Dem Congressmen: Conservative Voices On PBS May Be Illegal
2005-05-12
Two congressional Democrats called Wednesday for an investigation into recent activities by the Corporation for Liberal Public Broadcasting, suggesting that efforts by the Republican chairman of the private nonprofit to add any more conservative programs onto PBS may violate federal law.

In a letter released Wednesday evening, Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., and Rep. John D. Dingell, D-Mich., asked CPB Inspector General Kenneth A. Konz to investigate the contracting, hiring and policies of the corporation, which distributes federal funds to public television stations. Both congressmen are ranking Democrats on committees that have oversight of public television. They called recent actions taken by CPB Chairman Kenneth Tomlinson ``disturbing'' and ``extremely troubling.''

A CPB spokesman could not be reached for comment. But in a recent interview with the LOS ANGELES TIMES, Tomlinson defended his efforts to expand conservative perspectives on PBS, saying he merely wants to increase the network's audience.

#16  radio, tv, who cares?

Let the leftists fund their broadcast media - why should I have to do it for them? They've got more money than I do anyway. (And not by leftist means, either, you'll notice.)

#15  Barb, I think it was radio which got the money, Mara on FoxNews roundtable explained it earlier this week.

#14  NPR could survive on it's own. PBS can't. With 200 plus Channels out their PBS wouldn't be missed.
Cut the funding, take the saving pay down on the deficit.

#13  It isn't even "public." It's supported by ads disguised as messages from "sponsors" like Microsoft, Walmart etc

#11  SR - I doubt that. Didn't Mrs. McDonald's endow them with millions a year or so ago? And some other too-rich person just ponied up too, I believe.

Cut off the tax money and let them get their funds from their rich leftist supporters.

AND, as part of the legislation defunding them, deny them the use of the term "Public Broadcasting" on the grounds it would be fraud.

("Leftist Broadcasting" on the other hand....)

#10  I think Michigan has worse problems than choosing to watch a conservative program.

#9  As a frequent in-auto listener, I can assure these Democrats that CPB Chairman Tomlinson has a long way to go before there will be balance, let alone conservative tilt.

#7  Elmo and the other able bodied seamen can more than fend for themselves in the marketplace. Shite like "Now" won't float anyday of the week even if you lash it to a barrel.

#6  Surely you don't want to defund BigBird? (/sarc) CPB would go the way of Air America without their Federal handout. More welfare for rich liberals.

#5  Let the worm-ridden hulk slip under I say. You can't careen this one for repairs because it's too far gone and most of the crew are mad fools or scurvy ridden. Start over if you must, but choose the crew and officers carefully. Read them the articles and hold them too it.

#4  Amen Badnaov! Cut them loose and let sink/swin on their own.

#3  Let's resolve this in a fair fashion.

Defund/dismantle the CPB. Let them survive as a private entity. That way we won't be breaking federal law.

#2  Exactly which Federal is transgressed?

(sidenote: having driven through North-Central Wisconsin during the silly season, it is really funny seeing all these signs commanding his followers to "Obey!" And year after year, they do.)
