Habib torture claims heard by US court
2004-12-02
A US court has been told of claims by Australian terror suspect Mamdouh Habib that evidence about his involvement in terrorism came from statements he was forced to make under torture in US and Egyptian custody. Habib's lawyer, Joe Margulies, revealed the statements, made to a US military panel, during a Washington court hearing into the rights of more than 500 Guantanamo Bay detainees who are attempting to gain access to the US legal system, The Sydney Morning Herald said. Mr Margulies said Habib told the panel the statements he gave were false and "given only because he was tortured".The lawyer said he intended to press the allegations of torture very vigorously, the SMH reported. Habib has been in US custody for more than three years without being charged.
