-Lurid Crime Tales-
Disgraceful: Someone's Making Bomb Threats Against Target Stores, Utah LGBTQ+ Activists Quickly Offer Bad Take
[Red State] We’ve written at length about the pickle the folks running major U.S. retail chain Target seem to be in, mainly how they managed to alienate many of their loyal customers when the company decided it would be a good business decision to partner with companies that sell LGBTQ+ merchandise.Target recently removed the products from its shelves. But the issue didn’t end there, as an avalanche of complaints from LGBTQ+ activists hit Target about the items being taken down from displays.

As the Memorial Day weekend was set to begin on Friday, the company continued to reel from the backlash on both sides of the controversy.

Earlier on Saturday, our colleagues at Twitchy caught the disturbing story about a Cleveland, Ohio, television station receiving a bomb threat made against five, area Target stores,

WOIO (Cleveland 19 News) reported about the threat it received on Friday:

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) — Cleveland 19 News received a bomb threat Friday afternoon against five Target stores in the area.

The threat, received at 12:26 p.m. via email, centered around Target’s LGBTQ+ merchandise.

Immediately jumping to action, our staff made reports with each local police department as well as the Cleveland Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

It was not immediately known if the threats were legitimate, though precautions were quickly taken to ensure no one got hurt.

The threatening email was aimed at Targets in Jackson Township, Boardman, Stow, Niles, and Monaca, Penn.

But as Twitchy noted, it doesn’t appear the threats were sent by people upset with Target over the woke duds they had tried to sell: it was (allegedly) someone upset that Target had taken down the products. A producer with WOIO shared details and a screenshot of the emailed threat via his Twitters account:

#4  I think the problem they are running into is that the threats are being made by a protected class of people. This causes issues for the Feds. It’s kind of like if Ray Epps robs a store. What do you do? What is the protocol for dealing with a perpetrator that is by definition blameless?

NY man accused of shooting Kaylin Gillis in driveway blamed 'hunters,' filings show
[NYPOST] The man charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis after the car she was in accidentally drove up his upstate New York driveway initially tried to blame the shooting on hunters, according to court filings.

Kevin Monahan, 65, insisted to state police and Washington County sheriff’s deputies that he had "in bed since 8:30 p.m." — well before the April 15 slaying happened — and that "there are hunters shooting up here all the time," the Albany Times Union reported, citing county court records.

Monahan made the remarks as authorities tried coaxing him out of his home following the shooting, according to the filings.

Instead, he told police to "leave me alone," and to "get out of my yard so I can go back to bed."

The documents surfaced after Monahan was arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence.

Monahan allegedly fired twice from a 12-gauge shotgun at an SUV that Gillis, of Schuylerville, and three of her friends were traveling in.

Gunfire shuts down popular Chicago beach hours after opening for the season
[NYPOST] A reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
beach was closed hours after it opened for the summer season when shots were fired during a large brawl on Friday, according to police.

The fight broke out among a group of 80 to 100 feral children at North Avenue Beach around 1:30 p.m., police said.

During the fracas, someone pulled out a gun and fired a shot, Fox 32 reported.

Fortunately, no one was struck. A juvenile was taken into police custody.

The weapon has not been recovered, cops said.

The beach was temporarily shut down as police investigated.

Legalization Of Polygamy Was Always The Logical Consequence Of Obergefell
[Federist] If marriage is possible between any two individuals, then why not three, four, or any number of consenting adults, regardless of their sex?

* Obergefell v. Hodgess, 576 U.S. 644 (2015) (/ˈoʊbərɡəfɛl/ OH-bər-gə-fel), is a landmark case of the Supreme Court of the United States which ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.

#5  The polygamy idea is not for me. I would care less, but there seems to be a trafficking, slavery and cult aspect to much of it. The theoretical argument for legalized prostitution is similar. The argument is free will. The reality is slavery of damaged people that debases everyone related to it. Everything is aimed at the kids and family. Already, it is unwise to send kids to public school. It the countries where the slide into socialism has progressed farther, public school is mandated and uncompliant parents lose their kids.

Diversity's Blessings: Rival Somali Factions Riot, Ending Minneapolis City Council Convention
[New American] When hearing about rival Somali political factions rioting, one might assume the event occurred in Somalia, where political violence is the norm. But the mayhem in question actually was in Minneapolis, where, increasingly, being Somali is the norm. (Apparently, "Minnesota nice" hasn’t rubbed off.)

Per The Post Millennial:

A riot erupted in Minnesota during Democrat nominations for Minneapolis City Council on Saturday [May 13], which led to no candidate being chosen in Ward 10 after officials were forced to shut down the event over safety concerns.

Somalian supporters of city council candidate Nasri Warsame turned to political violence and reportedly assaulted Minneapolis city council member Aisha Chughtai and her supporters when she took the stage to speak at the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s endorsing convention....

Video shows Warsame supporters forcefully jumping on stage, banging on tables, waving signs, and shouting over both Chughtai and her supporters.
"We're Numbah One!"
Unable to contain the disruption, convention chairman Sam Doten was forced to adjourn the meeting without a candidate being chosen[,] citing safety reasons, and called the situation a great "embarrassment."

The event was held at the Ella Baker Global Studies & Humanities Magnet School, a K-8 institution in the Uptown neighborhood.

Reporter Andy Ngo provided video (below) of the fracas and noted that in Somalia, "political violence is routine."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Bravery of a Marine Guerilla in WWII
[Leatherneck Magazine via Sandboxx] Somewhere out in the Pacific is a young Marine who need not be there. He could have been home for Christmas, the next, and the next — if he wanted to. But he chose to go back.

This was no surprise to those Marines who knew Reid Carlos Chamberlain, 25, of El Cajon, California. Nor to his mother, Mrs. Ettie Chamberlain, a frail, semi-invalid whose pride in the Marine Corps is matched only by her pride for her son. It had to be that way.

Mrs. Chamberlain has had considerable correspondence with the Corps ever since 1938, when young Reid, at the end of his fourth year of high school, first enlisted. She and her husband, Donald Chamberlain, fully approved. But in April 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlain had to ask for their son’s release. The father was already in the throes of his last illness; the mother was not strong enough to work.

Young Reid, with serious blue eyes, wavy brown hair, and a tanned ruddiness fresh from San Diego, got an honorable discharge to become the family breadwinner. He was still determined to make the Marine Corps his career (he enlisted in the Reserve the day of his discharge), but for the moment, other duties were more pressing. He went to trade school and became a riveter in an aircraft plant.

He was doing better than all right, and the aircraft company, reading the signs of the times, sought to get him discharged from the Reserve. But this required an application from Private First Class Chamberlain, and he never submitted it. On June 26, 1941, he returned to active duty.

Texas high school postpones graduation after 85% of class fails to earn diploma
[NYP] A high school in Texas postponed its graduation after the vast majority of the class failed to earn their diplomas.

Just five of the 33 senior students at Marlin High School near Waco, Tex., met the requirements for commencement, with grades or attendance issues dooming most students, KWTX-TV reported.

The school said it planned to reschedule the graduation for sometime in June so students would have more time to qualify, according to a statement posted to Facebook.

"Our commitment to excellence remains unshaken," Superintendent Darryl Henson said in the statement.

"We hold firm to our belief that every student in Marlin ISD can and will achieve their potential."

Henderson also took to Twitter to address the dismal graduation rate.

"Our district will grow from this setback," Henson said.

Passenger who opened Asiana plane door in mid-air tells police he was 'uncomfortable': report
[NYPOST] A passenger on an Asiana Airlines flight told police he opened a door on the plane minutes before it landed in Daegu, South Korea, on Friday because he was "uncomfortable," Yonhap News Agency reported.
"Uncomfortable! Can't breathe~ I need air... I'll open the door and step outside for a few minutes! That'll do it!"
The man, in his thirties, told police that he opened the door because he "wanted to get off the plane quickly", Yonhap said, citing the Daegu Dongbu Police Station.
"Almost did too. All those people tried to help me do it. If I hadn't hit the door jamb I'da been first off!"
He also told police he was stressed after losing his job recently.
"They fired me!"
"I can see why."

Rooters could not immediately reach police at the station.
[RING! RING!] "We're sorry. All our operators are busy with other calls. Your call is very important to us so please stay on the line until you can't take the bouncy 'on hold' music anymore."
The man opened the door when the plane was about 700 feet above the ground, causing panic onboard.
"Close the door, dammit!"
"Yeah! Yer lettin' the flies in!"

Nine passengers were sent to the hospital with breathing issues.
"I couldn't breathe! I think I got decompression! D'ya think I should sue?"
"You were only at seven hundred feet. I wouldn't push it."

All were dismissed from the hospital after about two hours, a fire department official said.
"Kim, throw him out!... Not you, Kim. Him, Kim!"
Police plan to arrest the detained man after investigations conclude, Yonhap said.
"This is Korea. Stupidity is a prosecutable offense. They used to cut yer head off for it."
"Ummm... What's the sentence now?"
"Ninety nine years."

Doug Casey on the Death of Privacy… and What Comes Next
[International Man] International Man: In practically every country, the allowable limit for cash withdrawals and transactions continues to be lowered.

Further, rampant currency debasement is lowering the real value of these ridiculous limits.

Why are governments so intent on phasing out cash? What is really behind this coordinated effort?

Doug Casey: Let me draw your attention to three truths that my friend Nick Giambruno has pointed out about money in bank accounts.

#1. The money isn’t really yours. You’re just another unsecured creditor if the bank goes bust.

#2. The money isn’t actually there. It’s been lent out to borrowers who are illiquid or insolvent.

#3. The money isn’t really money. It’s credit created out of thin air.

The point is that cash is freedom. And when the State limits the utility of cash—physical dollars that don’t leave an electronic trail—they are limiting your personal freedom to act and compromising your privacy. Governments are naturally opposed to personal freedom and personal privacy because those things limit their control, and governments are all about control.

International Man: Governments will probably mandate Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) as the "solution" when the next real or contrived crisis hits—which is likely not far off.

What’s your take? What are the implications for financial privacy?

Doug Casey: CBDCs are proposed as a solution, but in fact, they’re a gigantic problem.

Government is not your friend, and CBDCs are not a solution.

Afghanistan
Taliban Attacks Iran Border Post - Multiple Troops Dead & Wounded
[ZERO] Heavy gunfire between Taliban militants and the Iranian military broke out at a shared border on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least two Iranian border guards and more wounded.

The flare-up between Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran comes amid a fierce dispute over water rights, specifically concerning access of drought-stricken Iran to the Helmand River.

Each side accused the other of opening fire first, with IRNA claiming that the Iranian side inflicted "heavy casualties and serious damage" on the Taliban side, but numbers of Afghan casualties have remained unclear.

Later in the day Saturday the situation was described as being under control, with Tehran officials warning against further incursions.

"The border forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will decisively respond to any border trespassing and aggression, and the current authorities of Afghanistan must be held accountable for their unmeasured and contrary actions to international principles," Iran’s police chief, Gen. Ahmadreza Radan, was quoted as saying in state media.

Caribbean-Latin America
Follow up - Why Are US Military Personnel Heading To Peru?
[Naked Capitalism] The ostensible goal of the operation is to provide "support and assistance to the Special Operations of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and National Police of Peru," including in regions recently engulfed in violence.

Unbeknown, it seems, to most people in Peru and the US (considering the paucity of media coverage in both countries), US military personnel will soon be landing in Peru. The plenary session of Peru’s Congress last Thursday (May 18) authorised the entry of US troops onto Peruvian soil with the ostensible purpose of carrying out "cooperation activities" with Peru’s armed forces and national police. Passed with 70 votes in favour, 33 against and four abstentions, resolution 4766 stipulates that the troops are welcome to stay any time between June 1 and December 31, 2023.

The number of US soldiers involved has not been officially disclosed, at least as far as I can tell, though a recent statement by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador, who is currently person non grata in Peru, suggests it could be around 700. The cooperation and training activities will take place across a wide swathe of territory including Lima, Callao, Loreto, San Martín, Huánuco, Ucayali, Pasco, Junín, Huancavelica, Iquitos, Pucusana, Apurímac, Cusco and Ayacucho.

The last three regions, in the south of Peru, together with Arequipa and Puno, were the epicentre of huge political protests, strikes and road blocks from December to February after Peru’s elected President Pedro Castillo was toppled, imprisoned and replaced by his vice-president Dina Boluarte. The protesters’ demands included:

  • The release of Castillo
  • New elections
  • A national referendum on forming a Constitutional Assembly to replace Peru’s current constitution, which

'Devastating' Inflation Report Shatters Hopes of Economic Turnaround
[Townhall] Remember more than one year ago when the White House, President Biden, and the rest of his administration told Americans inflation was "transitory?" Well, now more than two years into his term, Biden's first of many attempts to avoid blame for rising prices is still being debunked anew thanks to Friday morning's release of April's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index.

Considered the "preferred gauge" on which the Federal Reserve bases its monetary policy decisions, the PCE price index surged again in April, blowing past some economists' estimates of a 3.9 percent annual advance to register a 4.4 percent increase over the year. Core PCE — excluding more volatile food and energy costs — also beat expectations with a 4.7 percent increase, though by a smaller margin.

#10  I admit I haven't checked on this, but I recently heard that the Fed redefined what M2 is and moved some of the criteria into M1.

The Fed's printing press has been, up until a little after the Fauci Flu fiasco, been running full steam ahead for many years and many presidents. So, where was the inflation 10 years ago if the Fed was printing so much? If the money was simply parked at the Fed, it never got into the economy as a whole. I guess that's where the velocity of money (M2) comes in, and M2 had been declining for years.

Now, throw in demand inflation (thanks again to the response to the Fauci Flu and this clownish Administration) along with interest rates suppressed for about ten years, it was only a matter of time.

That was one reason these banks have been failing. They bought millions/billions worth of long-term US Treasuries with a yield of, like, 1-2%. With deposits dropping like a rock, to meet those demands for withdrawals, the banks had to sell those long-term Treasuries on the secondary market at a loss (yields go up, prices of T-Bills and T-Bonds go down) and could no longer defer the losses on their "hold to maturity" assets on their balance sheets.

#12  #10 Doo Dah Man: "With deposits dropping like a rock, to meet those demands for withdrawals, the banks had to sell those long-term Treasuries on the secondary market at a loss "

Here's what I don't get. These types if illiquid situations (NOT insolvency--that's different) are where the Fed is supposed to step in and lend money to the bank under Reg A. The biggest mystery to me is why SVB and First Republic didn't just go to the Fed's discount window and borrow the money to pay the depositors. They don't HAVE to sell the bonds and realize the loss. They can borrow and ride out the storm until the Fed lowers rates again and their bonds are up to par again.

The FDIC swooping in and taking over has to be more than this...and no one has said boo, as far as I know.

Yes there was a change if definition in May 2020.
Before that Saving's Deposits were not considered M1, after that they were M1.

It didn't change the aggregates much. People simply haven't been putting their money into regular savings deposits very much since the 70s-80s inflation years and instead buy 1 or 3 or 6 month CDs or various 'preferred savings'.

US debt ceiling agreement to be adopted 'in the coming days or hours'
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Washington , May 27, 2023, 19:34 - IA Regnum. An agreement to raise the national debt ceiling and prevent default could be reached " in the next few hours or days," NBC Republican Majority Negotiator Patrick McHenry said on May 27.

“You know, this is not how I imagined the last hours or days. But we have come to a very narrow set of issues that are left to sort out," he said.

McHenry noted that negotiating groups continue to work over the weekend. " We're all tired, but that doesn't mean we're ready to accept an unacceptable offer."

Earlier, the US Treasury moved the date of possible default from June 1 to June 5. Department head Janet Yellen urged Congress to resolve the issue of the national debt ceiling as soon as possible.

As IA Regnum reported , the IMF urged the US Congress to immediately raise the national debt ceiling due to the fact that the current situation could create additional risks for the US and global economy.

Economists at Goldman Sach said earlier that they estimated the US Treasury Department's reserves would run out by June 9th.

The debt of the United States at the end of last year amounted to 31.42 trillion dollars, the next 13 countries in the world list owed a total of 31.4 trillion dollars. At the same time, Russia's public debt for 2022 amounted to about $295 billion, which is 107 times less than the American one, 33 times less than the Japanese one, and 13 times less than the Chinese one.

Seems the Republicans got about 60-70% of what they wanted.

Biden and McCarthy agree 'in principle' to raise $31.4 trillion limit for two years to avoid catastrophic default after months of negotiations
[MAIL] U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy have reached a deal to raise the federal government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, ending a months-long stalemate.

The deal would avert an economically destabilizing default, so long as they succeed in passing it through the narrowly divided Congress before the Treasury Department runs short of money to cover all its obligations, which it warned Friday will occur if the debt ceiling is not raised by June 5.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy came out of negotiations to address the press on Saturday night at 9:15pm.

'We have reached agreement in principle - a deal worthy of the American people to lift people out of poverty with no new taxes or government overreach programs,' McCarthy explained.

'I expect to finish the writing of the bill and then post the text of it tomorrow for it to be voted upon on Wednesday,' he said without taking any questions from reporters.

'Big, thorny issues remain,' one of the top negotiators, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., told reporters in the evening. Some of those outstanding issues, McHenry said then, 'the president and speaker have to resolve at that level.'

No cellphone? No problem! The vintage radio enthusiasts prepping for disaster
[Guardian] There’s an ancient fable that Glenn Morrison, a pony-tailed, 75-year-old who lives in the California desert, likes to tell to prove a point. As the lesson goes, one industrious ant readies for winter by stocking up on food and supplies, while an aimless grasshopper wastes time and doesn’t plan ahead. When the cold weather finally arrives, the ant is "fat and happy", but the grasshopper starves.

In this telling, Morrison is the ant, and those who don’t brace themselves for future emergencies — they’re the grasshoppers.

Morrison is in the business of being prepared. He’s the president of the Desert Rats (or the Radio Amateur Transmitting Society), a club based in Palm Springs that’s dedicated to everything ham radio.

The old-school technology has been around for more than a century. In lieu of smartphones and laptops, ham radio operators use handheld or larger "base station" radios to communicate over radio frequencies. The retro devices can range from the size of a walkie-talkie to the heft of a boxy, 20th-century VCR.

Generations after its invention, one of ham radio’s biggest draws for hobbyists is its usefulness in an emergency — think wildfires, earthquakes or another pandemic. If disaster strikes and internet or cellular networks fail, radio operators could spring into action and help with emergency response communications, and be able to keep in contact with their own networks.
