Woke Mandate: 'Culturally responsive' Illinois teacher training
[NEO] Here’s the situation in Illinois regarding the education of teachers across the entire state:
...[I]n December, the Illinois State Board of Education, or ISBE, passed a new rule that would require culturally responsive teaching and leading standards to be incorporated in all Illinois teacher preparation programs. Critics of the proposed standards have said they require educators to embrace left-leaning ideology and prioritize political and social activism in classrooms at a time when Illinois students are underperforming on basic skills tests...

Critics have pointed out that the requirements essentially impose an ideological litmus test on educators, making any teacher who does not espouse certain views unwelcome in Illinois schools. In their original form, the provisions were explicitly left-leaning, and educators were required to "embrace and encourage progressive viewpoints and perspectives." After opponents of the new rule brought public attention to the language, the word "progressive" was replaced with "inclusive," but this has not alleviated the concern that the standard is aimed at pushing a political agenda on Illinois educators and schools.

Yes, changing the language does not change the intent.
Critics of the new rule have also expressed concern that at a time when so many Illinois students are failing to achieve basic competency in reading and math — exacerbated by pandemic-related learning loss — pushing regulations on "politically-charged topics, including race, gender identity and the role of power, privilege and student activism" is not the proper focus of Illinois’ education establishment. As of 2019, only 38% of Illinois students in grades 3 through 8 met or exceeded Illinois Assessment of Readiness standards for English language arts, according to ISBE, and a mere 32% of students met or exceeded standards in math.

Ah, but first things first, and indoctrination in leftism is more important. In fact, the more ignorant the children are, the easier it will be to indoctrinate them. So the situation is win-win for the left.

Note also the predominance in the regulations of jargon that obfuscates the message, and probably bores most readers to tears. I would wager both things are purposeful:

The Narrative, the Coup, and the Bourgeoisie
[American Greatness] The purges began shortly after the revolution. For all its haste and ill-preparedness, the success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, led by the perpetually temperamental Vladimir Lenin and fueled by a fierce devotion to Marxism, quickly gave rise to the vast and unimaginably harsh Soviet labor camp system that would come to be known as the "gulag." As the leader of the newly established Russian Soviet Republic, Lenin wasted no time in ordering the establishment of decrees calling for the severe punishment of anyone deemed a "class enemy" to the new Soviet Republic.

From the perspective of Lenin and the Bolsheviks, class enemies were those who had opposed the Marxist Bolshevik Revolution and often consisted of individuals the Bolsheviks contemptuously regarded as privileged in their social class. These so-called class enemies, a term which eventually became synonymous with the "bourgeoisie," ostensibly posed a threat to the proletariat-ruled, Marxist utopia Lenin was promising to the masses.

Thus, lists were made, and the unfortunate bourgeoisie who found themselves on these lists were stripped of their rights and their property, sent to the gulag, and executed by the millions during Lenin’s purges and Stalin’s Great Terror. To be clear, Lenin’s goal was not to eradicate the bourgeoisie entirely. Rather, he hoped to deconstruct the existing cadre of class enemies via extreme wealth redistribution and ultimately rebuild as the Bourgeoisie 2.0. The Marxists believed their moral superiority bestowed upon them the responsibility to identify and remove privilege from one class while simultaneously shifting privilege to those in the less fortunate classes.

As author Daniel Orlovsky writes in Russia: A History, " . . . the ’exploiters’ were deprived of civil rights and legally classified as the ’disenfranchised’ (lishentsy). They had no right to work, but could be mobilized for menial labour or public works." But how, under the bleak rule of Communism, could so many be considered privileged enough to deserve such a fate? The answer of course was that the bourgeoisie nomenclature was inherently vague, by design, and the gulag did not differentiate between its political prisoners of one social class or another. If you were there, you were an enemy of the state.

In her Pulitzer Prize-winning historical account of the Soviet gulag system, author Anne Applebaum writes:

-War on Police-
A City Prepares For A Trial
Power Line's John Hinderaker, who lives in Minnesota, frets over the looming trial of the cops accused of murdering George Floyd.
[PowerLine] Derek Chauvin goes on trial for murder in the death of George Floyd on March 8. His trial has been separated from that of the other three officers who have been charged; theirs will begin in August. Chauvin is the principal defendant. Of the four policemen involved, two were on something like their fourth day on the job. The third was a tiny guy, also not very experienced. Chauvin was the only officer on the scene who had the experience and the strength to deal with an oversized career criminal who was hopped up on drugs, and he took the lead.

The city of Minneapolis awaits Chauvin’s trial anxiously. A local left-wing outlet reports:

#2  The cat jumped on my desk while I was cutting and pasting this article causing me to prematurely hit the Submit button. Here is the part at the bottom that was left out:

I didn’t know that the trial will be live-streamed. This could be a local version of the O.J. Simpson trial.

Their lawyers will help the public understand the criminal justice system, teaching things like the difference between “probable cause” to charge somebody versus “proof beyond reasonable doubt,” which is needed for a conviction; the elements of the alleged offenses; what a jury is.

It seems a little late for that. This part, I don’t really understand:

City officials plan regular briefings to keep the public abreast of trial-related preparations and responses and combat misinformation.

What “misinformation” will they try to combat? Chauvin’s defense?

I have tried many jury cases in a number of states, and I have high regard for the integrity and common sense with which the vast majority of Americans approach jury duty. But rarely have we seen a trial where the atmosphere has been so polluted with pretrial publicity, where a defendant’s guilt has been confidently pronounced not only by nearly every commentator and journalist in sight, but by senior government officials, and where jurors will have every reason to fear that if they return the “wrong” verdict, a mob awaits them. I think the likelihood that Derek Chauvin can get a fair trial is remote.

Still, an uneasiness has settled over the City of Minneapolis. The authorities dealt incompetently with the rioting that occurred last May and June. They may have a chance to try to do better in the Spring.

#3  ^ Yeah, I would go out on a limb and say that if 3,000 troops have to guard the courthouse the defendant needs to find himself another courthouse. Which I assume was tried.

But the mob is going to riot regardless of the verdict. I can't imagine these folks walking away saying "Yeah, I watched the trial and I believe justice was done."

And then BLM would riot in celebration.

Economy
SD Gov. Kristi Noem at CPAC: 'COVID didn't crush the economy. Government crushed the economy.'
[LI] South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was a big hit at CPAC this weekend. One of the most popular parts of her speech came when she talked about how she didn’t shut down businesses or churches because of COVID.

She emphasized that the destruction of the economy was a choice made by government.

Andrew Mark Miller reports at the Washington Examiner:

Kristi Noem rips virus lockdowns in CPAC speech: ’COVID didn’t crush economy. Government did’

Gov. Kristi Noem received several loud applause breaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference after slamming the government-imposed coronavirus lockdowns and touting her handling of the virus in South Dakota.
"COVID didn’t crush the economy. Government crushed the economy," Noem told the crowd of conservatives gathered in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday. "South Dakota is the only state in America that never ordered a single business or church to close."...

"I took an oath when I was in Congress to uphold the United States Constitution," Noem said last April. "So, I believe in people’s freedoms and liberties, and I always balance that with every decision that I make as governor. I get overly concerned with leaders who take too much power in a time of crisis because I think that’s how we directly lose our country someday by leaders overstepping their proper role."

The hyenas are beginning to circle Andrew Cuomo
[American Thinker] When we think of hyenas, we think of animals who avoid strong prey. Instead, they find the weak and the wounded, first tentatively attacking them and, as their prey fails, becoming increasingly aggressive. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, last year’s golden boy, is this year’s wounded prey, and the Democrats are out to get him. Expect that same pattern — a golden boy who is seen as weak and will suddenly be destroyed — to happen to Biden soon.

I reported on Lindsey Boylan in December, when the former aide accused Cuomo of sexually harassing her. Back then, while finding Cuomo loathsome, I was a bit dubious about Boylan’s claims. Reading her texts about her experience, her narrative had internal contradictions that didn’t ring true.

In December, Boylan’s claims sort of vanished. The media certainly weren’t interested because Cuomo was still the anti-Trump who had shown America how good politicians handled the Wuhan Virus.

Everything changed when New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, attacked Cuomo from the left, revealing that he had misrepresented the number of elderly people his nursing home policy killed. (I assume that James plans to run for New York governor and wanted to knock Cuomo out early.)

Stick a Fork in Andrew Cuomo... He's Done
[PJ] Between killing thousands of elderly folks with his deadly nursing home COVID-19 policy, and the now two allegations of sexual harassment, the Emmy Award-winning Governor Andrew Cuomo has found himself lacking in political capital recently... and it just got worse.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has finally spoken out about the allegations against the governor, and called both of the charges made against him "credible."

"The women who have come forward with serious and credible charges against Governor Cuomo deserve to be heard and to be treated with dignity," Pelosi said in an exclusive statement provided to Fox News. "The independent investigation must have due process and respect for everyone involved."

On Friday, the New York Times published the accusations of a second former Cuomo aide, Charlotte Bennett, 25, who said that when she was alone with Cuomo in his office, the governor asked her about her sex life. She claimed he asked if she "had ever been with an older man," and made other suggestive comments that made her believe she was being propositioned for sex. Bennett’s accusations came on the heels of another former aide, Lindsey Boylan, detailing the sexual harassment she allegedly experienced from the disgraced governor. Boylan originally came forward in December, in a blog post on Medium, which we reported here at PJ Media, but the mainstream media wasn’t particularly interested in the story at the time.

Prior to these recent allegations gaining traction in the media, a growing number of Democrats in the New York state senate had already tried to strip Cuomo of his emergency COVID powers, and he faced calls for him to be impeached and prosecuted for his cover-up of nursing home COVID deaths. The sexual harassment allegations on top of that are likely too much for him to overcome and restore his legacy.

#1  ...The best part is that he ain't going easy. I'm guessing at least 2-3 more revelations before the NY state political machine has a come-to-Jesus meeting with him, and by that point he'll be so damaged that in 2024 he'll be no more than a trivia question. Which might be the point here - I still think the timing on this is a little odd, but one takes the little victories where one can find them.

And do you think that they'll make him give his Emmy(TM) back?

RUGER Rangler review (video)
[Get Zone] The Ruger Wrangler is a Budget-Friendly option to the Ruger Single Six and yet has some features that give it advantages. Coming in at less than half the price of a Single Six, this is a great way to pick up a Single Action revolver for a great price and still have Ruger Quality.

Ruger has been making single action revolvers since the 1950s — they have a line going all the way up from 22 to 44 magnum. They are very popular with the cowboy action sports and the shooting community as a whole. The Bearcat and Single Six especially, are just great quality firearms. However, they can be expensive. The Ruger Wrangler is a 22 single action pistol. They’ve cut down on some of the manufacturing process to make this pistol about half the price, without sacrificing quality.

COVID-19: Study shows symptoms and testosterone levels in men are related
[Jerusalem Post] Low levels of testosterone could increase the severity of an illness.

An imbalance in men's testosterone levels was linked to the severity of their coronavirus case, a new study has found. The experiment, led by Andrea Salonia MD of Milan's Urological Research Institute, compared levels of circulating total testosterone (tT) in confirmed and hospitalized male coronavirus patients to healthy male blood donors.

The finds were published in the study called "Severely low testosterone in males with COVID‐19: a case‐control study" in the scientific journal American Society of Andrology and European Academy of Andrology on February 26.

Previous research identified a potential correlation between immune responses and biological sex; males are statistically more likely to catch the virus.

The virus enters and infects host cells via a glycoprotein called S, which passes through the cell membrane. This protein must be primed by proteins ACE2 and TMPRSS2, which are both steroid hormones responsible for managing masculine functions. Additionally, ACE2 levels are naturally higher in men. Researchers therefore hypothesized that COVID-19 would be related to male hormone levels.

The objective of the experiment was to test testosterone levels and the presence of hypogonadism, a dysfunction of sex hormone production, in male COVID-19 patients.

Government
VDH - Is the Biden Administration Stumbling Into War?
[American Greatness] What causes wars?

Innately aggressive cultures and governments, megalomania, the desire for power, resources, and empire prompt nations to bully or attack others. Less rational Thucydidean motives such as fear and honor and perceptions of self-interest are not to be discounted either.

But what allows these preemptive or aggressive agendas to reify, to take shape, and to leave tens of thousands dead?

The less culpable target (and wars are rarely a matter of 50/50 culpability) also has a say in what causes wars. The invaded and assaulted sometimes overlooked or contextualized serial and mounting aggression. They displayed real military weakness or simple political ineptness that eroded deterrence. They failed to make defensive alliances with stronger nations or slashed defense investments that made the use of deterrent force impossible.

In sum, without deterrence and the clear potential in extremis to do an aggressor damage, there can be no meaningful peace negotiations, no "conflict resolution"—unless one believes a Hitler, Stalin, Mao, or Kim Il-sung can become a reasonable interlocutor across the peace table.

WEAKNESS AS STRENGTH, STRENGTH AS WEAKNESS
But there are also other more subtle follies that can turn tensions into outright fighting. And they are relevant in the current global landscape as we go not just from one president to the next, but from a realist and tragic view of foreign policy to an idealist and therapeutic one.

One catalyst for war is a lack of transparency about the relative strengths and will of potential enemies.

If, even unwittingly, President Biden projects the image that the Pentagon is more concerned about ferreting out wayward internal enemies than in seeking unity by deterring aggressors, then belligerents such as China, North Korea, and Iran and others will likely—even if falsely and unwisely—wager that the United States will not or cannot react to provocations, as it has done in the past. And accordingly, they will be emboldened to provoke their neighbors with less worry about consequences.

Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 on the false assumption that Stalin had been too busy purging his military elite, starving his own people, or executing both rivals and friends. He certainly did all that and more.
