U.S. soldier dead in Philippines blast
2002-10-02
An American soldier and a Filipino were killed in a powerful blast Wednesday outside a bar frequented by soldiers from an adjacent military base in the southern Philippines. At least 14 people were wounded in the explosion, which went off just a few yards from where the U.S. troops have been staying while supporting a humanitarian mission on nearby Basilan island. According to witnesses, the blast ripped the roof off a small, wooden house and damaged six shops. Debris included a large number of nails from the bomb. NBC’s Tammy Kupperman reported from the Pentagon that initial reports suggest the bomb was in a car or a motorcycle. A top-ranking Philippine military official said the slain American was an Army master sergeant who died of his wounds en route to a hospital. The other person killed was a Filipino, the official said.
Now the turbans can sit around and high-five each other, and congratulate each other on how heroic they are. Sounds a lot like the occasional bar bomibings in Saigon, back in the days of my youth, with the addition of the nails — guess the turbans got that from the Paleostinians. Who's gonna be the first Dem to holler "quagmire"?
Thanks for the headzup, Steve...
