Women are raped, murdered and abused with impunity all over Afghanistan despite the overthrow of the Taleban that was supposed to have ushered in a new era of rights for women, Amnesty International said today. The London-based rights group said entrenched feudal customs still meant Afghan men often treated women as chattels who could be abused at will without any fear of official retribution.| Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whoopdy doo. Under the Taliban that kind of treatment was state policy. Now it's a cultural matter. The Islamists and Pashtuns and other primitives will have to compete with the guys who have at least slightly more modern ideas. In the long run — and in the case of Afghanistan it could we be very long — they're going to lose, unless they get another government like the Taliban to reinforce those bad habits. |
