Lo-Carb Diet Craze Over: I Call Hijinks
2004-12-19
...A study by NPD Group, an independent marketing information company, found that the percentage of American adults on any low-carb diet in 2004 peaked at 9.1 percent in February and dropped to 4.9 percent by early November. Further, it said only one of four people surveyed was significantly cutting carbs and "virtually none" were reducing carbs as much as the diets recommended. That means many companies that rode the low-carb wave are either out of business or refocusing their strategies...
I think that the Marketing industry has been told to end the lo-carb diet craze by the hi-carb manufacturers of breads, junk food, beer, etc. I noticed that a health food chain had stripped all the lo-carb from their shelves, even though it was still selling well, and four other food chains I called on the same day said they were doing the same. None had noticed any reduction in sales, but all advised me that "the lo-carb diet craze is over."

#14  Say what you want, low fat didnt work (actually put weight on, plus blood chemistry was shot to crap ), its my "Metabolic Syndrome X" and lo-carb wroked and continues to work for me. Lipids, cholesterol, insulin function, etc - all fixed up and no need for medication. Just have to stay away from the carbs - especially sugars and starches. But I can continue to chow down on the fish, chicken, pork and beef. Its like the diet says - this isnt for everyone. And anyone claioming to "debunk" it is full of crap - there are now plenty of studies that support "atkins" style diets. Its just that, like "low fat" and other diets, one size does not fit all.

SO yes, you CAN have those christmas cookies - here take the whole bag.

#12  That's why OS gave away the bag. Being a predator pisces I eat fish, especially salmon. No ecoli burgers for me. Caeser salads with chicken.

#10  Too funny. It's like the MSM, and Hollywood. They believe that they can fight reality with simple slogans like "the lo-carb craze is over". Over in their dreams. Everyone I know, over the age of 25, is at least trying to cut their carbs, because the diet actually works. Unless they are planning on stripping the shelves of dairy, meat and milk products, all that this will do is open new distribution channels for low carb foods on the web and specialty locations.

The sugar lobby is so strong (world wide) it can bribe anyone to prove Atkin's diet is bad for you.

#8  if you haven't drank tap water from the Colorado River, you've never really appreciated bottled water. Minerals your body didn't know it wanted

#7  Market it as the "Eat Air" diet, TGA.

After each reduced-portion sized normal meal, consume five mouthfuls of whole air (preferably chilled) and resist the temptation to burp for ten minutes. Although room air may be satisfactory, for best results and guaranteed weight loss, we recommend certified Compressed Eat Air Air. Look for the logo.

There was money in bottled water, after all.

#4  I have the perfect diet that has worked for me for decades: I eat whatever I want, just not too much of it.

Can I get a book deal?

#1  Oh, yeah, must be a conspiracy.

I conclude that Americans just plain got sick of low-carb diets (or, that everyone who was going to try one already had, and lost the weight he wanted, or failed to). My basis for this insight is that whenever I wanted to buy plain old high-carb bread and tortillas, there were very few on the shelf. Always plenty of low-carb crap, though.

Guess you won't be wanting those Christmas cookies, will you? *grab*
