Tucson Border Patrol agents prepare for busy summer as record numbers of migrant encounters continue upward
[FoxNews] Customs and Border Protection officials are warning migrants to not cross the desert into Arizona in dangerous conditions.

The number of migrants trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally continues to rise and so does the temperature along the Southwest border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Arizona are preparing for a busy summer ahead, working in triple-digit temperatures.

CBP’s Tucson Sector opened their doors Thursday to media to help warn migrants not to cross in the desert heat.

"The message is simple, don't do it. The desert is vast and it's treacherous, when you cross illegally you put your life in incredible peril. I'm telling you this not only as a Border Patrol agent, but as one who spent his entire 23-year career in Arizona. I speak from experience," said Sabri Dikman, acting deputy chief patrol agent with the Tucson Sector Border Patrol.

Alongside CBP members, representatives from the governments of Mexico and Guatemala were also present, as well as Juanita Molina, director of the Border Action Network.

"Many people die from dehydration, from exposure, but also another element of this is that we find many skeletal remains, so people pass and we don't know why," Molina said.

The Tucson sector sees its fair share of drug smuggling, human trafficking and illegal crossing, but it's not as busy as Texas. However, they do have the most migrant deaths.

"It's a fact, more migrant deaths have been reported in Arizona than anywhere else along the Southwest border," Dikman said. "I’m talking thousands of people since 1998 when I started my career."

"Tucson sector performs multiple rescue operations daily in the summer heat," he added. "We have over 250 EMT and paramedic trained agents assigned throughout our sector, as well as the Border Patrol search trauma and rescue team. We have 34 rescue beacons and 30 rescue placards deployed in remote areas where migrants are known to cross, and we are installing more daily."

Officials said they don’t expect the heat to deter anyone from coming. This is the busiest they’ve been since 2013. Across the Southwest border, the number of migrants encountered in April increased slightly to 178,622 compared to 173,383 in March, which was the highest number in 20 years. However, the number of unaccompanied minor encounters slightly decreased.

"What I hear thousands of times over these years is 'I'd rather die trying. So as much as we try to produce this message, we know that people are going to continue to cross, and what I hope from this community and from these instances is that we continue to put resources into saving those who come to our shores, saving those who cross into our desert," Molina said. "I worked in many emergency rooms where they train combat doctors, but I was completely ill-prepared to see what happened here in the desert, and the desolation, the moment where you find someone, and you know that they're unstable, and you need to get help immediately."

To help combat the issue, they’re deploying an extra flight crew with a paramedic and more portable rescue beacons so migrants in danger can call for help. For now, agents are asking migrants not to come, but if they do, call 911, or try to flag down their helicopters to get attention from border agents fast.

"There are about 18,000 square miles of desert, and mountains we cover, if a person is lost or in need of help, it's a proverbial needle in a haystack. Please stay out of the desert, lives are at stake," said Michael Montgomery, director of air operations, CBP air and marine operations Tucson Air Branch. "When calling 911 for help, stay in place, do not venture away from where you have called 911. If a helicopter is nearby, wave a shirt or another object. Make movement, you would be surprised how well people blend into the vast desert."

Afghanistan
U.S. Pulls Out of Major Kandahar Base in Southern Afghanistan
[AnNahar] The United States has completed its withdrawal from Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan, once the second largest military base in the country for US forces, officials said Friday.

"They have not officially handed over the base to us but I can confirm they left the base on Wednesday," said Khoja Yaya Alawi, a front man for the Afghan army in Kandahar.

"They have handed over all the facilities to Afghan forces," Massoud Pashtun, the director of Kandahar Airport, added.

An official handover is expected to take place after the Moslem holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which ends on Saturday, both officials said.

At its height, the airfield was the second largest base for US and international troops.

Kandahar province was the birthplace of the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and has in recent months seen intense festivities between turbans and Afghan forces.

The Taliban and Afghan forces are currently in the middle of a three-day ceasefire which has granted respite for Afghans across the country as they celebrate the Moslem holiday.

The U.S. military did not immediately comment.

US to Tackle Terrorism Threats in Afghanistan after Withdrawal
[ToloNews] The Pentagon has said that the United States will address the issue of threats emancipating from terrorism in Afghanistan even after the withdrawal of American forces from the country.

David Helvey, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, told members of US Congress Committee on Armed Services that the United States was assessing ways to combat terrorist groups in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the US and coalition forces.

"As part of the inter-agency review of the United States’ policy in Afghanistan, the administration assesses that threat from violent mostly peaceful Death Eater organizations against the United States now emanating from Afghanistan can be addressed without a persistent United States’ military presence in that country," Helvey said.

"At the same time, we work closely with the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and with our allies and partners to maintain counterterrorism capabilities in the region sufficient to ensure that Afghanistan cannot again become a safe haven for terrorists," he added.

But a member of the US House of Representatives said that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
will fight until they take the power by force.

"Since May 1st, Taliban has been crystal clear about their intentions. They have launched a new offensive targeting coalition forces, Afghan soldiers and innocent civilians. On Saturday, the Taliban bombed a girls school in Kabul, killing over 50 people, most of them maiden of tender yearss. Make no mistake, they will fight until they control that country again," said Mike Rogers, a member of the US House of Representatives.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie was cracking himself up, but nobody else seemed to be getting the non-stop jokes...
The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

has reported that western spy agencies are evaluating and courting regional leaders outside the Afghan government who might be able to provide intelligence about terrorist threats long after US forces withdraw, according to current and former American, European and Afghan officials.

Ahmad Massoud, the son of Afghanistan’s National Hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, is one of the names in the report among new allies for US in the country after the troops withdrawal.

"Among the candidates being considered today for intelligence gathering is the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the famed Afghan fighter who led fighters against the Soviets in the 1980s and then against the Taliban as head of the Northern Alliance the following decade. The son — Ahmad Massoud, 32 — has spent the last few years trying to revive the work of his father by assembling a coalition of militias to defend Afghanistan’s north," wrote the report.
Way to paint a target on the man’s back, guys, and show that you are not to be trusted with information.
Based on the report, top CIA officials, including William J. Burns, the agency’s director, have acknowledged that they are looking for new ways to collect information in Afghanistan once American forces are withdrawn, and their ability to gather information on terrorist activity is diminished.

Washington is more divided, and some government analysts do not think Massoud would be able to build an effective coalition.

But in the New York Times report it was writthen whether the new allies were aimed to fight the Taliban in the future.

UK Sanctions Libyan 'Al-Kaniyat' Militia
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Britannia on Thursday imposed sanctions against Libya's Kaniyat militia, saying those who breached international law in Libya would have to face consequences.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the Kaniyat militia had overseen a five-year reign of terror until 2020, torturing and murdering innocent people, according to Rooters.

"The UK has today imposed asset freezes and travel bans on the militia group and its two leaders. We will hold them accountable for these atrocities," Raab said on Twitter.

Last year, the United States unilaterally blacklisted the militia and its leader after Russia prevented a UN Security Council committee from imposing sanctions over human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
abuses by the group.

The Kaniyat, headed by members of the al-Kani family, was allied to the Libyan National Army and helped it mount a failed 14-month assault on Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
that began in April 2019.

"These new sanctions send a clear message that those responsible for serious human rights violations or breaches of international humanitarian law in Libya will face consequences," said Britannia's Middle East minister James Cleverly.

"The persistent climate of impunity in Libya must be addressed and justice provided for the victims."

Europe
Italy: Matteo Salvini avoids migrant kidnap trial
[DW] The far-right politician had faced allegations of kidnapping after refusing to let a group of migrants colonists disembark from a ship.
...in 2019, when he was interior minister.
But his legal battles are not over yet.

Matteo Salvini, the head of Italia's right-wing League party, should not stand trial on charges he kidnapped a group of migrants colonists at sea, a judge in the Sicilian city of Catania ruled on Friday.

The case centered on an incident in July 2019, when Salvini stopped over 100 largely Sudanese migrants colonists aboard the Gregoretti coasties ship from disembarking for six days. During that t, there was an outbreak of scabies and a suspected case of tuberculosis.

The migrants colonists were eventually allowed to leave the boat after Italia brokered a deal with other EU states.

Salvini, who was Italia's interior minister at the time of the incident, stopped the migrants colonists from leaving the ship under his so-called "closed ports" policy. He argued it was necessary to protect the country amid a surge of migrants colonists arriving on Italia's shores.

Following the incident, Italia's Senate voted in 2020 to strip the politician of his parliamentary immunity, paving the way for the trial.

But prosecutors in Catania had asked the judge not to send Salvini to trial. They argued his decision did not violate international treaties and was not to be considered a kidnapping.

After leaving court on Friday, Salvini said the ruling shows that "a minister who defended the dignity and the borders of Italia is a minister who simply did his duty."

ANOTHER LEGAL BATTLE FOR SALVINI
Salvini's legal battles about his "closed ports" policy are not over. He faces another trial in September in a separate but similar case.

In Palermo, he is charged with kidnapping and abuse of office for refusing to allow 164 migrants colonists off the rescue ship operated by Spanish charity Open Arms for six days in August 2019.

"If there was no kidnapping found in Catania, I don't know why there should be any in Palermo," said Salvini.

He could face up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

Erbil, Baghdad agree on joint deployment to combat ISIS threat: Peshmerga ministry

(ISIS) forces of Evil exploit the absence of both Iraqi and Kurdish forces, according to an official from the Peshmerga ministry.

"There will be joint deployment of forces in the disputed areas to fill the security void," Jabar Yawar, secretary-general of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, told Rudaw English on Friday.

ISIS forces of Evil operate in the disputed areas, regions that both Erbil and Baghdad claim as their own. A "historic distrust and competition" between Erbil and Baghdad has created a security gap that ISIS forces of Evil have "successfully exploited," the Pentagon stated in a report earlier this month.

In some areas, this security gap is up to 40 kilometres wide, according to Peshmerga Brig. Gen. Dler Shko Rashid, and ISIS forces of Evil are gaining strength there, carrying out deadly attacks on Kurdish and Iraqi forces and civilians.

The new cooperation agreement came after meetings between Kurdish and Iraqi leadership and military officials in both capitals. Yawar and Jamal Imniki, chief of staff at the Peshmerga ministry, met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Baghdad on May 2.

Iraq PM Orders Probe Into Reported Clash in Basra
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Thursday ordered an investigation committee to probe a reported clash between Iraqi security forces and an armed group in the southern city of Basra.

On Wednesday night, media outlets quoted commander of Basra Operations Maj. Gen. Akram Saddam as saying that there was an exchange of fire at the Presidential Palaces between a special security force and an armed faction.

Following the news, a statement of the Security Media Cell (SMC) said that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi, instructed dispatching an investigation committee to Basra governorate.

For its part, the Basra Operations Command denied media reports about a statement made by Saddam regarding the armed skirmishes. "We at the Basra Operations Command headquarters deny these media leaks," the leadership said in a statement.

It added that the Operations Commander has not made any statement to a media outlet.

Later on Thursday, Iraq’s Nina news agency said that Kadhimi dismissed Saddam, replacing him with Major General Ali Al-Majidi.

Iraqi Government Pledges to Protect Diplomatic Missions
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The Iraqi government on Thursday pledged to protect diplomatic missions, a few days after an attack on Iran’s consulate in the southern city of Karbala.

The government said it rejects and condemns any act that would destabilize diplomatic missions in Iraq.

Last Sunday, Iraqi protestors gathered outside the Iranian consulate in Karbala, burning tires, according to local media reports.

Protesters accused Iranian-linked militias of standing behind the liquidation of Iraqi activist Ihab Jawad al-Wazni, who was killed by assailants outside his home in Karbala.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said: "The Iraqi government renews its commitment to the security and safety of diplomatic missions operating in Iraq, and to adopt all means to facilitate their work, in accordance with what is stipulated in international agreements."

This is not the first time that protesters attack the Iranian consulate in Karbala. In 2019, dozens of Iraqi protesters attacked the consulate amid nationwide anti-government protests.

Friday: Turkey's Erdogan says UN must act to halt Gaza conflict as Israel responds to Gaza rockets
[JPost] Oh Yaaassss, let the Blue Helmets enforce the Hudna?
President Tayyip Erdogan called on the United Nations and Muslim countries on Friday to halt the worst fighting between Israel and Gaza militants in years, saying Turkey would support any UN initiative to end the violence.

Repeating accusations that Israel's actions in Jerusalem and Gaza showed it to be a "terrorist state", Erdogan said he had discussed the conflict with the leaders or governments of 19 countries.

"We invite every state and every institution, regardless of their faith and origin, to act as soon as possible against Israel's attacks," Erdogan said in a televised address.

Israel pummeled Gaza with artillery fire and air strikes on Friday, killing 13 people including three children, local health officials said, as it targeted Palestinian militant tunnels to try to stop persistent rocket attacks on Israeli towns.

At least 122 people, including 51 women and children, have been killed in several days of strikes on Gaza, Palestinian medical officials say. Eight people have been killed in Israel.

Gaza's ruling Hamas group launched the rocket attacks at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in retaliation for Israeli police clashes with Palestinians near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

"It is imperative that the UN Security Council rapidly take steps to ensure peace and tranquility in Jerusalem," Erdogan said.

The company, which supplies Lebanon with 370 megawatts (MW) or the equivalent of about a quarter of the country's current supply, had told the government this week that it would have to take the step if there were no moves to reach a settlement.

The company said in a statement it was shutting down the power supply on Friday, and a source familiar with the situation said the measure was taken around 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) as fuel on the vessels had run down.

Lebanon has been without a functioning government since August, with politicians deadlocked or complacent as the country hurtles toward total collapse. Fuel supplies are running out, leaving the country at risk of plunging into total darkness as power stations and generators run dry.

Rouhani Says Shalamcheh-Basra Railway to Connect Iran to Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
...Iran's moderate president, which he is, relative to his predecessor, which doesn't mean he's anything but a puppet of the nearest holy man...
has promised to connect Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
to Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean through the Shalamcheh-Basra railway.

"Iran's Khorramshahr, Abadan, and Shalamcheh are located in a very important strategic area," said Rouhani during a video conference on Thursday.

"Per the agreement made with the Iraqi government on connecting Shalamcheh to Basra, we will be able to witness a fundamental change in this region," he added.

"This will be a very big change and Iran's railway will be connected to Iraq and Syria, and in fact to the Mediterranean, which is very important," Rouhani stressed.

During his visit to Damascus on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif announced opening a consulate in Aleppo, as approved by the Syrian President to improve trade and economic ties between both countries.

According to SANA news agency, the two figures discussed bilateral relations and the ongoing coordination and consultation at all levels. They further tackled means of bolstering joint cooperation in various fields to serve both countries’ interests.

Sources revealed that establishing a railway link from Iran to the Mediterranean falls under the recently signed MoU between Iran and China.

The deal encourages Chinese investments in free trade zones and railways, in addition to highway road construction.

It also seeks to establish a joint industrial or services project in the third world country in order to contribute to the reconstruction in the region, including that in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.

Makhlouf Says 'Miracle Solution' Underway for Syria Crisis
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Rami Makhlouf, Syrian business tycoon and maternal cousin of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
, predicted on Thursday that a "miracle" settlement will soon lift Syria out of the chaos and devastation brought about by over a decade of civil war.

"The important thing today is to inform the Syrians of this message. The solution would be a miracle. How? What is the method? This is something I will keep to myself," said Makhlouf in a video he posted on Facebook.

Branding his statements as "good news for Syrians," Makhlouf said the solution will be "comprehensive, reached in the next few months and miraculous in the sense that all Syrians will support it."

He voiced hope that the solution he is heralding is "real and would spell the end of suffering for Syrians."

Makhlouf, in this video, avoided mentioning Assad and war profiteers, both of whom were at the center of the businessman’s more critical videos and posts on social media.

Makhlouf pled for the regime, namely his cousin, intervening to stop war-exploiting racketeers who raided one of his offices, stole important documents and used fraud and forgery to seize some of his assets.

Moreover, Makhlouf’s mobile network carrier, Syriatel, was placed under judicial custody in 2020.

The decision regarding Syriatel, one of only two carriers in the country, was taken to "guarantee the rights of the public treasury and the rights of the shareholders in the company", Syria’s administrative court wrote on Facebook.

Makhlouf called the asset seizure illegal and an attempt by the government to take the company away from him.

A court then placed a travel ban on Makhlouf, pending settlement of the dispute.
