German Government to Auction Off Nazi Holiday Camp |
2004-08-26 |
EFL The German government will try next month to auction off part of a 10,000 room hotel complex built by the Nazis as a holiday resort for soldiers and workers. Adolf Hitler commissioned the holiday camp at Prora on the Baltic island of Ruegen in the 1930s as part of the Nazis' "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength Through Joy") program to create a healthy, strong nation capable of conquering the world. Ahh, the good ol' days. Nazi scum. The outbreak of World War II meant the building was never opened as a hotel. The eight austere concrete blocks, resembling a government ministry, were used as a shelter for bombed-out That Hitler. What an innovator. Each room was supposed to be identical offering a sea view. The huge buildings, designed along utilitarian principles, evoke the Nazis' love of the bombastic and hatred of individuality. You mean Nazis hated individuality? Reuters editors must be slipping to let that comment through... |

#8 He didn't say "learn to forget about the past", he said "learn to get over the past". Maybe still not pretty. But if they manage to put a Nazi building to good use, I won't complain. And keeping the building will tell people more about the monstrosity of the Nazi past than removing it. You don't knock down the Pyramides because they were built with slaves and certainly a lot of blood (not that I'm comparing the architectonic value of both buildings). |

#7 Chris W, your snarky comment about Jews was uncalled for. It was a comment about people like Schwartz who wish that we "would learn to forget about the past", which in this case means to forget that these giant resorts were built with blood money stolen from murdered German and European Jews, and I will not retract it. |

#2 I just read about this in "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich". Everyone who had a job in the Third Reich had to belong to the official union, and the union would take a bit out of your paycheck to help pay for vacations at spots like this one. Of course, the union was controlled by the Nazi party, and the party skimmed quite a chunk of cash out of the union funds. The vacations were cheap, but were run even cheaper, and doubled as Nazi indoctrination camps. This place should be flattened and the debris dumped into a deep, deep part of the ocean. |
