Chief Moose goes ballistic over sniper leak...
2002-10-09
The police chief investigating a string of Washington-area sniper shootings said Wednesday that leaks could compromise the investigation and harshly criticized former law enforcement officers speculating about the case. "Maybe they don't live here," said Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose. "Maybe they don't have children that live here. So it's all fun to be on television. But maybe they need to come here, live here, sit outside and have coffee, and then let's see how open they'll be to ranting and raving and then calling the suspect or the suspects names."
Yep. All bent out of shape...
Several news organizations, including WUSA-TV, The Washington Post and The Associated Press, citing unnamed sources, reported Wednesday that police had found a taunting message outside a school where a 13-year-old boy was shot Monday. According to the reports, a note reading "Dear policeman, I am God" was left on a Tarot card known as the Death card, part of a deck used in fortune telling.
Probably he knows something that I don't. On its face, that looks like the sort of valuable information he'd want to get out to the public. If the data are wrong, he should say so — no card, no message. If the info's right, it says lots of interesting things:

  • The shooter's not a turban and probably not the guy in camo pants with a gun fixation.
  • If the goober claims to be God, he's probably an 18- to 24-year-old; older than that, people usually have some humility, or at least enough self-consciousness that they don't claim to be God.
  • He's into tarot, which suggests goth culture, or some other sort of New Age foolishness.
  • He's also into Drama — he sees himself, or wants to see himself, as Important, the Star of the Show, the Center of Attention.

The card itself provides a handwriting sample, unless it's a typed message, which will give a clue to nationality if he's not a native Merkin. It may also contain fingerprints. So why hide it away? He knows he left it...
Moose said Wednesday that citizens should let officials know if they want the media to investigate the shootings or if they want police to handle the case. He declined to talk about the card.
That's pure snit. Put that down to his not getting enough sleep...
"It is inappropriate to comment about this card," Moose said. "I need to make sure I don't do anything to hinder our ability to bring this person or these people into custody. ... Let us do our job."

#7  If the info is true, I agree it's not an Islamist extremist (or plural of them), but militant pagan has a point there. It's not someone who knows much about Tarot symbolism either. More likely just someone who thought using that card was "cool", or someone who thinks it will throw people off 'the scent' (ie, someone who has been known to rant against such things).

The guy also requested the media not reveal the card, so that's probably why Moose was pissed (I suspect the guy said "don't" because he wanted it revealed.)

The Islamists are superstitious enough that they think even handling Tarot cards is evil, and saying "I am God" would be so blasphemous as to doom them to an eternity of hell. So I think it's very unlikely (assuming that card was left by the shooter).

#6  Said it on Quick's site yesterday and so forgive me for repeating it here, but this whole "this guy is into New Age" seems highly unlikely to me. The Death card is not indicitive of death, rather a paradigm shift. The Devil, The Aeon, or Judgement would be the appropriate card(s) if this individual had proper working knowledge of anything metaphysical. Naturally, the media has taken this detail and ran with it, but IMHO, this evidence was either planted by someone, the guy isn't even 1/4 as smart as everyone seems to think he is, or he left it to confuse and/or make an attempt at a wholly inaccurate statement that ultimately has nothing to do with the taking of a life. The media is glaringly ignorant of all things related to so-called alternative religions, so I wouldn't suggest buying into much of their crap. And if the FBI, CIA et al are using this as part of the profile, they may be barking up the wrong tree, though possibly in the right forest. Just had to vent....MP

#5  [Putting on Amatuer Profiler hat] Okay, 100-200 meters. He's shot mid and long range target work-- probably at a range. Or at least a hell of a lot of cans on a fence-rail. (which I doubt.) If he's working without a scope (unless he's got a baby-scope, the people he's killing are nothing more target practice in his twisted mind. OR (another thought...) he's shot big game in the mountains.

I wish Moose would let loose with some of the info so we could know who this clown really is. Mary Lu

#4  The Brits placed over 2,000,000 videocameras throughout their country during the I.R.A. terror. Americans may have to submit to that type of invasion of privacy, if the sniper is not caught

#3  Still, although he's apparently carried the weapon in a long duffle-type bag, I'd bet it's not an AR-15.... sounds like a hunting rifle...bolt-action (amateur-profiler! take with a LARGE grain of salt)...shell casing should confirm

#2  All I've ever heard of is a single shot for each. But the ranges I've seen have been 100-150 yards - not even close to scope range.

#1  I'm still thinking camo-type or a closet one. Definately deeply sketzzo from the business card from God.
Also Fred has he ever fired more than once at a target? Mary Lu
