Highways Remain Closed As Clashes Continue In Baghlan

Main highways in northern Afghanistan – the Kabul-Baghlan and Baghlan-Kunduz highways – have been closed to traffic over the past two days after the Taliban militants attacked the northern and northeastern cities of Kunduz and Baghlan.

The Taliban’s attack on the city of Kunduz was repelled by Afghan forces but sources say that threats remain high on the outskirts of the city near the Kunduz-Takhar and Baghlan-Kunduz highways.

The highways connect Kabul with the northern province of Balkh and northeastern provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan. Sources said that hundreds of passengers have been stranded on two sides of the highway.

TOLOnews reporter Sharif Amiry who is in Pul-e-Khumri city, the center of Baghlan, said Taliban militants were pushed back towards “Cement Khana” area on the outskirts of Pul-e-Khumri city.

The Ministry of Interior said in a statement that Afghan forces targeted the Taliban from three directions and pushed them back to Cement Khana area of Baghlan which is far from the center of the city.

“At least 21 Taliban were killed and 13 others were wounded while eight others were arrested in Baghlan clashes,” the statement said.

Baghlan hospital officials said eight people including four civilians were killed in the clashes and 40 others, including 28 civilians, were wounded.

TOLOnews reporter says some Baghlan residents have also taken arms to fight against the Taliban.

Residents Say Taliban Can Make A Comeback In Kunduz

[ToloNews] The Taliban can make a comeback in Kunduz city, the residents of the northeastern province said two days after the Taliban outfits launched a brazen attack on the city with the military analysts describing fresh offensive on the highly-strategic town a show of force by the resurgent movement to influence the negotiations in Doha.

The residents called on the Afghan security forces to make sure during their clearance operations that no Taliban insurgent is hiding around the city.

This comes as a suicide bombing targeted a unit of Afghan forces on the outskirts of Kunduz city near the main highway which connects Kunduz with other provinces, including Kabul.

The attack left at least six security force members dead and 15 others wounded, according to Ministry of Interior Affairs.

But the deputy head of Kunduz Provincial Council, Amruddin Wali said the situation remains critical in the northeastern province.

“They martyred 10 to 12 security force members only in one check post. The situation in Dasht-e-Archi is also fragile,” Mr. Wali said.

“The Air Force arrived in Dasht-e-Archi very quickly and military supplies were delivered there, from air and ground, however, we also had some casualties,” a spokesman to Kunduz governor, Esmatullah Muradi, said.

Taliban attacked the city of Kunduz on Thursday, August 29, but were pushed back by Afghan forces after almost 12 hours.

The clashes left 56 Taliban fighters dead, according to Ministry of Interior.

Moreover, at least 20 security force members and five civilians lost their lives in the clashes.

“There are water and electricity, also telecom services are working, but threats remain around Kunduz,” said Munir Mohammadi, a civil society activist.

A spokesman for Ministry of Interior, Nusrat Rahimi, assured that proper measures are in place to ensure the security of the province.

“Currently, we are undertaking an operation in Imam Sahib district. The plan is to break the enemy’s strength so that it cannot launch an attack on the city once again,” Mr. Rahimi said.

Official says 16 dead, 119 hurt in Taliban attack in Kabul
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ‐ The death toll from a Taliban suicide attack in the Afghan capital late Monday night rose to 16 civilians, with another 119 people wounded, an official said, while angry residents climbed into the international compound that had been targeted and set part of it on fire.

Thick black smoke rose Tuesday morning from the Green Village, home to several international organizations and guesthouses and a frequent target of attacks ‐ to the peril of nearby local residents as well.

Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said some 400 foreigners had been rescued after the suicide bombing targeted the compound, which houses several international organizations and guesthouses. The blast occurred on the street outside the compound and destroyed a number of homes.

Five attackers were shot and killed by security forces after the blast caused by a tractor rigged with explosives, Rahimi said. The explosion hit the western wall of the compound.

The attack occurred just hours after a U.S. envoy briefed the Afghan government on an agreement "in principle" with the Taliban that would see 5,000 U.S. troops leave the country within five months.
Tolo News adds:
The blast happened at around 9:55 pm Kabul time, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Nusrat Rahimi, said.

He said that a fuel station in the area caught fire in the explosion.

Mr. Rahimi said that five attackers were involved in the attack who were killed after Special Forces entered the area.

He said the explosion happened in Kabul’s police district 9 (PD9) near Green Village, a residential area for foreign nationals, offices and NGOs.

Top security official, three gunmen dead following gunfire exchange in Tunisia
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The head of Tunisia’s National Guard Center and three button men died following an exchange of gunfire in the Tunisian municipality of Haidra, near the border with Algeria, local media reported on Monday.

Local media cited security sources as saying that "Haidra is witnessing a gunfire exchange between united of the National Guard and terrorist elements."

The clash occurred on the first day of the country's presidential campaign, authorities said.

National guard officers and army troops were tracking a radical group in the Kef mountains near the Algerian border when shooting broke out, killing the four, national guard front man Housameddine Jbabli told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

The security operation is ongoing near the town of Haidra in the Kasserine region, he said.

Tunisian security forces have stepped up land and air operations against bully boyz hiding in the hard-to-reach mountainous region, where dozens have been killed in festivities in recent years.

Monday's clash came on the day Tunisia's presidential campaign is officially opening, after the country's first democratically elected president died in office in July. A total of 26 candidates are running to lead the country, which unleashed the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011.

Tunisia's post-revolution leaders have struggled to contain extremism in recent years, notably along its borders with Algeria and Libya.

Power station in Tripoli's southern suburbs set ablaze by artillery shelling
[Libya Observer] Fire broke at the Gurgani power station in Ain Zara in southern Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
after an artillery shell had fallen on one of the turbines, thus prevailing a blackout in large areas of the district.

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said on Facebook that the shelling and fire destroyed a depot containing equipment and wires, while two cars were damaged.

It added that firemen had rushed to the station and, with the help of residents, managed to put out the fire without any human losses.

GECOL indicated that Gurgani power station is one of the most viable electricity generating units that feeds the whole district of Ain Zara with power, saying it has cost 3 million Libyan dinars to build, let alone the time to be spent - over 10 months - to import new equipment and the efforts to be exerted to rebuild the damaged units and turbines so it comes operational once again.

GECOL added that this is not the first time power grids and stations get targeted as it has warned before that if fighting continues to damage power stations and towers and if workers continue to be prevented from fixing them, then a total blackout will prevail in the country.

Saudi-led airstrikes on Yemen rebel-run prison kill over 100

rebel-run detention center that was hit a day earlier by Saudi-led coalition Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s, killing over 100 people and wounding dozens.

It is the deadliest such attack so far this year in a stalemated four-year war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, thrust millions to the brink of famine and spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The Saudi-led coalition, which has fought the Iran-backed Houthis since 2015, has faced international criticism for airstrikes that have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties, killing thousands of civilians.

By the early afternoon, 86 bodies had been pulled from the ruins of a building complex in southwestern Dhamar province, originally a college but converted by the Houthi rebels to a detention center, Yemen’s Red Islamic Thingy says.

There were around 170 detainees at the facility when the airstrikes hit on Sunday. The International Committee for the Red Thingy says 40 maimed are being treated for injuries while the rest are presumed dead, and that it will likely take days to recover all the bodies. The Houthis say the detainees were captured forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, and that both the Red Thingy and the coalition knew detainees were being held there.

#2  War X Abdul Factor = Deadly Accidents

The accident is the byproduct of a condition multiplied by the dangerous nature of mass murdering weapons. A war is the fault of the initiators.

The houthis attack Saudi Arabia, they aggregate their political prisoners and detainees along with weapon stockpiles, their own higher ranks into hospital, college and other buildings. They are responsible for the coalition strikes.

Iraq
Kurdish security forces arrest alleged ISIS member for ‘beheading’ a man in camp
[Rudaw] Kurdish security forces known as Asayesh say they arrested an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
) fighter who "beheaded" a male at a displaced people camp on Sunday.

The Asayesh said that a man from the Shargat area about 100 kilometers south of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
was found decapitated in the Debaga camp for displaced Iraqis in the southern Erbil province early Sunday morning.

"Early Sunday, a murder incident took place in Debaga refugee camp where a resident of the camp...who was originally from the Shargat district, was found beheaded," read a statement from the Asayesh Erbil directorate’s media office.

After an investigation, the Asayesh determined the alleged killer, who is only 15-years-old and a resident of the camp, was a member of ISIS.

"The perpetrator confessed to being a member of ISIS [Islamic State] and carried it out along with four other terrorists, directed by ISIS," added the statement, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Some rights groups have accused Kurdistan Region security officials of torturing minors until they confess to being part of ISIS. In January, Human Rights Watch released a report based on interviews with boys under the age of 18 who said the Asayesh had beaten and electrocuted them while they were in jug to extract admissions they were part of the group. The KRG has denied the report and torturing children ISIS suspects it has in detention, however.

Incidents like the beheading are rare in Kurdistan Region, but in the disputed Kurdish-Iraqi territories and areas near Mosul, ISIS fighters and sleeper cells are active, benefiting from the security vacuum between Kurdish and Iraqi forces’ positions. The Kurdistan Region was spared ISIS occupation in 2014 due to victories by Kurdish Peshmerga forces against the group and aerial support from the US.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the Kurdistan Region faced a wave of migration from other parts of Iraq due to the ISIS crisis, mostly from Iraq’s northern provinces like Nineveh and Kirkuk. There are roughly a million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the Kurdistan Region, of which about 327,000 are in the Erbil province. The Duhok province takes the lion’s share with nearly half a million refugees and IDPs, according to the Kurdistan Region’s Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC).

The detained perpetrator’s age is of note as an aide to Iraq’s national security advisor warned last week that the children and wives of ISIS fighters are a "ticking time bomb."

"ISIS has ended, but the krazed killers’ thoughts remain, thoughts that could lead to terrorism, through which ISIS could resurge," Ali Nassir Binyan, aide to Falih Fayyadh, told Rudaw last month. "We believe that some of these thoughts persist in the IDP camps."

There are more than 45,000 children born under ISIS rule in Iraqi IDP camps, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

KRG tells villagers near Turkish border to leave as Turkey-PKK conflict escalates
[Rudaw] The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is calling on locals from more than a dozen villages in the Duhok province to avoid their areas amid escalated Ottoman Turkish Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s on alleged Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the region.

The mayor of the Derker town east of Zakho said that people in the area have been told to stay away.

"Last Wednesday, Zakho security forces informed us to warn residents from 15 villages in Derker and Batifa sub districts of visiting and commuting in their villages," Zeravan Musa told Rudaw.

Derker and Batifa are small towns located in the Sinat-Haftanin mountainous areas near the Ottoman Turkish border.

The third phase of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
’s Operation Claw against the PKK began on August 24 and is focusing on places where PKK fighters are apparently hiding in the Sinat-Haftanin region, according to the Ottoman Turkish Defense Ministry.

Musa said Ottoman Turkish forces do not coordinate with local officials when conducting operations against the PKK.

"We do not know anything of the operation as no coordination has been done with us," he said.

The orders to avoid the area will have adverse affects on the local economy, according to one resident.

"We make our living out of our farmlands," Aziz Sali, from the Sheransh village, told Rudaw. "But now, security forces are warning us not to get close to our village."

As part of the third phase of the ground operation, Turkey has entered two kilometers deep into the Kurdistan Region's territory, an Iraqi border security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to restrictions speaking to media, told Rudaw. He also said Turkey does not coordinate its moves with Iraqi or Kurdish forces.

"As border patrol forces, Turkey has not coordinated with us about carrying out the operation," the official said. "We understand they have entered two kilometers deep into [the Kurdistan Region] near Haftanin area."

Some of the villages to be avoided include Haftanin, Sinat, Qasrok, Pis Agha, Ava Gize and Sheransh.

On Sunday morning, five suspected members of the PKK were killed when a Ottoman Turkish warplane attacked their vehicle in the Bari Gari district northeast of Duhok city near the Ottoman Turkish border.

The first phase of Operation Claw began on May 27, followed by a second phase described as a "follow-up" operation on July 12. The first two phases were in the Khakurk region northeast of Erbil near the Ottoman Turkish and Iranian borders.

Turkey has not announced the end of any of Operation Claw’s phases.

Turkey regularly uses fighter jets to hit the PKK in the Kurdistan Region, but Operation Claw utilizes ground forces as well. The latest phase is supported by Turkey’s air force, army aviation forces, tanks and armed drones, the Ottoman Turkish Defense Ministry said.

in central Iraq, a security source said.

"A force of the 313th brigade of Saraya al-Salam (Peace Brigades) clashed with a number of Islamic State turbans in Samaraa city, north of the capital Baghdad, leaving eight bandidos bandidos murderous Moslems killed," the source told Iraqi news website Alghad Press.

"The festivities also left two members of Saraya al-Salam dead and two others maimed," the source added.
Rudaw has the rest of the story:

The mayor of Samarra where the attack took place said that the Saraya al-Salam group came under heavy ISIS

attack.

"A checkpoint of brigade 131 of Saraya al-Salam in the al-Zoor area was attacked by ISIS holy warriors on Monday," Mahmoud Khalaf told Rudaw. "Intense festivities erupted between the two sides."

Saraya al-Salam, meaning "Peace Brigades," is a militia headed by the prominent Shiite holy man Muqatada al-Sadr. The group is part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as Hashd al-Shabi, that are predominantly Shiite Moslem militias formed in 2014 to fight ISIS.

Sadr also heads the Sayirun bloc - the largest in the Iraqi parliament.

The official account of Saraya al-Salam’s brigade 131 revealed that at least two of their fighters were killed during the ISIS attack on their channel on the Telegram messaging service.

ISIS grabbed credit for the attack on Monday on one of its Telegram channels.

Brigade 131 of Saraya al-Salam announced on Sunday that it sent reinforcements to Samarra in order to maintain the security in the city during Muharam ceremonies.

Muharam is the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is the most spiritual month after Ramadan to Moslems.

On Sunday, an Iraqi federal police intelligence unit seized four bombs belonging to ISIS sleeper cells in the Jazira Mukeshefah area in northern Samarra. Federal police also seized 10 missiles and BKC machine guns, the Iraqi Security Media Cell, a part of the Ministry of Defense, said in a Facebook post.

In Iraq's Baiji, mines turn farms into killing fields
[France24] One man lost his uncle. Another is mourning for two sons. Farmers and herders in Iraq's Baiji say mines left by the Islamic State group turned their beloved orchards into killing fields.

The improvised explosive devices, planted by jihadists trying to fend off Iraqi troops in 2015, have also discouraged scores of families from returning to their battered farming towns around Baiji, in the north of the country.

"Daesh's ghosts are still here. Their crimes are still there, under the earth," said local official Abu Bashir, using an Arabic acronym for IS.

His thin face contorted into a grimace as he recalled his personal loss to those "ghosts" -- both his sons.

"We came back in March 2018 and found the area booby-trapped. There was nowhere we could feel safe," he told AFP.

"As the kids were playing, a bomb exploded under my six-year-old son who was outside the house. He was killed immediately."

Exactly a year later, in March of this year, unexploded ordnance also killed his 18-year-old son.

He said the experience had left him too scarred to try rebuilding his home, reduced to rubble by ferocious fighting between IS and security forces.

"A man bitten by a snake will be afraid of a rope, as the saying goes. After my two boys were killed, I'm afraid of everything."
