Detroit Mayor Makes Bail
A judge on Friday allowed indicted Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to post $50,000 bond to get out of jail but ordered new restrictions on his movements, while new charges were filed against the embattled mayor. By early afternoon it was not clear if Kilpatrick had posted bail and left jail.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Jackson ruled that Kilpatrick, who spent the night in jail but showed up in court in a neat tan suit, should be allowed some type of bond despite breaching court rules by crossing the Canadian border without permission in July.

Kilpatrick, 38, once was seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, faces a potential 15-year prison term if convicted of perjury, obstruction of justice and official misconduct stemming from a sex scandal and his handling of a whistle-blower lawsuit. Jackson set a $50,000 cash bond for Kilpatrick, eliminated his right to travel outside the city and ordered electronic monitoring of his movements.

Under two felony assault charges announced on Friday by Michigan Attorney General Michael Cox, Kilpatrick is accused of shoving a Wayne County sheriff's deputy into an investigator from the prosecutor's office in an altercation at a friend's house. The new charges, which carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison, left unclear whether the mayor would remain in custody or be freed.

Kilpatrick's previous $75,000 bond was revoked by a Michigan District Court judge on Thursday, who ordered him jailed.

Kilpatrick's legal woes have added to the uncertainty surrounding Detroit, the 11th largest U.S. city and hub to the struggling U.S. auto industry.

#1  I happened to catch Barbara Rose-Collins (think Cynthia McKinney, but on the Detroit City Council) on the tube expressing surprise over Kwame being jailed for violating the court order not to leave the state. She said His Honor only went to Windsor. "It is not a foreign country. It is just across the street. We go there all the time for dinner"

While Detroiters often do drive over to Windsor for dinner, it is across a river, not a street. And most of them will notice that you pass thru both Candadian and US Customs on your trip.

Comedian Bernie Mac Dies at 50
RIP

Comedian Bernie Mac died this morning in Chicago after a long hospitalization from pneumonia.

Mac, whose real name is Bernard McCullough, passed away early this morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was 50 years old.

His rep just issued the following statement to TMZ: "Actor/ comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital. No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family's privacy continues to be respected."

Just a few days ago, Mac's condition was characterized as "stable"; Bernie had been in the hospital for a week.

#1  Pneumonia!?!! For some reason I'm reminded of about 20 years ago when straight people began dying from AIDs (from blood transfusions and such), the claim was usually that "they died of pneumonia". Seems odd for the guy to die in the hospital of a lung infection at 50.
Posted by: Scooter McGruder || 08/09/2008 11:26 Comments || Top||

#2  Not if its contracted in the hospital. MSM does a better job of covering up the death rate in our hospitals caused by mistakes and infections than they did on the Edwards extra curriculum activities. It's real hard to scream quagmire with every death in Iraq or Afghanistan when x10 more die because of those problems in hospitals.

#5  Lots of people die every year in the US from pneumonia. Sometimes the patient doesn't get treatment fast enough and thinks its just the flu.

In cases where it leads to blood poisoning, over 20% of sufferers will die.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Al Franken holds event - one person shows up
Hitip Drudge
And no it was not his mom

There’s an old saying in politics that elections are won or lost one vote at a time. That's all he's got

On Friday, DFL-endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken demonstrated how true that saying can be, when a roundtable on veterans issues at Brigitte’s Cafe his campaign scheduled drew only one participant.

Josh John, a St. Cloud resident who said he served in the Navy from 2000-04, had Franken to himself for an hour as he described difficulties he faced returning from his tour of duty and the help he received from his Veterans Services Office and the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

“When I first asked for help at the VA, I got kind of a bad attitude from one person, so I ended up leaving and not registering,” he said.

“A year later, the stress was getting to me. I started secluding myself from my family, not wanting to do anything,” he said.

“My mom and my aunt eventually got me to talk with my county VSO. He got me registered with the VA and since then, I haven’t had a problem. I’ve gotten a lot of help, and every question I’ve gotten answered,” John said.

Franken, moonbat dreaming battling to unseat U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., in this fall’s election, discussed his proposal to expand veterans benefits, what he called a lack of leadership from Coleman, and recent gains on veterans issues he said had only been made because of a Democratic-controlled Congress. Uhhhh What?!?!

“Everyone’s running around saying Congress never gets anything done,” he said. “But despite 90 filibuster threats by Senate Republicans, it took Democrats to get the new GI Bill passed and to finally fully fund VA health care.” Then his lips fell off
After leaving Brigitte’s, Franken was scheduled to campaign at the Benton County Fair in Sauk Rapids.

Franken’s plan

Franken said he hopes to serve on the same Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, if elected, on which the late Sen. Paul Wellstone served.

“Paul was always someone concerned about vets, especially homeless vets — the men and women who fell through the cracks,” he said. “I want to continue that.”

Franken said he would work to guarantee every veteran health care for life by making full VA health care funding an untouchable entitlement in the budget, increasing funding for mental health treatment for veterans, and increasing pay and benefits for military personnel and families.

He said he did not know how much the program would cost, or how your taxes he would pay for it.

Franken also attacked Coleman, saying he had twice voted for budgets that cut VA funding, three times against making full VA health care funding a requirement, and 18 times against Democratic amendments to increase funding for veterans.

“It’s only since 2006 that Coleman’s voted for veterans,” he said. “Before that, he voted time and time again with the Bush administration and against veterans.”

Coleman response

Coleman has voted more than 30 times to increase federal funding for veterans, which has gone up more than 70 percent during his term, said Luke Friedrich, Coleman’s campaign spokesman.

“Norm has been a champion for veterans throughout his time in office and Al Franken’s dishonest, negative attacks cannot change that fact,” he said in a statement.

The first bill Coleman got passed in Congress required the Pentagon to pay troops’ travel expenses when they return home for rest and relaxation, Friedrich said.

Coleman supported the GI Bill expansion, secured federal reintegration funds for Minnesota Army National Guard troops returning from overseas and got a bill passed in 2006 requiring the VA to reach out to veterans informing them of benefits for which they are eligible, among other accomplishments, he said.

Let's not forget that this is the state that put Keith Ellison (Muslim) in place. And Franken's the best the Dems ca do?

#3  I read this too and I came off feeling the guy wasn't really trying and wanting someone to come to him. Sorry charlie life just doesn't work that way. Way funny that Al only had one vet show up for a townhall. Kind of blast that whole "The military supports the left" diatribe out of the water. Btw I am retired and I have bad and good experience with Retired Military Health Care system. I do know that I would not want to even imagine the whole health ststem being run by Washington.

#5  Yes, it is hard for veterans these days. We can't count the number of GIs returning home with psychological troubles here. The military just uses our young as canon fodder and then tosses them to street with so much as a decent psychological prescription plan. I hear even the remote controlled fighter plane "warriors" are finding it tough to cope with our society. When will it end? With robots, that's what. We make and manufacture killer robots, thus saving the lives and minds of young men (and now women). I'm sure even a scottsburg such as Al Franken would agree.

#1  Great idea for BO! Eat a porkchop for the camera and still the rumors about him being an undercover Muslim. But, would torque off a lot of Muslims. On the other hand, refuse to eat a porkchop and give suport to the Muslim conspiracy crowd, but reenforce the loyality of his Muslim vote. Which way would he go? Only the Big O knows.

#2  Well BO IS in Hawaii. Now on the Big Island there is a little hole in wall hotel by Captain Cook called the Manago Hotel. It is well known for its pork chops, now not eating Manago pork chops is not just missing one of life's little pleasures, it is down right UN-HAWAIIAN! Just remember if you eat dinner at the Manago and you don't wanted to be thought of as "lolo" order the pork chops or the fish of the day.

Nigerian advises against 86 wives
Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women. The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God. "A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.

He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer. "I don't go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them." But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult. Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally. But Mr Bello Abubakar says there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

"To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows," he says. "God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery." As Mr Bello Abubakar emerged from his compound to speak to the BBC, his wives and children broke out into a praise song. Most of his wives are less than a quarter of his age - and many are younger than some of his own children.

Convict ‘shortage’ in Singapore, prison construction halted
Singapore has stopped the construction of two prisons partly because the city state’s aging population is not producing enough criminals, its prisons director said.

Ng Joo Hee said work on two of the four prisons of the Singapore $1 billion Changi Prison Complex was halted after the number of inmates fell to a 10-year low of 11,768 last year. Singapore has some of the stiffest penalties for crime in the world, including cane lashes and death by hanging for some drug offences.

#5  Singapore is the only place I've ever been where I thought there was a possibility that the 2nd Amendment might not be an absolute requirement. Those guys don't put up with any nonsense there.

Justice in Singapore is swift, sure and very, very tough on offenders. NO ONE who goes to jail in Singapore EVER wants to see the inside of their prison system again. We should be just as tough. I'd like to see us caning lots of the bastards we have in jails now; it would do wonders for their post-prison attitudes. A fair number of summary executions for the worst offenders wouldn't hurt either.
