| Indonesian lawmakers move to free Bashir |

| Indonesian legislators will urge police to release militant Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who was re-arrested last week on terrorism charges, a senior parliamentary official said yesterday. 'We will ask police to release him and place him under house arrest,' said Mr Hamdan Zulva of Parliament's Commission for Legal and Human Rights Affairs. 'It is impossible for the ustaz, who is already so old, to flee and destroy evidence so that he can escape the law.' He said members of the panel will meet police chief General Da'i Bachtiar today to find out if the charges against Bashir were trumped up by investigators under pressure from the United States. |
