Florida Guard Units Called Up Amid War Build-Up
2003-01-10
More than 1,200 soldiers in a Florida National Guard combat unit have been called up for active duty as part of the U.S. build-up for a possible war against Iraq, a guard spokesman said on Friday. A further 600 soldiers from the guard's 124th Infantry regiment were on alert for possible mobilization, spokesman Lt. Col. Ron Tittle said. It is largest call-up of Florida National Guard units since World War II. There was no word of where they would be sent or if they would see action.
"I don't know exactly where they are going. The operations we're asking them to support are Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom," Tittle said, referring to the U.S. "war on terror."
He added, however, that they had been issued desert camouflage uniforms.
Ron, that would be a hint they are going to some place with a lot of sand. Could be Las Vegas, but don't get your hopes up.
"They are combat soldiers. It's a light infantry unit, highly mobile," Tittle said. Troops from the 2nd and 3rd Battalions, with more than 600 soldiers headquartered in Orlando and Panama City, traveled to Fort Stewart, Georgia, this week to begin further training. The Miami-based 1st Battalion, was placed on alert on Thursday for possible mobilization.
