Johnny Clegg, anti-apartheid musician in South Africa, is dood
JOHANNESBURG (AP) ‐ Johnny Clegg, a South African musician who performed in defiance of racial barriers imposed under the country’s apartheid system decades ago and celebrated its new democracy under Nelson Mandela, died Tuesday. He was 66 and had pancreatic cancer.

The Grammy-nominated and British-born singer sometimes called the "White Zulu" died peacefully at home in Johannesburg with his family there, according to Clegg’s manager, Roddy Quin.

"He fought it to the last second," Quin told the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Clegg’s multi-racial bands during South Africa’s white minority rule attracted an international following. He crafted hits inspired by Zulu and township harmonies, as well as folk music and other influences.

South Africa’s government said in a statement that "his music had the ability to unite people across the races .... Clegg has made an indelible mark in the music industry and the hearts of the people."

One of his best-known songs was "Asimbonanga," which means "We’ve never seen him" in Zulu. It refers to South Africans during apartheid when images of the then-imprisoned Mandela were banned. Mandela was released in 1990 after 27 years in prison and became South Africa’s first black president in all-race elections four years later.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Community pool closed because Mad Crapper someone kept pooping in it
[FOX5NY] The Buckingham Recreational Facilities Association has a public service announcement for its visitors: Stop pooping in its pool.

In a notice posted Friday afternoon, the association's president said the community pool had to be closed because "someone has been defecating in the pool." And yes, they believe it was on purpose.

"Due to the frequency over the past week, we believe this is intentional," read the statement.

The neighborhood pool is in Macomb Township, located at 50483 Crusader Dr. near 23 Mile Road.

In response to the repeated offense, the board's president said they are reviewing attendance logs and recorded videos. "Rest assured, that we are following published guidelines to restore the pool to a safe and sanitary condition."

Serial pooping problems have plagued Michigan communities in the past. In 2014, the Ypsilanti Police Department made contact with an individual who had been pooping on public park slides.

To lock down any chance of more feces showing up in its pool, the Buckingham recreational group said it has also hired a second pool attendant will oversee duties at the pool. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the recent hire means the annual carnival put on by the association will be canceled.

Britain
Women in UK twice as likely as men to lose their jobs to robots
[NYPOST] Women are twice as likely to lose their jobs to robots as men are, according to a new report.

The study, conducted by London think tank IPPR, found that nearly two thirds (64%) of British workers in industries at high risk from automation are women. That is because women are more likely to work in retail and administrative jobs that could be done by machines.

In total, one in 10 female workers are at high risk of being squeezed out of their jobs by robots, IPPR concluded. In contrast, just four percent of male workers are in the danger zone.

But that doesn’t mean automation should be stopped. Instead, Carys Roberts, chief economist at IPPR and lead author of the report, said the government should do more to enable females to pursue high-skilled tech jobs.

"The Government ‐ and the new Prime Minister ‐ needs to engage fully with business and industry to accelerate automation across the UK economy, with all the advantages that will bring," Roberts said.

"But the new PM needs to enable working women to lead that process so that they are not further disadvantaged in the workplace. He will also need to act to ensure that women both young and older are able to access the good new jobs of the future, and share fully in the benefits these changes will bring."

Opposition leaders lavished billions on themselves under security, camp office expenses: Murad Saeed
[DAWN] Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed on Tuesday slammed the "kingly" spending of national wealth by past public office holders on the pretext of setting up camp offices, security arrangements and entertainment.

Before he began discussing the figures, Saeed said that it was important to provide the context under which such lavish expenditures were made.

"In Thar, as seen in the report submitted to the Supreme Court, each year, there are more than 500 children who are dying due to hunger and poverty. The health conditions are such in the chief minister's constituency, that one is hard pressed to find an ambulance to carry the injured to a hospital when a blast occurs.

"The availability of clean drinking water is an issue most prominent in Sindh and Punjab. Data from State Bank of Pakistain (SBP) and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) shows that Sindh is the most poverty-stricken province followed by South Punjab," he said as he set the stage to provide the contrast which followed.

"We will begin with Yousuf Raza Gillani. He had five camp offices, three in Lahore and two in Multan
...Home of the Multan Sultans...
and he spent Rs245 million on these."

"We then move on to Zardari, who has proved very bhari (costly) for the nation. His two camp offices ‐ one in Larkana where he has a house, and one in Naudero ‐ as well as his security arrangements resulted in the wastage of over Rs3.164 billion of tax payers' money over 2013-2018 when he was not even president of the country."

He said that Zardari had had 246 cars on the pretext of security in 2015, whereas in 2016 he had fled the country, in 2017 he had 164 cars, and in 2018 he had 158 cars.

Saeed said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
had wasted $460,000 on a single visit to the United States in 2015 and spent 327,000 pounds from the public exchequer on his treatment in the United Kingdom.

Similarly, over Rs4,310m from the public kitty was spent to provide security to a disqualified Nawaz Sharif in Riawind when it was declared a camp office by former Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

chief minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Saeed said Shehbaz had spent Rs8.726bn on his security as chief minister. He also wasted Rs1.3bn by using the special plane of prime minster 526 times, despite having his own helicopter.

Man gets jail term, fine for marriage sans wife’s consent
[DAWN] A judicial magistrate has handed down 11-month jail term to a man and imposed Rs250,000 fine on him for contracting second marriage without seeking mandatory permission from his first wife.

Ms Shamim of Ichhra filed a complaint through her counsel, pleading that her husband Muhammad Rashid contracted second marriage without her consent required under section 6 of the Moslem Family Law Ordinance 1961.

The counsel asked the court to punish the man under the law for committing a crime. He also produced witnesses and documentary evidence to prove the offence of the respondent.

The magistrate in his decision observed that verbal and documentary evidence presented by the complainant established that the offense was committed under the law.

Therefore, he handed down 11-month imprisonment to the respondent, with Rs250,000 fine.

The police arrested the man soon after his conviction and shifted him to jail.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
the complainant woman expressed dissatisfaction over the quantum of the punishment awarded to her husband. She told media that her husband deserved more imprisonment for the crime he committed.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Prime Minister Netanyahu makes history as Israel's longest-serving leader
JERUSALEM (AP) ‐ As Benjamin Netanyahu becomes Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, he is solidifying his place as the country’s greatest political survivor and the most dominant force in Israeli politics in his generation.

He has persevered through scandals, crises and conflicts, winning election after election even as the country grows more bitterly polarized. His supporters credit him with keeping Israel safe and prosperous, maintaining its Jewish character and boosting its standing internationally.

His opponents, with equally visceral emotion, claim he has dashed hopes for peace with the Palestinians, torn society apart with vicious attacks on minority Arabs and left-wing opponents, and infused politics with a culture of corruption.

But as the longevity of his 13-year rule is set to surpass that of Israel’s founding father David Ben-Gurion on July 20, all agree Netanyahu has left a permanent imprint on Israel.

"He thinks that he is the right guy in the right place. That he is the one who will save Israel and lead Israel to a safe haven," said Aviv Bushinsky, a former Netanyahu aide. Israelis think that "things are good, so why should we change a winning horse," he added.

Just as he is about to cross a milestone, Netanyahu faces perhaps his greatest political challenge yet. After failing to form a parliamentary majority following April elections, the country is holding a repeat vote on Sept. 17. The following month, he faces a hearing with Israel’s attorney general, who has recommended indicting Netanyahu on corruption charges. If formal charges are filed, Netanyahu could be forced to step aside.

Educators work to combat racism, whiteness in math
h/t Instapundit
[CollegeFix] "Math equity" doesn’t mean 1 + 1 = 2.

The term refers to the growing insistence among educators that teaching math in the classroom comes with some inherently biased methodology that must be addressed.

Proponents of "math equity" also stress the importance of social justice issues such as race, diversity and gender in math education ‐ a trend that’s catching on.

More professors and educators are tweeting under the hashtag #MathEquity to share strategies on the topic, and webinars and other pedagogical sessions on it abound.

"Equity-based mathematics teaching requires more than implementing new curriculum or using specific practices because it involves taking a stand for what is right," the website for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics states.

"It requires mathematics teachers to reflect on their own identity, positions, and beliefs in regards to racist and sorting-based mechanisms. It involves noticing students, learning about the worlds they live in, and building mathematics that comes from these worlds. And finally, it involves engaging other educators in partnerships to build equity-oriented communities."

The council did not respond to requests from The College Fix for comment.

A 2018 column in Medium on math equity argues math equity must go beyond classroom teaching strategies. It argued math education is biased in favor of a Western narrative.

"The larger problem is that there are no readily recognizable names of non-white math leaders who are fluent in content and/or pedagogy," writes Sunil Singh, who goes on to point out most celebrated mathematicians in the classroom are white: Pythagoras. Euclid. Descartes. Gauss. Newton.

"Every student of mathematics will come across the zero and the negative sign," he states. "Yet, there is very rarely a mention of Brahmagupta in classes."

" ... Calculus was a monumental achievement and deserves to have authorship recognized with Newton. But more students encounter the work of Brahmagupta than Newton. But, what if it wasn’t Newton that discovered calculus? What if it was Japanese scholar Seki Takakazu? We will never know. But the bigger idea is why couldn’t this be a possibility? Do we not want to be dislodged from the entrenched Western narrative?"

Meanwhile, there have been numerous online sessions and webinars to train teachers to adapt to an equity-based approach to math.

A recent online chat session titled "Diversity & Inclusion: Math ED Spaces" discussed on Twitter looked at a student’s sense of belonging and racial diversity in math education, according to a thread by one of the session’s participants.

"We heard ... about creating a sense of belonging for students & teachers of color prompting us to become self-reflective of our work & take action," tweeted Naomi Jessup, assistant professor of mathematics education at Georgia State University.

Jessup did not respond to The College Fix’s requests for comment.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has also hosted math equity webinars.

In one 2018 webinar titled "Developing Social Justice Mathematics Activists in Pre-K-Grade 5," its online description states that "when paired with issues of fairness, mathematics becomes a social justice tool that empowers students to mathematically recognize and address oppression they see in their own world."

Some concepts of math equity are not all rooted in identity politics.

A recent tweet from Cathery Yeh, assistant professor of education at Chapman University, listed strategies for math equity on a whiteboard from a more objective view of student academic success, with ideas such as "give students time to think on their own" and "provide students with many different kinds of tools to help them discover their strategy or thinking."

Other tweets on her account, however, favor math equity as a social justice tool.

#1  We will never know. But the bigger idea is why couldn’t this be a possibility?

Wow. Possibility based sciences now. Sophistry married to exactitude produces zero applicability. So what if Brahma-fuckin'-Gupta found the zero ? Someone else had to popularize it for use in equations. The chinese began that in the 6th century when they put it to use in calculating per capita income, and much later an Arab took the idea west. It wasn't until it could be used in anything except counting bags of paddy or writing astrology charts, that the fucking thing came to be of use to someone. How does it matter whether a white guy did it or a brown or yellow one ? It's history, not mathematics. Now it seems it's also political science. Are people really going to elevate/reduce everything from simple calculus to walking on the moon to racial politics now ?

#6  Goddamn ! This is madness ! Have you guys actually seen what it entails ? I'm seeing this for the first time.

Characteristics of Equity Maths.

I thought it was just opportunist revisionists seeking petty career advancement by signalling 'wokeness', gaslighting an innocent generation with bilge. It's a neat plan to actually impair the ability of teachers to effectively communicate in a mathematics class, and to reverse all advancement made in western education so far, especial in STEM. I suppose math must be the only subject where clear and terse dialogue takes place, and it cannot be exploited like other subjects, say civics or literature.

Sampler : "Research has recently shown something stunning—when students make a mistake in math, their brain grows, synapses fire, and connections are made; when they do the work correctly, there is no brain growth"
