Residents Claim 30 Civilians Killed In Helmand Airstrike
[ToloNews] Some Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
resident on Wednesday claimed that at least 30 non-combatants were killed in an Arclight airstrike in Garmsir district in the province on Tuesday evening.

The residents said the airstrike was conducted at around 9pm on Tuesday and that the victims were members of one family.

They said that only one member of the family has survived the airstrike, who is a teenager.

The survived member of the family is under treatment at Helmand central hospital.

"It was 9pm when the airstrike began. A Taliban
...Arabic for students...
vehicle was near the house and then the attack started. In the house, 30 people including women and kiddies were killed and only one teenager survived who has sustained injuries," said Mohammadullah, a resident of Garmsir.
Well, that explains it: they weren’t civilians, they were human shields.
"The family had some guests at that night. The airstrike started at 9pm and killed the entire family," said Ahmadullah, a resident of Garmsir.

"We ask government to prevent civilian casualties," said Fida Mohammad, a resident of Garmsir.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Fat Tony demanded his rosco back. He didn't say please...
Helmand governor Mohammad Yasin confirmed the airstrike and said that Taliban as well as civilians have suffered casualties in the operation.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
he did not give details on exact number of civilian casualties in the airstrike.

"Taliban had gathered in the village from other areas and wanted to plan an attack on Garmsir district and our security belts were under threat for the past few days. Then the forces started operation," the governor said.

"A number of key Taliban members were under surveillance of the Air Force. The airstrike has inflicted casualties on both sides," Yasin said.

A Taliban front man, Zabihullah Mujahid, has claimed in a social media post that the foreign forces airstrike in Helmand has killed 23 civilians.

Palestinian arrested in Italy for plotting to poison town’s water supply
[IsraelTimes] Police say suspect linked to Islamic State, planned to put ricin or anthrax in Sardinian town’s water; cousin arrested in September on suspicion of plotting to poison Lebanese army.

A Paleostinian man with links to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group was arrested in Italia Wednesday on suspicion that he was planning a terror attack on the island of Sardinia, according to a state prosecutor.

State anti-terror prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho said the suspect planned to poison the water supply in the central island town of Macomer as well as a nearby military base, with ricin and anthrax.

The suspect was identified by the Il Fatto Quotidiano daily as Alaji Aminun,
...according to An Nahar that’s spelt Alhaj Ahmad Amin...
a Paleostinian refugee from Leb, who moved to Macomer.

The arrest came two months after Lebanese authorities arrested another Paleostinian refugee on suspicion of plotting to poison the water supply of a military barracks there. At the time, officials said the suspect had been linked to the Islamic State and had worked with another man, apparently Aminun, to "carry out a mass poisoning in a foreign country" through "poisoning food during a public holiday," without specifying the location.

De Raho told news hounds at a presser in Rome Wednesday that the 38-year-old suspect planned the chemical attack with his cousin, who resides in Leb. He said Italian authorities were tipped off to the plot by Interpol, who learned of it from Lebanese authorities in September when Aminun’s cousin, 27, was arrested.

It was not clear when Aminun planned to carry out the attack, but De Raho said police believed he wanted the poisoning to coincide with a holiday.

Italia’s anti-terror unit arrested Aminun in downtown Macomer earlier on Wednesday after tracking him for an unspecified amount of time.

Authorities confirmed that Aminun held an Italian residency visa, and had moved to Sardinia from Leb several years ago. He resided in Macomer with his partner, a Moroccan woman, and her four children.

According to local media reports, Aminun’s partner told police she had no knowledge of the poisoning plot.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Italian police have been monitoring the suspect for an extended period of time before his arrest. Security forces requested urgent precautionary measures due to the high risk of the suspected case, and a judge authorized an operation within a few hours.

Special Italian security forces waited for the suspect to leave his home Wednesday morning and arrested him as soon as he entered his van. The security forces had first blockaded the entire area for public safety and to prevent the suspected terrorist from escaping.

Speaking to Baghdad Today news agency, the source said that the soldier was on duty near a checkpoint on the outskirts of Abu Karma village, 25km northeast of Baqubah, when he was shot dead.

According to the source, the security forces launched a manhunt at the nearby gardens in search of the IS sniper.

Three Iraqi civilians killed, wounded in bomb attack northeast of Diyala

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – A security source said on Wednesday that three Iraqi citizens were killed and wounded in a bomb blast in northeastern Diyala.

A booby-trapped motorbike exploded near Abu Sebaa village, 27km northeast of Baqubah, the capital of Diyala province, the source told Baghdad Today news agency.

“The explosion left an Iraqi civilian dead and two others wounded,” added the source, pointing out that the security forces launched a probe into the bomb attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

What is Stalling the Fight against IS in East Syria?
[AnNahar] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has fiercely defended its last holdout in eastern Syria against a more than two-month military offensive by a Kurdish-Arab alliance backed by a U.S.-led coalition.

After the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance successfully expelled the jihadists from other parts of war-torn Syria, why is this latest battle in the far east taking so long?

- WHO IS INSIDE THE HOLDOUT?
Hundreds of fighters are believed to be inside the pocket, which lies in the oil-rich province of Deir Ezzor near the Iraqi border.

The U.S.-led coalition has estimated some 2,000 fighters to be present in the holdout, which includes the towns of Hajin, Sousa and al-Shaafa.

According to SDF commanders on the front line, a great number of those combatants are likely to be non-Syrians.

The SDF has said it believes "major leaders" of IS are hiding inside the pocket, where most front line commanders are Iraqis.

Nicholas Heras, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security, says "a mini army of several hundred fighters... has been assembled by IS there, including some of its best snipers."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, says IS family members are also inside the embattled jihadist holdout.

- WHY THE TOUGH IS FIGHTBACK?
IS overran large parts of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" across territories it controlled.

But various offensives in both countries have routed the jihadists from most of that land, crushing their dreams of statehood.

In Syria, the snuffies saw their dominion shrink to an eastern pocket around Hajin, although they also have a presence in the country's vast Badia desert.

On September 10, the SDF launched an offensive supported by coalition strikes to expel IS from the Hajin patch on the Euphrates River's eastern bank.

Syria analyst Tore Hamming said that, after years of defeats, battle-hardened IS fighters in that last redoubt were likely determined to fight to the bitter end.

"They know that they will either be killed by an air strike, or captured and put into prison," he said.

"IS knows the area extremely well, having been operating there for more than five years now and arguably has some level of local support."

- WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?
Analysts say the battle to expel IS from the Hajin pocket will be tough.

In recent weeks, the jihadists have taken advantage of low visibility in bad weather to launch vicious counter-attacks.

Under cover of sand storms, and using jacket wallahs, they last month managed to reverse all SDF advances inside the pocket.

Most recently, IS fighters have burst out of the fog, killing 92 U.S.-backed fighters since Friday, according to the Observatory.

More than 450 SDF fighters have been killed since the start of their offensive on September 10, the monitor says, while more than 730 jihadists have also died.

SDF front man Kino Gabriel said key obstacles to defeating IS included bad weather, and IS using "all types of weapons, boom-mobiles, and civilians as human shields."

On the opposing side, the SDF is "using all its capacities including special forces, heavy weapons and all military units that are present," he said.

Heras said the remaining battle in Deir Ezzor would be "the most treacherous of the entire campaign" against IS.

"The SDF is relying on local Arab tribal fighters to wage the war against IS there, and these local fighters do not want to take casualties," the analyst said.

"IS has turned this area into a deathtrap, and the SDF's (local) fighters are well aware of this."

All this makes "the fight there slow-moving and tortuous, which is putting pressure on the SDF to hurry things up," he said.

The coalition remains optimistic.

"At this point in the operation, there are not enough IS (fighters) to make any significant or lasting gains," coalition deputy commanding general Christopher Ghika said on Sunday.

The coalition says IS has lost most of its financial resources, and is instead relying on improvised bombs and cave complexes "to retain their shrinking influence."
