More red-on-red violence. Tusk, tusk. | Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels on Tuesday fatally shot a former Tamil parliamentary candidate allied to a renegade Tiger leader, police said.
[BANG!]
"Y'got me! Rosebud"! | Kingsley Rasanayagam was gunned down while walking in the government-held town of Batticaloa, 220 kilometers (140 miles) east of Colombo, a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity. A bodyguard of Rasanayagam's was also injured in the attack, the officer said.
Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? | Rasanayagam won in April parliamentary elections after running as a candidate for the mainstream Tamil National Alliance, a proxy party of the Tigers. He subsequently resigned his parliamentary post, largely because of pressure from the Tigers over his allegiance to a top eastern rebel leader who broke away from the rebels' main faction in March. Scores have since been killed in factional fighting that has threatened to derail a fragile cease-fire agreement between government forces and the Tigers. |
