20 People Shot over Weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot's Chicago
[Breitbart] Twenty people were shot, one fatally, over the weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the weekend’s fatality occurred Sunday just before 7:30 p.m. in the South Side neighborhood of Avalon Park.

The 51-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle "in the 1600 block of East 83rd Street" when someone shot him in the head. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.
He'll still vote Democrat
ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times notes kids as young as 11-years-old were among those shot and injured over the weekend.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday the 11-year-old was in a vehicle "in the 400-block of West 119th Street" when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone opened fire. The boy was shot in the arm and taken to a hospital for his injuries.

On Sunday, Breitbart News observed there had been at least 42 shootings on Chicago expressways to that point in 2021. On Friday alone, one such shooting left one person dead and two people injured.

The Chicago Tribune pointed out 388 people were shot in Chicago January 1, 2021, through February 26, 2021. That is 62 more people than were shot during that same time period in 2020.

OH cops break up would-be ambush
[Fox8] Three men are facing charges after Sandusky police say they followed undercover detectives and then approached their vehicle with loaded guns.

“The detectives were in an unmarked cruiser Saturday evening when they noticed a vehicle following them,” said Sandusky Sgt. Kevin Youskievicz.

The detectives pulled over on Reese Street and the suspects parked behind them.

“I then observed Tevin Latin exit the driver’s seat of the vehicle,” Officer Darian Cook wrote in his report.

“Tevin began to approach the driver’s side of our vehicle, while holding his waistband. I exited our vehicle and drew my service weapon, upon doing so I observed Davon Brown exit the front passenger’s seat of the listed vehicle. I then observed Davon remove a silver firearm from the front of his waistband with his right hand.”

The officers ordered the suspects to drop their weapons. The three suspects fled. Brown was apprehended shortly after the incident.

“Bro, you almost got shot man,” the officer can be heard telling Brown on police body camera video. “I thought you were going to shoot me. I thought you guys were trying to draw down on us.”

The two other suspects, Tevin Latin and Deonte Latin, were arrested Monday. All three are being held in the Erie County Jail on numerous charges, including carrying a concealed weapon. Officers also confiscated four guns.

SpaceX FCC request to allow StarLink to service mobile subscribers
Full article at headline link.
[SpaceNews] SpaceX takes aim at satellite mobility operators with Starlink expansion

SpaceX is seeking regulatory permission to connect moving vehicles to its rapidly expanding Starlink constellation, branching the broadband network out of fixed homes and offices.

The company is asking the FCC for authorization similar to the blanket license it already has for up to a million end-user customer Earth stations.

David Goldman, SpaceX’s director of satellite policy, said in a regulatory filing that its Earth Stations in Motion (ESIM) equipment is “electrically identical to its previously authorized consumer user terminals but have mountings that allow them to be installed on vehicles, vessels and aircraft, which are suitable for those environments.”

#4  It takes about a year from permission to actual operating licenses Mercutio, so all is not lost. Right now, they only have the northern latitudes covered by their constellations to any degree of reliability. As they fill in further south, you will see more and more coverage available. It is simply a matter of getting the birds up and the regional ground stations hooked up. They will not be able to support mobile until after most of their fixed terrestrial is up and running.

I have a decent headwater drop on the property, so my dream of solar+water power along with a battery (tesla maybe?), plus a well and septic, and add this in for low latency high-speed bandwidth... I will finally be able to move out to my land when I retire and be c0ompletely off the physical grid. And it is in Eastern Tenn where people know better than come snooping on land that is not theirs.

My hubby takes my sultry OnlyFans pics — and our marriage is stronger than ever
Just another individual mugging for the camera.
[NYPOST] The saying goes, “Behind every great man is a woman.” But for Kelly Stark, it’s more like, “Behind every great woman’s X-rated snaps is a man.”

While his 50-hours-per-week job as an IT manager pays $250K a year, Stark’s husband has an unusual side gig: Shooting racy material of Kelly for strangers to lust over online.

“Who doesn’t want to take sexy photos of their partner?” the Phoenix, Ariz., dad told The Post. “I can do it — and have someone fund our next vacation!”

Clients of the wildly popular OnlyFans app fork over a $9.99 monthly subscription to ogle his pictures and videos of Kelly posing naked in the desert near the couple’s home, soaping up in the shower or wearing lacy underwear and toasting waffles in the kitchen.

CDC study: Face masks have negligible impact on coronavirus cases
[OAN Network] The CDC has admitted face masks do little to prevent the spread of COVID-19 amid mounting pressure to lift mask mandates across the U.S. In a new study, the CDC found face masks had a negligible impact on coronavirus numbers that didn’t exceed statistical margins of error.
The other side of this Rantburg posting, both draw completely different conclusions from the same study.
The study found that between March and December 2020, face mask orders reduced infection rates by 1.5 percent over the rolling periods of two months each. The masks were 0.5 percent effective in the first 20 days of the mandates and less than 2 percent effective after 100 days.
That's correct, but the previous media reporting assumed right-thinking people would agree that was significant enough to continue face masks forever.
The CDC added it still recommends wearing face masks, although reading between the lines it admitted such mandates do not make any statistical difference. In the meantime, some states across the nation have slowly returned to normalcy by putting an end to mask mandates.
Oh yeah, those Neanderthal thinkers.

Synthesis:

Option 1: Masks good, restaurants bad.

Option 2: Masks are not statistically significant.

Both refer to the same study, both are correct. It's a matter of degree. Sort of.

Aside from the fact that the "study" does not differentiate between the number or quality of masks, and made no distinction between outdoor and indoor dining. And the root of the study is, "Do you sick people remember doing this thing last month, before you got sick?"

Not exactly a "Gold Standard" study, is it?

Therefore, I think Option 2 is closer to "The Truth".

Ethiopia supplies weapons to Sudan rebels in Blue Nile to ‘occupy’ Kurmuk: SUNA
[AlAhram] In August 2020, Sudan signed a peace agreement with rebel groups to end 17 years of war

The Æthiopian government supplied weapons and ammunition to forces of Commander Joseph Tuka in Sudan's Blue Nile state to help them "occupy" the Sudanese Kurmuk town, Sudan’s official news agency SUNA reported on Sunday.

The Æthiopian logistics support was received by Commander Joseph Tuka, deputy head of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM—N)
...N is for North. They describe themselves as “a Sudanese national movement that seeks to change the policies of the centre in Khartoum and to build a new centre for the benefit of all Sudanese people regardless of their religion, gender or ethnicity background”, neglecting to mention that they are are at least socialist, if not outright communist. They’re based in the states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan. As of 2017 they’d split into two factions, which spent as much energy fighting each other as they did the government...
krazed killer organization, and leaders in his forces in Yabus town on 27 February, SUNA said.

Yabus lies near Sudan's borders with Æthiopia and South Sudan.

"The Æthiopian government aims to use Commander Joseph Tuka to occupy the city of Kurmuk with the support of Æthiopian artillery," SUNA said.

The agency added that the Æthiopian step "aims to disperse the efforts of the Sudanese army on the eastern front," where tensions and festivities mounted between Æthiopia and Sudan over Addis Ababa's claims of ownership on the fertile al-Fashqa region.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, the partisans of Honorius went for their knives and the partisans of Stilicho went for the doors...
Saudi Asharq News cited an unnamed official in the SPLM-N denying that the movement has received assistance from Æthiopia.

The source added, according to the private news website, that the SPLM-N is committed to the ceasefire resolution announced by its leader, Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu.

In August 2020, Sudan’s transitional government signed a historic peace agreement with the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), a coalition of rebel groups from Darfur, the Blue Nile, and Southern Kordofan that included the SPLM-N. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
al-Hilu was absent.

The agreement ended 17 years of war.

Tensions are also increasing between the two countries over Addis Ababa's intrasigence in the negotiations over the disputed Grand Æthiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which threatens Sudan's Roseires Dam.

France fells centuries-old oaks to rebuild the Notre-Dame Cathedral spire
[France24] In a former royal forest, tree surgeons on Monday began felling centuries-old oak trees which will be used to rebuild the wooden-framed spire of Notre-Dame de Paris after it was destroyed by fire.

The lead-coated spire, which for more than 150 years had defined the central Paris sky line, was consumed by the blaze in April 2019, collapsing through the stone vaulted roof to the tears and gasps of distraught onlookers.

President Emmanuel Macron announced last summer that the 96-metre (315 ft) spire would be reconstructed as originally designed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, launching the hunt for the 1,000 oaks required to build the spire and the frame of the cathedral's transept.

Canada to MI governor: keeping oil pipeline open is "non-negotiable"
[DetroitNews] The Canadian government is making waves again about Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's attempt to shut down Line 5, but this time the saber rattling is coming from a cabinet member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration.

The federal government won't let Michigan shut down the Line 5 pipeline, Canada's natural resources minister Seamus O'Regan told a parliamentary panel last week that the government won't let Whitmer close the 4-mile-long dual pipeline that runs under the Straits of Mackinac. It is part of a longer pipeline that transports oil and natural gas liquids from Canada through Wisconsin and Michigan into Sarnia, Ontario Province.

"We are fighting for Line 5 on every front and we are confident in that fight," O'Regan told a special House of Commons committee on the relationship between Canada and the United States, according to the Canadian Press.

Line 5 carries about 540,000 barrels of light crude originating in Alberta and Western Canada through Superior, Wisconsin into the Upper Peninsula, down through the Straits of Mackinac and then east to Sarnia, Ontario. It also carries natural gas liquids that serve as a propane source to the Upper Peninsula and lower Michigan after it is processed in Sarnia.

The provinces of Quebec and Ontario, which is across the river from Detroit, would lose thousands of jobs and energy if the 68-year-old pipeline were closed in the wake of Whitmer's November revocation of the pipeline's easement, officials argued. A Canadian mayor suggested it could set off Canadian trade retaliation.

Greyhound Wants COVID Tests for New Riders
[Brietbart] The president CEO of Greyhound bus company and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott are pushing back against President Joe Biden and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for their open border policies, including allowing illegal aliens inside the country without testing individuals for the coronavirus.

"Our top priority is the safety of our employees and passengers," Greyhound CEO David Leach wrote in a letter sent to DHS. "We need assurance that any detainees released by ICE have proof of a negative COVID-19 test, similar to the proof required for international airline passengers who arrive at U.S. ports of entry."
But your new riders are going all over the country to visit their friends and family!
"Greyhound already asks our customers to stay home and not travel if they are not feeling well or have been diagnosed with COVID," the letter said. "However, migrants simply do not have that choice unless the government or their sponsors house them while they quarantine."
Gonna need some more cages! Whaddabout the optics?
"Therefore, it is critical to public safety that ICE provide 100 percent assurance that no one released that can be reasonably expected to ride a Greyhound bus be infected with COVID-19 (or mixed with other potential passengers that have tested negative)," Leach said in the letter.

Leach also announced that he has requested additional financial aid from the federal government if the company is expected to transport thousands of illegal aliens around the country.
And another thing -
"We simply do not have buses and drivers ready to meet surges in demand without emergency funding," Leach said in the NBC report. "In order to properly serve immigrants coming into the southern border and traveling to their sponsor destination, Greyhound will be operating one-way moves throughout the country and in order to get the resources back (buses and drivers) to the border to continue operations, Greyhound needs funding assistance to cover the costs of repositioning buses and drivers from other parts of the country to wherever they may be needed."

#1  Greyhound might just save themselves a whole lot of trouble by ceasing to pick up passengers in the southern border area. If the feds want to let invaders in that way, why should Greyhound help them out in any way? Of course, Greyhound may not have a way to know if a potential passenger is actually a released detainee.

RocketLab announces Neutron a competitor to SpaceX's Falcon-9.
[NasaSpaceflight]
To date, Rocket Lab has successfully introduced the first dedicated small satellite launch vehicle, Electron, which CEO Peter Beck said would never be reusable. Then, the company successfully recovered a first stage. Now, Beck says Rocket Lab is ready to do something else he previously said they’d never do: build a big rocket.

The Neutron launch vehicle is a reusable, eight tons to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) rocket designed primarily to build satellite constellations. But Neutron will also be designed from the beginning to be capable of resupplying space stations in LEO and even flying crew, yet another market Beck had previously distanced himself from.

First launch site will be Wallops Island Virginia

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Assad and His Wife Test Positive for Coronavirus
[AnNahar] Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
and his wife have tested positive for the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
, the president's office said Monday, with both having only mild symptoms of the illness.

In a statement, Assad's office said the first couple did PCR tests after they experienced minor symptoms consistent with the COVID-19 illness. It said Assad, 55, and his wife Asma, who is 10 years younger and announced her recovery from breast cancer in 2019, will continue to work from home where they will isolate between two to three weeks.

Both were in "good health and in stable, pH balanced condition," it added.

Syria, which marks 10 years of war next week, has recorded nearly 16,000 virus cases in government-held parts of the country, including 1,063 deaths. But the numbers are believed to be much higher with limited amounts of PCR tests being done, particularly in areas of northern Syria outside government control.

The pandemic, which has severely tested even developed countries, has been a major challenge for Syria's health care sector, already depleted by years of conflict.

Syria began a vaccination campaign last week amid rising numbers of infection cases, but no details have been given about the process, nor have local journalists been allowed to witness the rollout. The health minister said the government procured the vaccines from a friendly country, which he declined to name.

The announcement came days after international and Israeli media reports revealed that Israel paid Russia $1.2 million to provide the Syrian government with coronavirus vaccines. It was reportedly part of a deal that secured the release of an Israeli woman held in Damascus. The terms of the clandestine trade-off negotiated by Moscow remained murky. Damascus denied it happened and Russia had no comment.

Israeli bankrolling of Syria's vaccination efforts would be an embarrassment for Assad's government, which considers Israel its main regional enemy.

It was not immediately clear if Assad, who has been in power since taking over from his late father in 2000, or any of his family members have been vaccinated.

Syria has been mired in civil war for the past 10 years since anti-government protests that began as part of Arab Spring uprisings turned to an insurgency in response to a military crackdown. A decade of fighting has resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions.

Mars Rover Landing Site Named After Sci-Fi Legend Octavia Butler
[Gizmodo] That magical spot in Jezero crater where NASA’s Perseverance rover made its historic landing last month has been named "Octavia E. Butler Landing" in honor of the late sci-fi author.

"I can think of no better person to mark this historic landing site than Octavia E. Butler, who not only grew up next door to JPL [NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory] in Pasadena, but she also inspired millions with her visions of a science-based future," Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA associate administrator for science, said in a NASA release.

Indeed, NASA got it right with this one, as Butler is a worthy choice for such a prestigious honor.

Butler, who died in 2006 at the age of 58, was the first African American woman to win the Hugo and Nebula awards and the first sci-fi writer to be honored with a MacArthur Fellowship. The acclaimed author is known for such works as the Xenogenesis trilogy and the Parable and Patternist series, in which she critiqued humanity’s hierarchical and prejudicial tendencies, especially those based on race, sex, and class.

"Butler’s protagonists embody determination and inventiveness, making her a perfect fit for the Perseverance rover mission and its theme of overcoming challenges," explained Kathryn Stack Morgan, deputy project scientist for Perseverance, in the NASA press release. "Butler inspired and influenced the planetary science community and many beyond, including those typically under-represented in STEM fields."
