| Syrian President Bashar Assad's planned visit to Iran has been called off at the last minute, Iranian government officials said Wednesday. No reason was given for the sudden change of plan. Assad had been due to arrive in Tehran Wednesday to hold talks with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Mohammad Khatami and other senior officials to discuss regional issues including Iraq and Palestine. "The visit has been canceled," a senior government official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Hmmmm... Kind of an abrupt statement, isn't it? One is left to wonder why, at least for a few days... |

| #1 Damascus, Jan 15, IRNA -- A spokesman at the Syrian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Wednesday stressed that media reports on the exact official date for the visit by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Tehran `had not been accurate'. It had been earlier reported that Assad would visit Tehran later this week. I read somewhere that Assad stayed in Syria because of the report that Russia had agreed to build a nuclear reactor for Syria. Something about the Syrian air defense being on full alert expecting a Israeli air strike. Must have been hiding in a bunker, somewhere. |
