplomats have been tight-lipped about their nationals held in Libya, including 19 arrested in 2011 along with three Belorussians and two Russians and charged with being mercenaries. These men, who always claimed they were oil workers forced to work on some of Qaddafi’s weapons systems, were finally set free in 2014.

Ukrainian diplomats have also said little about four more men arrested during the Revolution who are still being held by Abdul Rauf Kara’s militia in a prison in Tripoli’s Mitiga airport compound.

Sirte’s Ibn Sina hospital once had a large number of Ukrainian personnel.

In March 2015, 15 Ukrainian doctors, as well as medics from India, the Philippines and Serbia were seized from the hospital. It was never made clear who had kidnapped them but they were released after diplomatic intervention and left the country.

hideouts in the country's northeast as troops intensified clearance operations across areas reportedly still inhabited by krazed killers.

Army front man Col. Sani Usman said in a statement that at least three turbans were killed while nine were captured in the operations in northeastern Borno State.

"The troops also recovered 300 herds of cattle rustled by the Boko Haram Death Eaters from Fulani herdsmen and handed over to the right rightful owners," said Usman.

Sunday’s rescue of 400 people brings to around 1,400 the number of hostages freed in the last month alone by the military, according to official figures released on Sunday by commander of the operation Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor.

Afghan translator commits suicide after British authorities reject his asylum claim
An Afghan asylum seeker has reportedly committed suicide in United Kingdom after his application was rejected by the British authorities despite he had served as a translator with the British forces in Afghanistan.

According to the local media reports, the 29-year-old Nangyalai Dawoodzai was suffering from severe depression as he was told by the British authorities that he would be deported.

Dawoodzai had arrived in United Kingdom by risking his life and travelling through risky routes the migrants are usually going through by paying hefty amounts of money to the smugglers.

His service with the British forces as a translator in the restive Helmand province had reportedly put his life at risk as the Taliban group was repeatedly threatening him, a threat which normally the Afghan citizens are receiving from the group for working with the foreign forces.

“This is the most tragic example of a shameful Government policy,” Lord Ashdown, who champions the cause of the translators, told MailOnline.

According to the paper, a campaign has highlighted the plight of former frontline translators who remained in Afghanistan after UK forces left and have been targeted by the Taliban because of their service.

The campaign – supported by a petition signed by nearly 180,000 people, including military chiefs, soldiers and MPs – has revealed how interpreters have been shot dead or beaten. Their homes have been attacked and their children kidnapped and murdered.

The tragic death of Dawoodzai comes as thousands of Afghans have left the country due to growing violence with majority of the Afghans heading towards Europe by travelling through risky routes, including the Turkish waters where hundreds of people have lost their lives.

The Grand Turk
Perpetrator of deadly Turkish car bombing ‘linked to IS group’
[FRANCE24] The perpetrator of a deadly boom-mobileing that hit the Turkish city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border at the weekend is linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) myrmidon group, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's interior minister said on Monday.

The bomber "is a member of a terrorist organization linked to ISIS," Interior Minister Efkan Ala said in televised remarks, using an alternative name for the jihadist group.

One policeman was killed when the boom-mobile went off outside the police headquarters in Gaziantep on Sunday morning. Another police officer later died of his wounds.

Ala said nearly 50 suspects were tossed into the calaboose in connection with the attack.

The announcement will intensify concerns about the risk of jihadist attacks in Turkey, which has already seen tourism fall sharply since the start of the year.

Turkey remains on high security alert after a series of attacks on its soil blamed on Kurdish bandidos Death Eaters and IS jihadists, who still control territory in Syria right up to the Turkish border.

Government front man and Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus told news hounds after the weekly cabinet meeting the authorities had thwarted 49 suicide kabooms in Turkey so far this year.

A radical Kurdish bully boy group, Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), on Sunday claimed a suicide kaboom in Turkey's former Ottoman capital of Bursa last week, saying the female assailant had failed to reach her intended target.

Ala said that the bomber was a member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has waged a three-decade insurgency against the Turkish state. The TAK is usually seen as a splinter group of the PKK.

A member of international coalition against IS group, Turkey has taken more robust action against IS jihadists since last summer.

The Turkish border town of Kilis has come under rocket fire from IS-controlled territory in recent weeks, prompting the army to respond with artillery fire.

In the latest strikes on Kilis on Monday, one person was killed and two maimed when Katyusha-type rockets hit an inhabited area in the town, the Dogan news agency reported.

Twenty people have now been killed in IS strikes on Kilis since January.

Turkish artillery have launched deadly strikes on IS positions in Syria, while drones that took off from an air base in southern Turkey also pounded the jihadists, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported on Monday, citing security sources.

"We have discussed steps to be taken by both using our national resources and in international solidarity to stave off threats arising from across the border," Kurtulmus told news hounds.

Would-be Miami synagogue bomber was reported convert to Islam
[IsraelTimes] James Medina tossed in the clink
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
for attempting to blow up Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, told FBI informant it was a ’call of duty’

The South Florida man arrested for planning to bomb a Miami synagogue has been publicly identified and charged in federal court. James Gonzalo Medina, 40, of Hollywood, appeared in court in Miami on Monday afternoon, several media outlets reported.

Medina, who according to court papers is a convert to Islam, was arrested on a charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in an attempt to blow up the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center during Friday night services, the last night of Passover.

The Conservative synagogue serves some 800 families in Aventura, a thriving Jewish community just north of Miami Beach, according to the synagogue’s website.

Local 10 News reported that the criminal complaint also accuses Medina of planning to attack the synagogue on Yom Kippur. Medina told a confidential informant more than once that he planned to strike during Yom Kippur using AK-47 assault rifles, Local 10 said, citing the complaint. When the informant told Medina the attack might look as if it were orchestrated by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, Medina expressed pleasure, believing it would "inspire other Muslims to attack as well."

Asked by the FBI informant why he wanted to attack the synagogue, Medina said it was his "call of duty" and something he had to do "for the glory of Allah," the complaint said, according to the Washington Post. Medina also told the informant he believed "Jewish people are the ones causing the world’s wars and conflicts."

According to the Sun Sentinel, Medina tried to make a speech during his court appearance, but was stopped by US Magistrate Judge William Turnoff after saying, "I’ve got a few words of my own... My name is James Medina, aka James Mohammed."

Prosecutor Marc Anton told the judge that Medina talked about "obtaining a bomb he could either place under a car or throw it over the wall."

Medina also recorded farewell videos in which he made threats and said goodbye to his family.

"I am a Muslim and I don’t like what is going on in this world. I’m going to handle business here in America. Aventura, watch your back. ISIS is in the house," the complaint said he declared in one video.

After the undercover informant provided Medina with what he said was an bomb, the FBI arrested Medina on his way to the synagogue. The device was not real, authorities said.

Medina is being detained at the Federal Detention Center in Miami and will remain there until at least Thursday, the day of his arraignment and bond hearing.

If convicted, Medina faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison, according to the Sun Sentinel. He has not indicated whether he will plead innocent or guilty.

In a statement published in the Sun Sentinel, the synagogue said its leadership "has been briefed by law enforcement and Jewish community security officials" and been assured "that the synagogue and school were never at risk at any time during the investigation and arrest, and that there are no credible threats directed against us at the present time."

Rabbi Jonathan Berkun and other officials from the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center said on Twitter that the synagogue and its affiliated school were open and "operating as usual" on Monday.

Medina has several prior arrests, including one for sending violent threats via text message. He said in court that he is out of work, divorced and has no significant assets. He was provided a court-appointed lawyer.

Jewish leaders in Europe and the US have warned of increased threats of attacks against Jewish institutions. In 2015, the Senate voted to increase security funding for synagogues, day schools and other institutions under the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

Unknown assailants attack JuD madrassah, leave 15 injured
PESHAWAR: Fifteen people, including three children, were injured in a late-night attack Sunday on a Jamaatud Dawa madrassah in Peshawar's Tehkal area.

Superintendent Police Cantonment Peshawar Kashif said the assailants opened fire and lobbed grenades at the Baitul Mukarrama Alhadees seminary. Members of the seminary were having dinner after lessons when the unknown men attacked the building.

One of the attackers suffered serious injuries and was shifted to Combined Military Hospital Peshawar for treatment where he is in critical condition, the SP said, adding it was possible the attacker was injured as a result of firing by one of his own men. He said the injured attacker was shifted to CMH from Khyber Teaching Hospital as there were no CT Scan machines available.

The SP said interrogation of the arrested individual may shed some light on the motives behind the seminary attack.

Khyber Teaching Hospital sources confirmed they received 16 people injured in the seminary attack, out of which four people were discharged after treatment and 11 retained in the hospital.

Police nab Palestinian suspect in Jerusalem stabbing attack
[IsraelTimes] 18-year-old from West Bank admits carrying out Old City assault that moderately maimed an Israeli man, officials

Police late Monday night incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
a Paleostinian youth suspected of stabbing and moderately injuring an Israeli man in Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday evening.

The suspect was detained after a major manhunt for the perpetrator in the attack in the heart of Jerusalem’s ancient quarter, which ended weeks of relative calm after months of roiling violence in the capital.

Immediately after the attack, security officials shut down the Old City and launched extensive searches for the assailant, the police said in a statement.

The attacker, an 18-year-old resident of the West Bank, admitted during initial questioning that he had carried out the attack. The investigation was ongoing, police said.

According to officials, the victim, apparently in his 60s, said he was stabbed in the back on al-Khaldaya Street in the center of Old City and reached the Austrian Hospice hotel some 300 meters away, where he reported he’d been attacked and asked for help.

Police spokesperson Luba Samri said that officers found a knife at the scene.

The victim was transferred to a local hospital for treatment. Hospital officials described him as stable and conscious.

Islamic Jihad activist killed in Gaza explosion
[IsraelTimes] Two other members of the terror group maimed in mysterious blast
You have to test them for red-green colour blindness before they try to assemble the things, guys.
A Paleostinian activist in the Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group was killed Monday, and two others were maimed, when a bomb went kaboom! east of the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gazoo Strip.

The Paleostinian Health Ministry named the man as 30-year-old Mazen Muhammed Lulu, from the Shejaiya district in the eastern Strip.

The circumstances surrounding the blast were not immediately clear.

According to Paleostinian reports, Lulu was a fighter in the al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.

A statement released by the group mourned the death of Lulu, saying he was killed "as he carried out his duty of jihad."

The Iran-backed Islamic Jihad is the second-strongest armed movement in the Gazoo Strip, after Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

Philippines ‘pleased’ with release of 10 Indonesians
[AA.TR] The Philippines’ government said Monday it was pleased with the release of 10 Indonesians held hostage by ISIS-linked holy warriors, while underlining that operations were ongoing to rescue remaining captives.

The 10 sailors were turned over Sunday to the governor of the majority Muslim island province of Sulu, after being kidnapped in late March from a tugboat off the nearby province of Tawi-Tawi.

Their release came six days after the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
beheaded a Canadian hostage, 68-year-old John Ridsdel, after a 300-million pesos ($6 million) ransom failed to be paid.

"The Philippine Government is pleased at the positive developments resulting in the safe release of 10 Indonesian nationals kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf on March 26, 2016," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement Monday.

"While intensified operations continue on the ground, the DFA maintains close coordination with concerned foreign governments in ensuring the safe return of all the remaining hostages," it added.

After the 10 men were left at the residence of Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan II, they were brought to a military hospital where they cleared checkups and were flown to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta at night.

It has not been confirmed whether a 50 million peso ($1 million) ransom demanded for their release was paid.

While an unnamed source told the Philippine Inquirer daily that the ransom had been paid, Indonesia’s government’s negotiator, Major General Kivlan Zen, was quoted by detik.com as insisting that efforts had involved "purely negotiation".

The Abu Sayyaf is notorious for beheading victims after ransoms have failed to be paid for their release.

After the 10 sailors were freed, Indonesian President Joko Widodo declared that Jakarta was cooperating with its neighbor for the release of four other nationals seized from a tugboat off Tawi-Tawi in mid-April.

The Abu Sayyaf is believed to still be holding more than a dozen captives including four Malaysians kidnapped off the coast of Malaysia’s eastern Sabah state in early April.

Other hostages include a Canadian, a Norwegian and a Filipino woman seized alongside Ridsdel in September, a Dutch national kidnapped more than three years ago in Tawi-Tawi, a Chinese national and six other Filipinos.

Possible NPA bombing spree averted in South Cotabato
[PNA] The Philippine military, police, and villagers prevented what could have been a bombing spree by suspected New People's Army militants in South Cotabato with the discovery of 19 improvised explosive devices in a raid at the group's hideout on dawn on Monday morning.

Acting on tips from villagers, troops seized the IEDs in a compound they raided in a remote village of Dumangas in T'boli, South Cotabato.

Lt. Colonel Benjamin Leander said, "Civilians informed us about the presence of armed men in a safe house, we responded but the armed men were gone."

After a thorough search of the camp, security forces found the large cache of explosives. Leander said the recovered IEDs were similar to landmines used by communist guerrillas around South Cotabato.

No one has claimed ownership of the explosives, but the military suspects they are owned by the Maoist miliatnts, who have been attacking government forces, construction companies and multi-national firms in South Cotabato.

Drones, Turkish artillery hit ISIS in Syria, 34 dead
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Shelling by Turkish artillery and drones which took off from southern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
struck ISIS targets in Syria on Sunday, killing 34 myrmidons, the Turkish military said.

It said the strikes, in response to ISIS rocket attacks which hit the southern Turkish province of Kilis, destroyed six vehicles and five ISIS gun positions.

The border town of Kilis and surrounding area has been hit frequently by rocket fire from ISIS-controlled Syrian territory in recent months, killing civilians.

In Sunday’s strikes, Turkish howitzers and multiple rocket launchers first hit ISIS targets about 12 km south of the border, then four drones that took off from the Incirlik base in southern Turkey destroyed further targets, the military said.
Incirlik base -- where the Americans are?
Turkey has repeatedly fired back at Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
positions under its rules of engagement, but has said it needs greater support from Western allies, citing the difficulty of hitting moving targets with howitzers.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying last week that the United States would deploy a rocket launcher system near the stretch of border that has come under attack. A senior US military official confirmed the matter was under discussion but declined to comment further.
The Times of Israel adds that the Americans were indeed involved:
The Turkish military says artillery shelling and drone attacks by the US-led coalition have struck Islamic State positions in Syria and killed a total of 63 murderous Moslems.

The state-owned Anadolu Agency says the strikes took out multiple rocket launchers and gun positions.

Four drones deployed from the Incirlik air base, a launching point for US-led coalition forces in southern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey, took part in the operation and killed 29 murderous Moslems.

The Arclight airstrikes were informed by intelligence gathered by the Turkish army, the private Dogan news agency reports.

The remaining 34 IS fighters were “neutralized” by rocket fire and artillery shelling from Turkey, according to Anadolu Agency.

ISIS executes 3 al-Nusra troops
[ARA News] ERBIL – Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Monday released a new propaganda video, showing confessions and execution of an alleged secret cell belonging to the al-Qaeda-offshoot group of the Nusra Front in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor.

Local activists confirmed that ISIS executed the suspects in Deir ez-Zor on charges of spying for the ‘Nusra Front’, which has been fighting ISIS in Syria for years.

The ISIS-linked Wilayat al-Furat media center released a video under the banner “The Big Losers”, showing three young men dressed in orange giving confessions and calling other militants, including the Nusra fighters in Syria, to join ISIS ranks.

At the beginning of the video, ISIS sharply criticizes the Nusra Front and Syrian opposition factions, accusing them of apostasy and making concessions at the expense of Muslims.

The ISIS commentator in the video describes the al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front as the ‘Disbelief Front’, for it is fighting ISIS and “working as soldiers for the US-led coalition forces and the Russians” on the ground.

“Al-Hisba police forces in the city of Abu Kamal [on the border with Iraq] in Deir ez-Zor province, were able to capture a cell belonging to al-Golani, leader of the Nusra Front [al-Qaeda branch in Syria],” the ISIS member said.

The alleged Qaeda members who appeared in the video were identified as Yousef Ahmed Al-Abdullah, who confessed he was recruited by one of the princes of the Nusra group; Abd al-Qadir from ash-Shihel area in Deir ez-Zor suburbs, who was manufacturing explosive devices and planting them in ISIS-linked cars; Ahmed Rajab al-Falah from Abu Kamal, who confessed to have leaked information about houses of ISIS leaders.

Then, Abu Taqi al-Shami, an ISIS commander, appears criticizing clerics of the Salafism and al-Qaeda, warning the Muslims to follow the words of those whom he described as “hypocrites”.

Al-Shami praised the terror group [ISIS], describing its members as the brave people who stand steadfast before enemies of al-Baghdadi’s Caliphate.

The group’s message ends with the appearance of two masked militants standing next to al-Shami, participating in the execution of the three blindfolded men. After the execution, the voice of the ISIS official spokesman Abu Mohammad al-Adnani was heard praying for the group to defeat its enemies.

On Sunday, ISIS released propaganda footages, showing the execution of four young men in Syria’s northeastern city of Raqqa on charge of ‘spying for crusaders’ –in reference to the US-led coalition.

Noteworthy, over the past two years, ISIS has publicly executed hundreds of civilians, activists, and journalists on various charges in areas under its control across Syria and Iraq.

ISIS troops capture four Syrian Army checkpoints in Homs
[ARA News] HOMS – Subsequent to fierce clashes, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) were able to recapture several areas from the pro-regime forces in the eastern suburbs Homs, central Syria, killing scores of pro-regime soldiers and wounding dozens more, activists reported on Monday.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, media activist Abdul Halim al-Fayez said that ISIS militants were able to impose their control over four checkpoints for the pro-regime forces near the oilfield of al-Shaer after fierce clashes that started Sunday midnight and lasted until Monday afternoon.

“After pounding the checkpoints with heavy weapons, ISIS launched a major attack on the regime’s army and was able to take over the areas located northwest of al-Shaer oilfield–the first defense line in Homs province,” he reported.

At least 16 soldiers from the regime’s army were killed and over 25 wounded.

In the meantime, the Syrian air force, supported by Russian jets, conducted several airstrikes on ISIS strongholds in the vicinity of al-Shaer oilfield, killing at least 18 ISIS fighters, according to a Syrian military source who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity.

Subsequent to the regime’s control over the historic city of Palmyra in Homs province, ISIS has been active in the eastern suburbs of Homs, waging offensives on the regime-held areas. ISIS has recently taken over the Huweisis district east of Homs, while the group tries to storm the army positions inside the city.
