Imam jailed for ’wife-beating manual’ |
2004-01-15 |
EFL A prominent Muslim preacher was sentenced to 15 months in prison yesterday for writing a book advising men on how best to beat their wives without leaving tell-tale marks on their bodies. Couldn’t find it on Amazon.com. A jury in Barcelona found Mohamed Kamal Mustafa, the imam of a mosque in the southern tourist resort town of Fuengirola, guilty of inciting violence against women and also fined him £1,500. Violence being incited from an imam? Naw! Come on now. You’re joshing me? In his book Women in Islam, published three years ago, Mustafa wrote that verbal warnings followed by a period of sexual inactivity can be used to discipline a disobedient wife. If that failed he said that according to Islamic law, beatings could be then judiciously administered. "The blows should be concentrated on the hands and feet using a rod that is thin and light so that it does not leave scars or bruises on the body," wrote Kamal. Real charmer, this guy. |
