Jordan wants Paleostinians to post bond
2002-07-14
Jordanian authorities have begun imposing banking guarantees on West Bank Palestinians arriving in the country by land to ensure they do not overstay their visit. The guarantees range from almost $3,000 to $7,000, depending on the nature of the visit. The money must be deposited in a Jordanian bank for the duration of the stay. The decision was taken by Jordanian officials after talks with their Palestinian counterparts last week. The move now clears the way visits by thousands of Palestinians stranded in the West Bank who had been awaiting Jordanian authorisation to cross. Jordan had imposed restrictions on the West Bank Palestinians crossing by land at the end of March to avoid any Israeli attempt to expel them.
Jordan doesn't want Paleostinians to cross the border and settle in their country. They've already got enough of them - 1.7 million, in fact. If Paleostinians were industrious, hard-working people not given to rioting and insurrection that probably wouldn't be the case; but what country wants to accept large numbers of immigrants who're liable to explode without warning? Obviously it's some sort of a plot or conspiracy, of course, but it's kinda hard to find the Jews who control Jordan...
