| Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who won Thursday's Likud Party leadership contest against former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, apparently has done what many here thought impossible: He has gained the trust of his party and the Israeli people despite two years of intense conflict with the Palestinians. Netanyahu conceded defeat after voter polls projected a 20-percentage-point victory for Sharon. Good for him. Now Netanyahu can shut up and do his job — like he should have been doing since the day he took the job as Foreign Minister... Mark Heller of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies in Tel Aviv said Sharon, 74, "appears to be the steady hand at the wheel, which is probably why most Israelis also prefer him. The apple cart is unstable enough as it is." Couldn't have said it better myself... |
