Congressman and former CIA agent Hurd: Dems don't understand how classified information works
[HOT AIR] One of the highlights of Thursday’s House Oversight Committee hearing featuring FBI Director James Comey was the five minute questioning at the hands of Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX).

It was an unequivocal smack-down of the Democrats on his committee and of Director Comey’s logic (or lack thereof) involved in his decision to not pursue charges against Hillary Clinton.

Reaction to Hurd’s performance was overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Houston police shoot dead black man pointing a gun in street
[Reuters] Two Houston police officers fatally shot an African-American man who pointed a gun at them despite their commands that he lower his weapon, authorities said on Saturday, two days after five Dallas policemen were slain by a black military veteran.

The two Houston officers, both Hispanic, encountered a man standing in the middle of a street with a revolver around 12:40 a.m. while on a routine patrol, police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said.

The officers exited their patrol vehicle to speak to the man, who initially had the firearm pointed to the sky. The officers ordered him to lower the weapon, Silva said.

"He instead deliberately and slowly lowers his arm and allows it to come to a stop at his waist," Silva said. "Now the gun is pointed directly at officers."

Fearing for their safety and for nearby witnesses, both officers discharged their weapons, striking the man, she said. The man's motive remains unknown.

The suspect, who did not fire his gun, died at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

The incident unfolded after police came under fire in at least three states on Thursday and Friday, as protests over police use of force against black people escalated around the country.

The charges against Florida congresswoman Corrine Brown, explained
[WAPO] A longtime Democratic congresswoman from Florida was indicted Friday on charges she and her chief of staff allegedly set up a fake nonprofit they used as their "personal slush fund."
It's like the Clinton Foundation but on a smaller scale and without the protection...
The 24-count indictment is a stunning piece of news, though not wholly unexpected -- she was mysteriously served a subpoena in January while eating at a Jacksonville barbecue restaurant, there was already a federal investigation into the nonprofit in question, and the House Ethics Committee had set up an investigation related to her campaign finance and commercial dealings as well.

Neither Brown nor her staff has commented on the charges. She is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
Brown exhibited no intent to defraud. I blame her staff.
The indictment could shake up her reelection campaign, where she's in one of the toughest primary fights of her two-decade political career in a newly redrawn district. Here's what we know so far:

First, a little about Corrine Brown: She's been in public service since the 1980s, first serving in the Florida state legislature and then coming to Congress in 1993. She currently represents the Jacksonville area and is one of the first three African Americans to represent the state in Congress since Reconstruction, according to the Associated Press.

Tennessee shooter targeted white victims, similar to Dallas ambush
BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released the name of the suspect behind Thursday morning's random shooting in Bristol, TN that claimed the life of an area newspaper carrier and injured three others, including a local police officer.

The TBI says 37-year-old Lakeem Keon Scott was armed with at least two weapons, an automatic-style rifle,
Likely not an automatic, but semi-automatic, and a reporter even in Tennessee doesn't know the difference...
a pistol and a large amount of ammunition, reports CBS statation WJHL in Tennessee.

Preliminary findings indicate Scott may have targeted people and officers after being troubled by recent events involving African-Americans and law enforcement officers in other parts of the country.

Investigators spoke with Scott Friday morning.
Did they speak to him in a Turkish way with mustache wax and truncheons, or did they speak to him in a RAB way, in which we'll be reading about him tomorrow in a banana grove cotton field?
Agents say "the work to develop a thorough understanding of his motivation for this incident remains central to the ongoing investigative work."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, and Bristol Tennessee Police Department are also assisting the TBI with this case.
Is the FBI there to help or to ensure that the crime is classified "correctly"?

Enough of the "gentle giant" reporting - this man killed an innocent lady, wounded two more entirely innocent folks and attacked law enforcement officers responding to protect the innocent. The facts are - this killer targeted white victims in order to provoke a police response in order to ambush them upon their arrival.

Gunman in vehicle shoots at Georgia officer
I'm beginning to wonder how much longer before Fred tells us mods to put these stories into 'Home Front WoT'...
ROSWELL, Ga. — A gunman in a passing vehicle who opened fire on a police officer on patrol in Georgia will likely be charged with aggravated assault on the officer, authorities said Friday. A suspect was apprehended after a short car chase and is in custody.
Aggravated assault? Was there a reason why he couldn't be charged with attempted murder?
The shooting happened in Roswell, a city just north of Atlanta, early Friday, just hours after a sniper attack killed five police officers in Dallas, and officers were already on edge, Roswell Det. Zachary Frommer said.
2015 booking photo for Victor Alonzo Mejia Nunez.
FULTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

The 21-year-old suspect in the Georgia shooting was being questioned by detectives Friday. Police do not know the motive. Asked whether the shooting might be related to the Texas attacks, Frommer said, "Nothing right now says that it is or isn't."

"I know detectives have been talking to him, but I don't know how much he's talking," Frommer said.

Though he's been speaking with investigators, "his cooperation has been limited," police said in a midmorning update on the case.

The suspect fired multiple shots, but none hit Officer Brian McKenzie or his patrol car, Frommer said. McKenzie is white, police said. The suspect's race was not immediately clear.

McKenzie is a member of the agency's drunken driving task force and was on a routine patrol when he came under attack, police said. The officer didn't immediately know whether the shots were fireworks or gunshots but quickly realized that "gunshots were coming his way," Frommer said.

The officer then chased the blue Ford Explorer with a Georgia license plate, which traveled through a shopping center at one point before striking a curb and median and damaging one of its tires, Frommer said. The suspect was then taken into custody.

McKenzie "jumped right into action and did a great job chasing this guy down and catching him," Frommer said.

Investigators later determined the Explorer had been stolen, police said.

Charges will likely include aggravated assault on a police officer, methamphetamine possession, reckless driving and fleeing and eluding, along with charges relating to the stolen Explorer.

Roswell is about 20 miles north of Atlanta.

Conservative blogger Michael Strickland arrested after drawing gun at BLM protest
[Wash Times] A conservative blogger who says he feared for his life during a Black Lives Matter protest Thursday night in Portland, Oregon, has been arrested after he briefly drew a handgun.

The man, identified by police as 36-year-old Michael Strickland, was at the demonstration near Pioneer Square taking pictures when he got into an argument with protesters, reported a local Fox News affiliate, which caught part of the incident on video.

Mr. Strickland pulled out a gun and held it out in front of him for a moment before putting it back in his waistband, Fox reported.

Mr. Strickland, a conservative activist who contributes to the Progressives Today blog, according to the Portland Tribune, later explained his side of the story.

"What happened was there were about 10 or 12 people that surrounded me," he told Fox. "They started pushing and shoving me. They were using their flag staffs as weapons. I’m backing up, they kept coming towards me. They kept coming towards me. That’s why I drew. ... I was outnumbered, they were pushing and shoving me. They were using their flag staffs as weapons. I was backing up, they kept coming towards me. I feared for my life because I was outnumbered and they had weapons."

Another video uploaded to YouTube by the Willamette Week shows protesters following Mr. Strickland as he backs away from them. No one is seen putting their hands or other objects on him before he pulls a gun out of a holster on his right hip and points it excitedly at several people in the crowd. He holds the gun up for about 10 seconds before re-holstering the weapon.

#4  How was his judgement faulty?
He purposely put himself in a dangerous situation (probably with the intent of provoking a response.) He brought out the gun when he probably should not have used it, and almost certainly could not have done so effectively. If he HAD used it, the excrement would really have flown.

Economy
Oil back under $50 a barrel amid concerns
Global oil prices dropped over the week, losing sight of the key $50 dollar level, as worries about a supply glut and weak economic growth took oil to two-month lows.

Oil enjoyed a modest recovery on July 8 as bargain-hunters swooped in after prices tanked the previous day in response to U.S. commercial inventories falling by less than expected, indicating softer demand in the world’s top oil-consuming economy.

A surprisingly strong jobs report from the U.S. strongly lifted stock markets, but gave oil only a modest boost.

The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate and Brent both gained around one percent on the day, trading at $45.59 and $46.85, respectively, in the late European afternoon on July 8. This, however, barely made a dent in the week’s decline, which took oil by around six percent lower from its level of over $50 a week ago.

World markets are still grappling with the aftermath of Britain’s EU exit vote and its impact on the world economy. Economic weakness translates into less demand for oil. Following the shock vote, the dollar rose, making oil more expensive for countries paying in other currencies.

CLE changing RNC security plan following shootings of Dallas police
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams on Friday said that the city would be making changes to its security plan for the Republican National Convention following the sniper killings of five police officers after a protest in Dallas.

Williams declined to discuss the changes in detail...The announcement also comes just 10 days before the city is set to host tens of thousands of dignitaries and rioters protesters.

The city has repeatedly fired back against accusations that it's not prepared, and news of police departments around the country backing out of sending [sic - this sentence was not completed in the source article. Police departments outside of CLE had planned to loan staff for the duration of the convention].

The Franklin County [Ohio] sheriff said Friday that it would not be sending any deputies to help with security.

The U.S. Secret Service and the city of Cleveland have not answered Beacon Journal questions about whether security levels are sufficient, or below original estimates. Cleveland police and city officials have publicly said 500 local law enforcement and 2,700 visiting officers from across the state will handle security for 50,000 delegates, their families and media.

M4 carbine upgraded to M4A1
[PM] A new U.S. Army video shows how today's standard infantry weapon, the M4 carbine, is being updated to perform better on the battlefield. The Army is gradually converting its entire inventory of M4s to the improved M4A1 standard.

The M4 carbine is the standard issue weapon for the U.S. Army. Introduced in the early 2000s, the rifle has performed well in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a 2006 report prepared for the Pentagon, 89 percent of soldiers polled said they were satisfied with the performance of the weapon, the highest rating for all Army small arms.
