Very briefly, M., as I just poked my head out from doing articles for the midnight rollover:

Under Your Name, you can either go with whatever anonymous nym/nic Fred’s engine provides, or delete it and type in your own (keep it clean — this is a family site), or click on Pic-a-Nic, which will give you something else random from Fred’s random anonymizer machine. If you don’t like that you can keep clicking until you find something you like better, but be aware that I probably won’t recognize you unless you are consistent under a single identity. Zenobia F when he is in poetry mode and a few others (Hemingway, drunk-voice-to-text guy).

Email and website are optional — people mostly don’t give those for security reasons. Safer to share that in the O Club, which is an open chat room, not part of the permanent record.

Icons across the bottom from left to right: Bold, Italics, Underline, Strike through, bulleted list, indent, shrink text, grow text, hyperlink. For all of these, highlight the text you want to do something to, then click on the icon.

I don’t know what the square bracket thingy does.

Foto and the square colourful thingy to the right of it are for adding images. Rantburg's collection can be perused here If you find an image you like, somehow you combine those three thingies to make it work — no doubt there are others here who can clarify that, and then I will also know.

Whatever you do, please Preview your comment to make sure it does what you intended, otherwise you’ll end up like Dale did today, feeling frustrated about getting 90% of the way there without communicating the particular bit of cleverness you’d intended. ;-)

Hope that helps.

Meanwhile,

Taliban militants detonate 4 car bombs, loses 25 fighters in failed attack in Kandahar
[KhaamaPress] The Afghan cops killed 25 bully boyz during an intense battle in Maruf district of Kandahar on Saturday night.

The Ministry of Interior in a statement said the Talibs launched a major offensive on Maruf district compound by detonating four boom-mobiles.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
the interior ministry said the security forces effectively responded to the assault and killed 25 bully boyz during an intense shootout.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had been cornered by the banditti...
the Kandahar Police Chief Gen. Tadin Khan Achakzai confirmed that Talibs detonated boom-mobiles during an attack on Maruf district compound.

Gen. Tadin Khan further added that some security personnel also bit the dust during the attack.

Ghani Slams Taliban Attack That Killed Eight Civilians

[ToloNews] President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
in a statement on Sunday condemned the Taliban’s bombings in the southern province of Kandahar that killed at least 11 people, eight of them the employees of the provincial office of the Independent Election Commission.

The attack was carried out by four attackers who drove explosive-laden Humvees, targeting the district governor’s compound in Maroof district of Kandahar province, the provincial police chief Gen. Tadeen Khan said.

Khan said the attack was carried out at early 2 am on Sunday. It was followed by few hours of clashes between other attackers and the security forces, he added.

Hours after the attack, the provincial police spokesman Jamal Barikzai said that the attack left 11 dead and 27 others wounded.

He said that 17 Taliban fighters were killed in the attack.

Ghani said in the statement that attacking a civilian institution which is working for institutionalizing democracy in the country, is an inhuman and unforgivable act. However, he did not mention the Taliban in his statement.

“Terrorists are targeting civilians and public institutions to hide their defeat on the battlefields,” Ghani said, adding that “but they should know that they will not reach their notorious ends by such acts.”

Maroof is a remote and the most insecure district in Kandahar and more parts of it are under Taliban’s influence.
Al Ahram adds:
Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman said the fighters killed election commission employees and 57 members of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF). They also captured 11 others with five vehicles and a large cache of weapons during the attack at the district centre.

But Afghan government officials said the Taliban had exaggerated the casualty figures.

Sudan military council calls for an urgent agreement with leading protest group
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The deputy head of Sudan’s Transitional Military Council, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, has called for "an urgent and comprehensive agreement" with the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) opposition coalition.

"We seek a comprehensive peace in Sudan that does not exclude anyone. The mission of the transitional council is to protect the Sudanese revolution," Daglo, known as Hemedti, said.

The Transitional Military Council said that unknown snipers shot at least six civilians and three members of the Rapid Support Forces as tens of thousands marched in the capital demanding a return to civilian rule.

Tens of thousands of people erupted into the streets in Khartoum on Sunday demanding the ruling military hand over to civilians, in the largest demonstrations since a deadly security service raid on a protest camp three weeks ago.

Seven Sudanese protesters killed, 181 wounded in Sunday demonstrations
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Seven people were killed and 181 others were maimed in Sudan during Sunday mass demonstrations, the state news agency (SUNA) reported citing the health ministry.

Earlier, a doctors committee linked to the protest movement said that five protesters were killed during mass demonstrations that rocked the country as tens of thousands of people protested against the ruling generals.

"The death of four deaders in the city of Omdurman on the road of our victorious revolution brings the number of deaders to five" in Sunday’s protests, the committee said, after it reported earlier that a protester was rubbed out in the town of Atbara.

"There are several seriously maimed by the bullets of the military council militias in hospitals of the capital and the provinces," it added.

Earlier, witnesses said that the Sudanese police fired tear gas at protesters in three districts of Khartoum on Sunday.

The deputy head of Sudan’s Transitional Military Council, Gen.

Tens of thousands protest army rule in Sudan
[DAWN] Tens of thousands of protesters erupted into the streets in Sudan's capital and elsewhere in the country on Sunday calling for civilian rule nearly three months after the army forced out long-ruling autocrat Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
The demonstrations came amid a weekslong standoff between the ruling military council and protest leaders.

Talks between the two sides over a power-sharing agreement collapsed earlier this month when security forces violently broke up a protest camp in Khartoum.

The ensuing clampdown killed at least 128 people cross the county, according to protest organisers. Authorities say the toll was 61, including three security forces.

The marches, the first since the June 3 crackdown, also mark the 30th anniversary of the coup that brought al-Bashir to power in 1989, toppling Sudan's last elected government. The military removed al-Bashir in April amid mass protests against his rule.

The crowds gathered at several points across the capital and its sister city of Omdurman before marching toward the homes of those killed since the uprising began.

"This is a very important day for the Sudanese people," protester Hamdi Karamallah said.

The protest movement erupted in December, triggered by an economic crisis. The protesters remained in the streets after al-Bashir was tossed and jugged
You have the right to remain silent...
, fearing that the military would cling to power or preserve much of his regime.

Senegal seizes 798 kg of cocaine hidden in cars on a ship
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
has seized 798 kg of cocaine hidden inside new cars on a ship travelling from Brazil, the customs authority said on Sunday, the latest in a series of large seizures off the West African coast this year.

It said the cocaine was discovered overnight inside 15 cars that the ship, which anchored at port in the capital Dakar, was transporting.

The discovery follows the seizure last Wednesday of 238 kg of cocaine smuggled from Brazil in a similar manner through Dakar’s port.

Drug smugglers use West Africa as a transshipment point for cocaine en route from South America to Europe
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
Last week, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said 3.4 tons of cocaine were seized in Africa in 2017, back up to 2013 levels after falling to 1.2 tons in 2015, although the data likely underestimates the extent of drug trafficking on the continent.

Seizures in West Africa are on the rise this year, with several unusually large quantities intercepted.

Yes there are court cases on this but the details are different. E.g., in one important case a 911 call was made and the police, although responding didn't do it quickly. In another case there was a restraining order that the police assumed was being followed even though someone said it wasn't. That is a tougher challenge.

However, suing the Antifa funders is I think a possibility.

In the case with Ngo, the police certainly were aware of previous violence by Antifa and certainly aware that there was going to be trouble. This awareness makes the case different than the two mentioned above but perhaps not different enough for a win.

    Iraq
Explosion kills one, injures two in Kirkuk
[Rudaw] An improvised bomb (IED) targeted Islahi village in Diyala province, killing one civilian and injuring another two, a Peshmerga commander said on Sunday afternoon. He accused the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) of being behind the blast.

"Today at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, an improvised bomb went kaboom! in Islahi village in Gulala, injuring two people and killing another," Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Mustafa of the Peshmerga forces intelligence told Rudaw, using an alternative name for Jalawla, in Diyala.

ISIS took control of Jalawla beginning in August 2014, burning down houses of Kurdish and Shiite families. The Peshmerga forces drove out the murderous Moslems in November 2015.

    However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
the city and other areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad fell to the Iraqi Army and the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces [PMF] militias, or Hashd al-Shaabi in Arabic, in October 2017 following the Kurdistan Region’s referendum on independence.

Jalawla’s security has been left in the hands of the local police and Hashd forces, who don’t seem to coordinate.

Rudaw reached out to Garmyan police, but they were unavailable to comment on the earth-shattering kaboom.

ISIS has been active in disputed areas, benefitting from the gap in security, and have grabbed credit for a number of crop fires in the area.

Mahmoud Sangawi, a former Peshmerga commander in Jalawla when the Peshmerga controlled the area, claimed in May that the PMF were committing "Arabization" by burning Kurdish crop fields, forcing them to flee their homes.

"They raid Kurdish homes every night, burn their wheat and barley farms, blow up their cars, and plant bombs in their farms so they flee the place," Sangawi told Rudaw. "This round of Arabization has started in a different way and with a different strategy. It is the Hashd al-Shaabi who is responsible for this."

    Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel frees PA minister for Jerusalem affairs hours after arrest
[IsraelTimes] Fadi al-Hadami’s lawyer says detention was due to recent activities, including accompanying Chile’s president on a visit to the Temple Mount.

Israeli police Sunday released the Paleostinian minister for Jerusalem affairs from custody, after questioning him over claims that he had organized activities in the city in violation of Israeli rules, his lawyer said.

Fadi al-Hadami was arrested in his East Jerusalem home early Sunday and taken for questioning, with a police front man saying he had been involved in unspecified "activities in Jerusalem."

His lawyer Mohannad Jbara said the arrest was due to recent activities that have included accompanying Chile’s president during a visit to Jerusalem’s flashpoint al-Aqsa mosque complex on the Temple Mount. Jbara said Hadami was released Sunday afternoon.

Israel has detained the previous PA Jerusalem minister on several occasions, as well as the PA’s governor of Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, Hadami was seen alongside Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, on a tour of the holy site.

That infuriated Israel, which said the tour constituted a violation of regulations and a breach of understandings reached with Santiago for the head of state’s visit. According to the Foreign Ministry, the two countries had agreed beforehand that Pinera would not be accompanied by any Paleostinian officials.

The status of the Temple Mount, located above the Western Wall, is one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict.

It is the holiest site in Judaism and the third-holiest for Moslems, after Mecca and Medina, administered by the Moslem Waqf, but secured by Israeli police.

Chile later said Pinera’s visit was private, with Hadami’s presence not part of official protocol.

Hadami’s arrest also came after days of violent unrest in Jerusalem.

Overnight Saturday, Israeli police "continued dealing with riots and disturbances in a number of neighborhoods, when stones were thrown at officers and fireworks fired at them," police front man Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement.

Two officers were maimed and six suspects arrested, Rosenfeld said.

The continued unrest followed the shooting of a 20-year-old Paleostinian in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya by Israeli police, after he had allegedly thrown fireworks at them.

The young man, identified as Mohammed Obeid, died of his wounds, the Paleostinian health ministry said.

Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it. Most of the international community has never recognized the annexation, though US President Donald Trump
    ...Oh, noze! Not him!...
’s administration became the first to do so in 2017.

The Israeli government sees all of Jerusalem as its undivided capital, while the Paleostinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Palestinians clash with police in Jerusalem over death of fireworks shooter
[IsraelTimes] Israeli officers reported to raid mourning tent in Issawiya to confiscate posters of Mohammad Samir Obeid, whose body has been held since Thursday.

Paleostinian protesters clashed with police in East Jerusalem late Saturday and early Sunday amid simmering anger after officers killed a man who launched fireworks at them in the area on Thursday.

Rioters launched fireworks at police and hurled stones and Molotov cocktails to protest the shooting death of Mohammad Samir Obeid, who was killed Thursday after shooting fireworks at police, according to Israeli authorities.

Much of the unrest was centered around the Paleostinian East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya, which has seen nightly fighting since last week, and the nearby Shuafat neighborhood and refugee camp of the same name.

Clashes were also reported in the neighborhood of Silwan, outside of the Old City.

There was no immediate indication of arrests or injuries.

On Friday, at least 80 protesters suffered light injuries in widespread rioting over the death of 20-year-old Mohammad Samir Obeid, who was shot by police Thursday night during an arrest operation there.

According to police, officers opened fire when Obeid launched fireworks at them from a close range, putting their lives in danger. Authorities have refused to release his body.

According to the Ma’an Paleostinian news outlet, police on Saturday night raided a mourning tent put up by Obeid’s family in Issawiya and confiscated a poster of him.

Video published online showed officers protesters throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at officers in riot gear, who were dragging what was reported to be a poster of Obeid out of Issawiya.

Other videos showed rioters also shooting fireworks at officers, and damage to a light rail train which runs through Shuafat.

#5  An S-200 anti aircraft missile that targeted Israeli jets, exploded in mid air and it's bits fell over a 2 km radius, some 20km north of Nicosia, north Cyprus.

Cypriot PM Ersin Tatar has said nobody was injured in the pre-dawn explosion near the village of Tashkent. Maximum (effective) range for these missiles is 150-200 km. If it were fired off Latakia, Jableh, or any coastal point, a point within 2 km above the crash site would be within 210-230 km.

The 15 people were killed in a separate incident, an Israeli airstrike near Damascus and the central Homs province.

Syria says four killed as Israeli jets hit targets in Homs and Damascus
[IsraelTimes] Damascus claims to have intercepted several incoming missiles fired from Lebanese airspace; observer says Iran-linked base targeted; no comment from IDF.

Syria said Israeli jets attacked several military sites near the capital Damascus and the central city of Homs early Monday, killing four civilians, including a small infant.

State news agency SANA said that Syrian air defense had intercepted several of the incoming missiles that were fired from Lebanese airspace.
"The remainder were intercepted by Iranian targets"
The report said four civilians, including a "month-old baby," were killed and 21 people injured in explosions in Sahnaya, a neighborhood of Damascus. It blamed the deaths on "Zionist aggression."

SANA gave no further details on the sites targeted.

    However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, said the strikes had targeted a research center and a military airport west of the city of Homs where the Hezbollah Shiite terror group and Iranians are deployed.

Rami Abdel Rahman, the observatory chief, said the strikes injured some of these forces.

The targets near Damascus were still unclear.

There was no response from the Israel Defense Forces, which rarely comments on reported strikes.

The reported strikes came just hours after an Israeli satellite imagery analysis company said Syria’s entire S-300 air defense system appeared to be operational, indicating a greater threat to Israel’s ability to conduct Arclight airstrike
    ...KABOOM!...
s against Iranian and pro-Iranian forces in the country. Until now, only three of the country’s four surface-to-air missile launchers had been seen fully erected at the Masyaf base in northwestern Syria. Israel has threatened to destroy the S-300 system if it is used against its fighter jets, regardless of the potential blowback from Russia.
