The Al-Qaeda-linked militant group led by Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi claimed responsibility for the killing of the governor of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, in a message released on an Islamist web site. "Your brothers ... have executed the apostate and traitor, the governor of Mosul, in an ambush," said the statement, issued in the name of "the military wing of Tawhid wa al-Jihad (Unification and Holy War)", the name used by Zarqawi’s movement.
