Rest in peace, coach
Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips Jr., who spent half his adult life as a football coach and every waking moment as the personification of all things Texan, died Friday at his ranch in Goliad.
Phillips was three weeks past his 90th birthday and more than three decades removed from his heyday as head coach of the Oilers from 1975 through 1980. But he will be remembered as the personification of a time, a place and a team that remains deep in the hearts of everyone who saw them play.

The stuff is volatile. The typical extremely low humidity in NM keeps dust particles airborne, especially if static electricity is also generated. I once grew habaneros in my back yard, made the mistake of taking a ripe one into the kitchen & cutting it in half. Everyone inside soon had eye irritation & started coughing. We had to evacuate the house and air it out. My hands felt like they'd been burned, for days afterward. I did not even chop the habanero, just split it in half.
So, the government shutdown ended this week with only one recorded fatality, at the hands of the Capital Hill Police when a Tea party member single mom ran her car into barricades in front of the White House.
Let the death of Miriam Carey remind you that not even an unarmed woman will stop the government from spending your life savings. Well done, Capital Hill cops. Take a well deserved vacation.

So when we have officials pledging to sign a weapons ban, a government which wants to arm drug cartels and al-quaeda, I take it quite seriously, especially since the law yars have corrupted language so badly that it is ok to tax not-trade.
[Al Ahram] Æthiopia unveiled Friday the first phase of a space exploration programme, which includes East Africa's largest observatory designed to promote astronomy research in the region.
"The optical astronomical telescope is mainly intended for astronomy and astrophysics observation research," said observatory director Solomon Belay.
The observatory, which will formally be opened on Saturday, boasts two telescopes, each one metre (over three feet) wide, to see "extra planets, different types of stars, the Milky Way, and deep galaxies," Solomon added.
The 3.4 million dollar (2.5 million euro) observatory, run by the Æthiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), is funded by Æthiopian-Saudi business tycoon Mohammed Alamoudi.
The observatory, 3,200 metres (10,500 feet) above sea level in the lush Entoto mountains on the outskirts of the Æthiopian capital Addis Ababa, is an ideal location because of its minimal cloud cover, moderate winds and low humidity, experts said.
When established in 2004, ESSS was labelled as the "Crazy People's Club", according to the group, but has gained credibility in the past decade with astronomy courses introduced at universities and winning increased political support.
The Æthiopian government is set to launch a space policy in coming years.
Solomon said the group originally faced sceptics in Æthiopia and abroad, who questioned whether space exploration was a wise use of resources in one of Africa's poorest economies, plagued in the past by chronic famine and unrest.
But Solomon said promoting science is key to the development in Æthiopia, today one of Africa's fastest growing economies largely based on agriculture.

Swiss customs agents have seized one million fake tablets of anti-anxiety drug Xanax at the Zurich airport, which were destined for Egypt, authorities said Friday.
This explains so, so much...
The counterfeit tablets, packed in four crates and weighing 400 kg, had originated in China, according to Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products.
"Analyses in the Swissmedic laboratory revealed that the drugs, which are prescribed to treat symptoms of acute anxiety, contained no active ingredients whatsoever," Swissmedic said in a statement. "According to experts, the drugs would be unrecognisable as counterfeits at a first glance."
Xanax is a drug manufactured by Pfizer used to treat severe anxiety or panic disorder. The fake tablets were destroyed.
Developing countries such as Egypt are a massive market for counterfeit medications, a massive trade worth billions of dollars that is often deadly. In parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America, fraudulent medicines are thought to amount to as much as 30 per cent of the market, according to the UN drug agency.

[An Nahar] A United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... helicopter came under fire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material... on Friday, a U.N. source said, the second such incident in a week.
"Two helicopters left on reconnaissance missions this morning ... the pilots of one of the helicopters felt some impacts on the cockpit ... and landed" to inspect the damage, a source close to Monusco, the U.N. peacekeeping mission in DR Congo, told Agence La Belle France Presse.
The incident took place some 15 kilometres (10 miles) north of Goma, capital of North Kivu province, which has been in turmoil since warfare ravaged the country from 1996 to 2003.
There were no injuries and the helicopter was able to return to base.
Last week, Congolese M23 rebels shot at a U.N. helicopter but no one was injured.
The M23 was founded by former Tutsi rebels who were incorporated into the Congolese army under a 2009 peace deal.
Complaining the deal was never fully implemented, they mutinied in April 2012, turning their guns on their former comrades and launching the latest rebellion to ravage DR Congo's mineral-rich and conflict-prone east.
A front man for the rebels, Vianney Kazarama, denied that the M23 was behind the attack.
"This morning, the M23 did not fire and did not want to fire on Monusco," said Kazarama, indicating that the shots came from the Congolese army (FARDC).
But Lieutenant-Colonel Olivier Hamuli, a front man for the army in North Kivu, hit back, saying: "Monoscu is a partner of the FARDC and we are together on the ground. It's the M23 which shot," said Hamuli.

Mykola Rudkovskyi of the ruling Regions Party submitted the bill for amendments to Ukraine's criminal code on the legal regulation of allowing convicts to go abroad for treatment.
It was not immediately clear when the Verkhovna Rada parliament would debate the bill.
According to the draft, the bill says that a decision to treat convicts abroad, as well as the terms and conditions, should be taken by a court. The new rules would apply to all convicts, not just Tymoshenko.
After the expiration of the period specified by the court for treatment abroad, the convict should return to Ukraine to continue serving the sentence, the bill says.
In Tymoshenko's case, this would will leave her unable to take part in presidential polls in 2015.

[An Nahar] Beirut ranked 20 in the list of the world's top tourist destinations, the Ministry of Tourism announced on Thursday.
"Beirut came before Paris, Melbourne, Venice and Barcelona on the list of tourism magazine Conde Nast Traveler," the ministry said in a released statement, noting that the magazine's annual list is based on "its readers' choices."
1.3 million readers participated in this year's vote, according to the same source.
In its feature, the international publication described Beirut as "Paris of the Middle East."
"Beirut has a lot to offer to tourists such as the best restaurants and the most exclusive clubs in the world," it said.
